It went astray with my old keyboard. Seems it didn't like my new BT "human interface device" with UK layout. Its a rather pricy design and the '~' stayed where it belonged under Debian, but vanished in MacOS and was instead replaced with the § sign. Given that I run my MacOS with US English that's rather befuddling, but I hate spending too much time hunting down single characters.

Anyway, now I got it back Jack and it won't escape again. :D

Quote from: Bolkonskij
I recall two browsers for System 6, and you know at least one of them :-)

The candidate in question is MacWWW from 1992 which is *very* bare-bones. I'm not sure if it'll be able to render even any page, but I haven't tried it. I may fire up the IIci now to find out.

The second one is "Browser 6" [...]

Thanks for those links. Unfortunately for me, I don't have a SSW6 Mac capable of network use, to test, let alone WWW.

It looks as though you may have briefly tried MacWWW, going by your comment left on that page.

It doesn't look like a promising option for accessing S7T ;)

As flaky as browser6 is, it may have more luck accessing S7T using SSW6. I believe those two (green colored) screenshots on the browser6 page are mine. They show what it looked like while attempting to access the MG - before it crashed. ;)

All up there really isn't anything seriously on offer for SSW6

I had hoped MacWeb could have helped out here, but it's 7.0 and above. MacWeb was the first browser I ever successfuly used - On a Mac SE, too. :)

Actually, I only later realized that I had it tried out before. For whatever reason, it mixed with NCSA Mosaic in my memories.

Given System 7 Today utilizes color images for the graphics, those browsers are likely to have a hard time accessing anything that isn't a pure HTML page with text. And hey, back we are with Gopher, which is basically the same thing, though much more elegantly incorporated :-)

It's interesting nobody ever supplied System 6 with even a bare-bones web browser. But then System 6 was well into pension at the time the whole WWW thing really took off during the mid 90s.

Add in to the fact that no Open Transport runs on System 6 and you're stuck with MacTCP. Coding with/for MacTCP is no fun, I'm sure.

Funny you should mention that one Bolkonskij.
As I was testing brower6 and MacWWW out on Executor -MacWWW is a no go as it requires MacTCP and since Executor does not have a real System folder, there's no folder for Control Panels either.

Interesting result using browser6
And NCSA Mosaic
Version 1.0.3 was for system 7.0.0, so trying to locate an earlier version. Who knows maybe the initial or beta was for System 6.0.8.
-can't wait to test them on real hardware.

Found the source code

Here's a fun one - try hit return

@68040 not quite -but it sure does count :D
A very important one '~' used when excavating old user sites ;)

PS -the NCSA screenshot is only showing a local.html ;)

Going to install a DAW on my 8600. Can't decide if I'd go with Cubase or Logic thogh. Pre 8 versions of Logic are quite horrible. Might go with Cubase :P

Good choise! ;) - I don't fancy the earlier Logic versions either, got an XS USB key (found in a thrift  shop sticking out of the back on a G5)

ps don't go looking for an earlier version of NCSA Mosaic -there are none

This research is just for preparations -but sure I'll test it, when I get the hardware. To be honest, I really don't care that much about the browser options for my SE.

I merely got my SE/20 so I could run some of the really ancient software that the emulation guys can't.
I'll have all the Systems installed on mine, from SWW 1.1 to 6.0.8 (Even maybe 7+.) My model supports 3.3 - 7.5.5. But there has been one report of one user running System 1.1 on the SE (lowendmac site)
Then I'll use @adespoton's trick to swap OS versions for any OS between 0.9.8 and 6.0.8 without having to reboot at all. There's also 5-6-7 INIT

Hey guys. Knezzen i put on cubase light on my se/30 but i think that my options were limited on b&w macs. You can vst on later versions.
It took a while to get mine configured through midimac and a roland sound canvas. I’ve not got to grips with how cubase/daw works yet, maybe you can help. I have a few other midi programs and know it all works as my midi keyboard 🎹 works fine and a midi player works through the roland too. Just need the time to tinker and watch some YouTube videos I suppose. I haven’t worked out getting the sounds for each channel into the daw. Let alone drum kits.

Neal: I went with Cubase VST/24 4.1 on my 8600 in 7.6.1 and it works like a charm. Need to load up the system with some VSTi's now ;)

That version looks awesome. I don’t think they’ve improved much since then so it’s as good as you can get. I bet the 8600 flys on 7.6.1. What are you connect it through, sound card or sound module or both. I noticed you had a bunch of stuff on your ST midi.

I need a good clear day to have a play as i’m new to DAW. Something i’ve always wanted to try and make some dance music.

Just an M-Audio MIDI keyboard and some VSTi's in Cubase. I have all my external MIDI gear in the studio and the 8600 is at home. It's more about tinkering and trying out new ideas than actually doing a whole production. At least on this machine.

Aren't you supposed to be on vacation, Neal? Wife keeping you busy? :-)

Playing with various Quicktime versions, especially 4 and 5. Also trying to find ways to use Quicktime Pro to easily add subtitles to Quicktime movies.
