1 Operating System / Weird Stuff

If anyone's still in the market for SCSI HDDs, I've found this site a while ago... they have a whole pile of SCSI hard drives for sale, a bunch of them even Apple branded:
http://www.weirdstuff.com/cgi-bin/category/10017

But I haven't bought any from them yet... $50 is a bit more than I want to pay. If you get any from them, please let me know how it goes.
2 Classifieds / Wanted - Working or Dead PB1400 Battery

Sorry, all I can find are the two I use in the PB. Keep an eye on Ebay though... 1400s appear on there pretty often, and even if it's broken, if all you need is the battery, and not even a working one...

I remember for my 1400s, I pried open a few batteries, took the guts out, and used the battery as a storage drawer for headphones or a Sonnet screwdriver.

I wonder if I have any spares.... I'll have to dig them up and get back to you.
4 Operating System / Mac Classic - Writing System 7 Floppys

on a related note, I wonder what error -123 is... that's what Disk Utility is throwing at me when I try to restore... even after converting the image to an uncompressed DMG.

Sounds like something that would come out of John Hodgeman's mouth in the I'm a Mac commercials, Apple, here's glaring at you.

A quick search reveals: wrgVolTypErr (-123): Wrong volume type error

Ah.

Carbon Copy Cloner is affected by the same problem. This could be serious.

Ok, maybe I believe you now... not only is Disk Utility throwing strange errors when I attempt to restore a disk image (the Disk Tools 1 floppy image from this site) (though it will let me go through all the motions, it just gets upset when I actually try to do it), but dd keeps getting "Operation not supported" when it tries to dump raw data to the drive.

however, what I'm trying to do was apparently done successfully by this blogger: http://the-penciler.blogspot.com/2009/10/of-floppy-disks-hfs-and-snow-leopard.html

However, if your Mac is as finicky as mine and refuses, a PC can be used to make a Mac floppy image. It shouldn't matter what the file system of the image is or if the computer knows how to read it. It only matters that the computer can dump the raw data to the disk, which is what dd does.

If you have a Windows machine, I'm not sure how to go about restoring floppy images, but I'm sure it can be done. If you have a linux based machine, then you can use dd on there as well.

Ah, hmm, but the floppy images may be compressed. Your Mac should still be able to make images of HFS volumes though, so if that's the case, mount the image and use Disk Utility to make an uncompressed copy... then dd should be able to dump the raw image onto a floppy and all should be well.

I highly doubt that, restoring an image to a disk shouldn't be affected by the contents of the image.

but if Disk Utility won't work for you, you can always use dd, the command line disk copy utility.

I'll post instructions once I can dig out my floppy drive.
7 Operating System / Mac Plus Floppies
October 31, 2009, 22:27
Of course the main thing to remember is that the Mac Plus floppy drive takes 800k floppies.

If you need system floppies, Operator Headgap sells 6.08 on 800k floppies for under $13 including shipping.

http://stn2.headgap.com/resale/FMPro?-token=13508739&-db=ProductsC.fp3&-lay=WEB&-format=items.htm&-sortfield=SortID&-Max=40&category=software&-find

as for empty floppies, once you've got the system floppies, you can buy 1.44 MB floppies from an office supply store for cheap, pop in the Disk Tools floppy, and use the Plus to format the 1.44MB HD disks as 800k two-sided DD disks. That's not an ideal solution, but it'll work. There is a chance that the HD disks will slowly reject their DD formatting, so back up often.

If you don't like the idea of having that happen, you could look for 800k floppies on Ebay or on vintage computing sites, or order two copies of each disk from Operator Headgap and use the second set as data disks.

You should be able to use the install disks to install a minimal Plus system onto an 800k floppy with plenty of room left over for TeachText and a printer driver. I think I even managed to smush Appletalk extensions onto one to do Appleshare and print to a networked ImageWriter II.
8 Software / Word 5.1a and 7.6.1
October 14, 2009, 01:45
Don't forget, the System limits the amount of RAM each program is allowed. You can change the amount Word is allowed to use by using Get Info on the app.

That said, I don't remember if I've actually tried Word 5 on 7.6.1... I stick with ClarisWorks 4.
9 Hardware / Color Classic startup problem
October 14, 2009, 01:40
A couple of my old SCSI-drive Macs have a problem where the SCSI drive just takes a while before it'll work properly. Have you tried leaving it at the question mark screen for an hour or so and then rebooting it?
10 Hardware / Connecting to Leopard
September 21, 2009, 06:17
My PB 1400 has the same trouble. My PB 3400 doesn't. It may be 1400-specific.

Let me check and see if the problem goes away when I switch to Mac OS 8.6 on the 1400.
11 Operating System / Snow Leopard sharing to Classic Mac OS
September 08, 2009, 10:26
There's probably some way to fenangle it, like there was a way to get System 7 to talk to Leopard with some prodding.

Although I'm already used to using my iBook running Panther as a bridge between 7.61 and 10.5, so I guess I'll just keep doing that.
12 Software / Orinoco Gold PC card on Powerbook 1400

When I installed WaveLAN on my PB 5300 not too long ago, the installer defaulted to the 68k version. I dug into the custom options and found out why: The PPC version of the drivers apparently doesn't work on the 5300 and the 1400.

You'd think I would've noticed this after installing WaveLAN on two 1400s, but I guess I never payed attention.

So make sure you have the 68k drivers installed.
13 Software / hardware needed? SoundJam, ripping vinyl
August 06, 2009, 13:26
Soundjam's offspring, iTunes, should be able to convert from M4A to MP3 no problem. If you're looking for a 7.6.1-only conversion solution though, that'll be hard.
14 Operating System / Chooser

So yeah, finally tried it. My PB3400 didn't have problems at all, so I guess it's just my 1400.

It crashes for me at the same point on my PB 1400 using 7.6.1 as well.

Odd that all of us having this problem of not being able to connect to 10.5 over Appletalk are using PowerBooks. Are we all trying to do this wirelessly?
Maybe that's the culprit.

I'll try this on my PB 3400 over Ethernet later today and see if it has the same problem.

Although, my PB 1400 seems to just have problems with programs now and then under 7.6.1... Stuffit crashes on some archives (works fine under 8.6 on the other partition) and Camera Access for my QuickTake 200 crashes when trying to view an image under 7.6.1, also working fine under 8.6.

Maybe I need to just up and reinstall 7.6.1 on there.
