Unfortunately, there was never a 68060 upgrade option for the Macintosh. We went from 68040 to PowerPC 601 directly. But that'd be an interesting hobbyist project ...

Browsing with a 68000 CPU is a lost cause I'd say. Pop in a 68030 accelerator and you might be able to get half-decent speeds browsing.

@MTT: :o you are the Mac 'Gandalf', Mike!!! :D

@68040: yep, there sure was a '68060' chip, but not a true Mac processor upgrade because it lacks some sort of low-end ROM and/or drivers (basically, from what I recall reading, not a easy feat to accomplish without the right Apple programming know-how requiring some serious, roll-up-your-sleeves action) and such to make it viable for the Mac OS :(

@Neil: simply to make significant modifications to a program or play around with a bunch of software stuff ;)

Well, they made one for the Amiga. Yet another cause where the bouncy ball just kept on bouncing.

To be honest, if not for the almost complete lack of serious DTP, Office and professional image processing software (something that doesn't torture your eyes with HAM or flicker mode), I might have stuck it out with UAE. I spend almost a year getting my "perfect Amiga box" running on it - only to find out that my distro (a special AOS port developed for Android devices) was no longer supported.

Add to that the disappointed that there wasn't a single 68k office package able to handle Microsoft or RTF files and all the numerous image processing apps for the Amiga were stuck at 640x400 or the like, with 4096 colors.

Yup, I could expand my Workbench desktop beyond that in UAE, but then all those traditional Amiga programs would go haywire. The Desktop became almost unmanageable and I was never able to find  a way to produce production ready PS/PDF files under 68k Amiga OS.

The Amiga was and still is a great machine for (vintage) gaming and multimedia work for TV end devices. But anything beyond that was never within its reach.

Imagine if Commodore would have made the investment to give the Amiga a proper Mac like OS, fixed that foolish flicker video mode and paid Adobe/Microsoft to port their products to their platform.

Think about how vibrant that OS could still be today, with such a highly dedicated user base. But for all the genius of Jay Miner, they had no Steve Jobs as their CEO. You need a visionary to turn a good product into a lasting legacy.

Cashed, you can get the 68030 online. It was a faff for sure. Web browsers are memory hungry. Explorer 4 on my se/30 wouldn’t open with the original 4mb as it took up 2.5mb, add the os and it was to large.
Steps:-
1.) ram is quite cheap £60-70 i paid for 128mb that was a few years ago.
2.) you need a network card, they’re getting rarer and more expensive although can be found for under £100 still. Finding the driver for my obscure one took months.
3.) you’ll likely need a transceiver £20 as most old 10 base cards are aui type. This converts it to rj45 of today. Make sure the switch on it is set correctly. It took me 6 months to find that 😆
4.) a packet switching switch or hub £10 as modern fibre broadband isn’t packet switching anymore.
5.) an updated tcp/ip protocol then after all that the reality is it’s limited to a small number of sites. Frogfinder is a must.
In truth it’s more of a novelty, that doesn’t stop me using at least weekly for browsing and constantly looking for things it can do online. Fast it is not though. Slow 10 base networking on a machine that stopped production 2-3 years before the internet (www) was even a thing is entertaining and was my dream too. I do have my g3 imac on the desk next to it so anything i cant get to work i download from that, pop it on zip to tranfer.

Summary
I kind of agree 68030 is probably the least to run online. I costs a bit to do. Isn’t all that useful. Do i regret doing it to mine. Not one bit, as a hobbyist finding silly things to use it for is a giggle/blast. Streaming radio, email, creating a website on it are my little and larger projects. So pushing the boundaries is always fun.

Cballero, make a low res radio section to stream from it in code :) i did read someone had done that. Not tried yet manic week at work before going on holiday in the morning.

The Amiga was a great machine for the time. I wouldn’t say no to one for some vintage gaming!

68060 intrigued idea but i fear to difficult to implement. Ppc upgrade card or a slightly clocked 68040 with extra cache. I had read though 68040 can’t be massively over clocked. Several options

I've though of, completely in my head of course :) to have a cool futuristic-looking Mac design for 3-D printing and then using the fastest and smallest Windows CPU (32-bit if I want to use a static IP address) for a an old Basilisk II emulator build, 142, that can do all of low-level stuff like boot off of real floppy disks.. wait, I found one of Mike's quotes, let me paste it right here:

Quote from: MTT
A static IP address if needed <-- 32 bit Windows required
Floppy media support (1.4MB only - a hardware limitation, not B2's)
SCSI HFS HD support (to PCs with an available SCSI card)
Read/Write to SCSI removable media (Zip drives, etc.)
Keyboard remapping that puts the JIT builds to shame ;)
CD-R writability - no DVD support but the build predates DVD adoption

Basically, a 680x0 Mac that is as close as you can get to the real thing under emulation

So this would be a really fast 68k Mac with a bunch of RAM, running a dual boot with Mac OS 7.6.1 and 8,1, loaded with a bunch of huge disks and disk backups, all sorts of real drives, zip drives, orb and jazz drives, optical and floppy drives, just a real 68k beast! :o

So even though it's an emulator at heart, it's core beats true with a Mac heart.. I'd see if a BlueSCSI adapter could spice up the works even more? I'm also trying to remember if real Macs offered extended monitors from a laptop and how that could even look like on an emulated one! lol

The other route would be to find the mobo of one of the fastest 68k Macs and seeing how to do any crazy upgrades, basically the same thing, just with the real thing! :D

Ah yes, Lauri Pesonen's amazingly amazing Basilisk II build 142 :)
A great pity that Lauri will likely never update it to run on newer hardware or other platforms. Still, as long as I have an older PC at hand, I will continue to use it for anything System 7 to 8.1 related.

The above quote in @cballero's post was from a Mac Garden forum topic and we were privileged to have Lauri join in, so if you all haven't read it, it may have some interesting tidbits and further readings to journey on to.

I see down in that MG topic (WA) links to the Build 142 source code as well.

Maybe one day, some gifted soul will take up the challenge ;)

Here's a list of Mac's, that B2 build 142 can pretend to be:
  • Mac IIci
  • Mac IIfx
  • Mac IIvi
  • Mac IIvx
  • Mac Centris 610
  • Mac Centris 650
  • Mac Color Classic
  • Mac Color Classic II, Performa 275
  • Mac LC II
  • Mac LC III
  • Mac LCIII+, Performa 460-467
  • Mac LC/Performa 475-476/20
  • Mac LC/Performa 475-476/33
  • Mac LC 520
  • Mac LC/Performa 550,560
  • Mac Performa 600
  • Mac LC/Performa 575-578/20
  • Mac LC/Performa 575-578/25
  • Mac Quadra 605/20
  • Mac Quadra 605/33
  • Mac Quadra 610
  • Mac Quadra 650
  • Mac Quadra 700
  • Mac Quadra 800
  • Mac Quadra 900
  • Mac Quadra 950

Though I usually settle for the Quadra 800 (its ROM is good like the Q650). I also run the '030 IIfx with this B2 - For this one I use the ROM from a PowerBook 180c - It has the most awesome startup bong sound ;)

I fiddled around with most ROMs and found the Quadra 800 to be the most stable.

My motto: If it ain't broke don't fix it. :)

Btw, I can make MIDI music now. :D

@68040: I'm gonna call 'ya Fiddler on the Mac, lol ;) wait, what? :o you're a MIDI-composing fool now, too?? :)

@MTT: so, what kind of programmer can continue updating the 142 build? If we can find someone keen on Classic Mac OSes that has the right Windows  programming skill set, then what I envisioned would be achievable on modern PCs!! :D

Now to find the right chap or lass for the task! :)

Today (well, and yesterday) I made my Mac talk and it says such nice things to me now. :)

Did some BBsing on System 7, wrote a letter with WriteNow and printed it. Afterwards tested some user-made mods for System 7 compatible games.

Now just sat down and opened up a bottle of beer which I'll have along with a handful of pretzels. Properly embracing the weekend! :-D
