Ah ok. Hfs+ does that allow you to have larger capacity?

I do have my 6200 on 8.6, my 6500 on 9.1 and my g3 imac on 10.3.9 & 9 but it’s 7 i like the most in b&w

It's a better filesystem overall. Faster, less corruption prone and let's you use bigger volumes without getting huge files etc.

HFS+ support would be another reason for people - we're not naming any names - who are currently still on 8.1, to see the light of 7.6.1 ? ;-)

Great job @ Knezzen. Let's get this installer done. Write me on Jabber when you're online, we're having a national holiday here today and the kids will visit friends, so it's just my trusty Macs, some beer & pretzels and me all day :-D

@m68k - Oh, Virex and ATM not getting along? Care to elaborate what the error was and how you came to notice?

Just an FYI: ATM has had a lot of history concerning incompatibility issues with other software and Virex has also has hiccups, including but not limited to Mac OS 8.6.

Such issues are the reason software like Conflict Catcher were so popular back in the day in catching INIT conflicts with the OS or each other, especially at startup, but sometimes just causing havoc or hiccups during normal operation. Of the two, ATM was usually the bigger offender, IIRC :( others who work a lot with ATM will have plenty more to say on this subject.

For me 8.1 is the best OpSys ever devised for a 68k processor. Together with the skinnability of Kaleidoscope it is an OpSys that is - at least in my not so humble opinion - perfectly suited to the creative mindset.

There are older MacOS versions that are better for vintage gaming and more recent ones for Internet geeks and power graphics designers.

But 8.1 strikes the perfect balance between good looks, stable operation and just the kind of functionality needed to make the OS usable for productive purposes even today. And yes, HFS+ is most certainly one of the reasons why I can use my vintage Mac setup for creative business. I can work with Photoshop 4 at almost the same speed as I would with GIMP under Linux, unless I start some CPU heavy calculation job.

QuarkXPress allows me all kind of shenanigans that modern day DTP apps brag about. OK, I had to install tons of add-ons to get it there, but if it works it works.

Adobe Distiller, Illustrator, Transverter - you name it I got it and I can produce top notch print quality documents with all of them. Free of bling bling hassle, constant update reminders and no need to push & pull my stuff up & down from somebody else's cloud.

My HFS+ volumes approach 80GB and soon I'll cross the 100GB threshold with them. The damn thing just runs and runs and runs - and now I got MIDI sound working, too.

What else does an aging Egghead need to be happy? :D

@Bolkonskij + cballero - Not sure what triggered Virex to misbehave (which is why it took me so long to identify this culprit).

Maybe I just added one font set too many, but all of a sudden the ATM control panel would freeze when trying to read its font sets. So I thought that Adobe was at fault and I removed the ATM panel and even tried to replace the old ATM settings folder with a backup version.

But now B-II would not finish the startup process, suddenly terminating after almost everything else had loaded. And that didn't stop until after I had removed my Data volume (where the font sets are located, too) from my B-II setup.

So I made a an empty copy of my 48GB data drive and then moved one directory back after the other, in an attempt to identify the offender. As I was sure it must have been a file or dir with a corrupt resource fork.

No that took me almost a week to accomplish and it lead to *nothing*. For all of a sudden the damn thing wouldn't finish the boot no more - but removing the last two dirs I had just added didn't change that.

That is when I decided to go cut throat and I started with just a bare bones Extensions folder and no Control Panels. Then I added them one by one bny one in again (which took the rest of the week) until finally only Virex was left.

And as soon as I put that one in again - Bang - ATM didn't launch and shortly thereafter the boot sequence ended in system termination.

Somehow something in the data drive makes Virex so furious, that it ends up blocking all file access. Catch is, I take that "Data" in the volume name very serious. There is *no* executable code stored there what-so-ever.

I'll get to the bottom of it later on in life. I'll just scan any new app manually before installing it (which is what I normally do) so on-file-access-scan isn't really needed anyway.

68040
Obviously in your name your on a 68040, are you on a IIFX?

Now i am intrigued, i play around with both dtp and sound. I’m on photoshop 4 but on my se/30 and it runs fine. Rendering is slow mind and 1bit is limited lol

Midi, what DAW software are you using, i’m having difficulty getting my keyboard back into cubase. How have you set yours up? Sorry to change subject

Wow, 68040, that's thorough! :o

But I must agree with you on Mac OS 8.1, certainly, for pre-G3 processors, System 7.6.1, which is the ultimate per the S7T site is faster, but anything faster than stock machines, like any upgradable Mac to a fast '040 (I think even the IIfx had an upgrade?), and possibly the Quadra 840AV, I wouldn't think twice on using 8.1, even If I'd want to skin it to System 7 if that's my preference, no problem!

Again, 8.1 to me was the last System 7 in my book being it was the last OS to run 68k Macs, so it deserves that spot even if it's younger brother, Mac OS 7.6.1, is the speed-demon in the family and also a fan-favorite, especially on slower Macs! ;)

Didn’t get 8 get bloated by having to need both 68k and ppc?

I’m with you though Cballero i still like the 7. Can’t put my finger on why though. Maybe the nostalgia. 68040 though is doing dome heavy lifting with all that dtp and music.

I am running on Basilisk-II (custom built) with a Quadra 800 ROM. My host is a QuadCore ARM tablet with 6GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

So get me right. you’re using an emulation of old macos tweaked to use some of your modern hardware to do modern workflow? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That’s either utter genius or your nuts 😆

I love it :)

I’ve never used the emulation, hear it’s good 👍

Ever tried to do creative work on a "modern" day OS? Under Linux it is a pain in the rear just to get the font size right for screen display. Java, KDE, Gnome, XFCE - they all use separate settings and on most distros there is no common GUI for that. So you get thrown back to command line caveman guerilla tactics.

And under dreaded Windoze you can't run any 2 days straight w/o some "Update, Update, UPDATE!!!" popup getting in your way, Not to mention that almost none of the modern day commercial software vendors allow you to purchase their sheyit any longer. You got to rent it - meaning you pay every month, again and again and again.

On top of that most vendors require you to store your work in *their* cloud - so the very moment you stop paying you'll lose r/w and in some cases even read access to your data,

But most obnoxiously, other than said cloud access, some other Internet Tomfoolery and the never ending update reminders and other notification popups, there is next to nothing really "new" that would be worth all that time, money and trouble.

So if you like 24/7/365 upgrade, update and licensing terror, then I suggest you go with Windoze 11 and try to have fun with it. :D

I for one get more done with MS-Office 4 on MacOS8.1 than with any Microsoft product under Win 10 or 11. And unless Linux finally gets itself a common DPI/Screen font management, doing DTP under it is just asking for pain & agony.

Not to mention the fact that the developers of Libre Office won't stop reminding anyone that their product is "not rife for production use". They really told me that when I informed them that clicking on "Save" doesn't always save a document you're working on. I once lost half a book because of that. Yet their reply was "we know its faulty but did you read the fine print?"

And the folks behind GIMP openly state "hey, its free software so stop complaining if it ain't working!"

Fair enough, cut back to simpler software:)
