I saw a screenshot for NN2 with a picture embedded in the text. But when I tried to copy/paste any image it wouldn't take.

Do you know anything about that?

I do not recall ever trying to paste an image into New Notepad II. WorldText(?) was released with MacOS 9 and it would work with rich text, so perhaps New Notepad II moved to a different text rendering engine. If I remember correctly the last version(s) on New Notepad II ran native on OS X, and I think most all text applications use the OS X built in text engine, which uses rich text.

Forgot to add a link to the developer's page. It is in Japanese, and I used Googe translate to read it. It does speak of holding different types of data. Of course it also makes the point that it is paid software.

I installed SoftWindows 1.0.3 with XGA resolution and Win3.1. Got rid of SoftAT and Soft PC intead. Reenabled Virtual Desktop and supersized my screen real estate (3x1280x800 in both directions).

Now off to the next challenge.

Today, using Mac OS 7.6.1 on Basilisk II (build 142), I converted the TrueType font "Truth" - the default System font used in the Apple development build of System 7.7a2 - to a Macintosh PostScript 1, and TrueType PC copies, using Fontographer v.1.1.4.

I then installed the Truth font on 7.6.1 and printed it to a PostScript .ps file using "The TypeBook 2.0" and then converted the .ps file to PDF using Distiller 3.0 and viewed the result in Acrobat 3.0

It's a nice font, Truth (by The Font Bureau, 1996). I wonder if Apple ever used it elsewhere?

Setting up my remaining MultiMedia apps, the last package before I can call my system "complete".

As strange as that might sound, the games can wait until I got some spare time for that.

Not strange at all; a Mac should do what you want it to do and in the order you want it to, period :)

I'll likely beg you for your final app-only image so I can test out the dream Mac setup (but I know that the more dev-related stuff will all be way over my head) but still.. bragging rights, you know? ;)

And as far as the Truth font, how'd you like it compared to Charcoal? I'm sure it an improvement over the original Chicago. I know I once asked someone to convert a newer San Francisco font I believe (not the ransom note-looking one in the original Classic Macs) but one for system use to try out in my emulated 68k Mac, but it renders all choppy so it appears that that particular conversion failed, or maybe the font is not backward compatible (I'm not a whiz at all things fonts, lol). But perhaps you may have a better shot at a retro conversion of this newer San Fran font! It's been on my wishlist for a good while now :D

Well, my disk images amount to roughly 80GB by now and I plan to increase that still. :D

My preferred fonts are Palatino, Times [New Roman] and Brushscript for writing books and good old boring Geneva for screen display.

@MTT - awesome! I'd also be interested in hearing more about "Truth". Can't recall ever hearing of it?

It's kind of surprising we haven't got a classic Mac related font "fanpage". There's some stuff on the Garden, but given the popularity in DTP (here we go again ...) it's interesting there's no page where you could read more about fonts for Mac OS, download them and read more about the historical relation between typography and the Mac. Or localization e.g. how to use Japanese fonts or Cyrillic ones with your Mac OS.

It'd be kind of unique, given the big font pages moved on long ago. Would be a nice fan page project.

@cballero: The Truth font, I can guess why they decided against using it instead of Chicago or Charcoal as a default System font... It's too nice to be wasted on menu's IMO. ;-)

Perhaps it's more comparable to Arial Black but not as heavy.

Also I'm not quite sure what you mean by "newer San Francisco font". There was a San Francisco facsimile TrueType called StFrancis, created back in 1990. It's a perfect knockoff of the original bitmap Mac San Francisco font. I also made Type-1 copies of this.

Anyway, here's Truth and StFrancis as Type-1 PDF printouts. So you all can judge for yourselves.

@Mike: Sorry! I should have posted a link (but all are for modern browsers)

(modern URL) https://osxdaily.com/2018/11/11/download-san-francisco-font-mac/

It's just a system font for Mac introduced with OS X 10.11 El Capitan that's also used in other Mac OSes like iOS :) I'd like to convert it to a Classic friendly TTF :)

And you're right! The Truth font looks really good!! :D plus I'm a sucker of custom system fonts, lol.

@68040: Whoa! :o 80gb! That's sweet!! And I somehow love the simplicity of TrueType fonts, not to say that I don't enjoy ATM fonts, I just don't enjoy those ATM INIT glitches ;)  Funny enough, I have used the Geneva system font for my OS font, too! It's very clean and simple.. and much easier on the eyes than Chicago, or even Charcoal!

@cbellro: That's a Font !?!  ;)

Huge download. I mounted SF-Pro.dmg and opened the .pkg inside, using Pacifist. I saw (scroll to bottom of list in Pacifist) a single TrueType font, right at the very bottom of the list.

It's huge in MB's for a TT font, but to be expected with fonts that contain every languages character set. Wow the EULA in this thing is humongous.

I extracted said font without installing and copied it over to a System 7.6.1 box and loaded it up in Fontographer 4.1.4 (increasing Fonto's memory partition to accommodate this huge font first). Fonto can easily remove most of the character set, leaving a typical 255 or so characters and export that to a nice TT font for SSW 7 of around 256KB or less if you need to.

Anyway, the TrueType of this font is already in the .pkg and you don't need to run the package installer to get it, download it from the mounted .dmg, using Pacifist to extract it.

Somehow the San Fran copy I received looked completely ruined for system display purposes, so I couldn't get its font look in my Classic's finder..

I wonder if the person who shared it with me had only copied it straight or if they had tried to convert it? I never actually tried printing the font sent to me in Classic, so perhaps printing with it, even to a PDF file to see if the font would look okay? But then again, that wasn't my original intended purpose for it :(

Perhaps your translated copy would look better?

So far... The TrueType SF Pro font extracted from the dmg pkg is a whopping 14.4MB extracted. Phew.

I've since tried opening it with Fontographer in my G3 and G4 (running 9.1 & 9.2.2 OSs respectively). On both PPC Macs, Fontographer crashes with Type 1 errors while attempting to open this font.

Meanwhile today, back in Basilisk II and running Mac OS 7.6.1, there's no problem opening it with Fontographer and converting the SF Pro into something useable in a classic SSW 6.0.5+, or SSW 7.0+ –and on topic for this thread ;)

I've uploaded the font here, it's a 6.8MB download as I've included the extracted original TrueType file too – the converted TT font is located in the folder "True-T", once the archive has expanded.

I've also included a printout (as PDF) so you can view that too if you wish.

The converted font contains just the standard 255 English character set which came to approx. 100kb only, which is fine to use in a US or an Int. English System 7.

[Edit] have replaced those items (links in a more recent post)
