Hi All, I have a full version of SoundJam and I have ripped my CD's to MP3. I notice it also has an option to rip from source such as LP or tape. I can do this through either a Beige G3 or a souped up nubus based 7100. Do I need a separate audio capture card or will either of these machines take a direct input through a microphone jack (ie is the mic stereo?) I looked around at specs but nothing caught my eye. I just figured plugging into the mic would be too easy so I am asking. Also - was not sure to post in hardware/peripherals or 3rd party software. sorry if not in the right place. TIA Dave |

The mic input is stereo. And it needs a line level input. If your phonograph has a ceramic cartridge you can plug it in direct or through whatever adaptor cables needed. If your phonograph has a magnetic cartridge you will need to have a pre-amplifier between the phono and the Mac. My stereo system has a tape in/out ports, and I have always connected my Macs to it as if I were connecting a tape deck. My state of the art stereo system dates from about 1974. It has been connected to a Mac beginning with a IIfx right up to my current g4 iMac. I have been using Amadeus sound software for converting tape and vinyl to MP3 for probably a decade and I used MacroMedia's SoundEdit prior to that. They works very well, although there are a large variety of software options available for all the Mac OSes. That includes a number of utilities that were included free with Toast and SoundJam to mention a few. bill

Hi Wove, Your Stereo components are about the same age as mine. Sadly both my Technics and Sansui amps died some time ago. So now I have a"Value Village" quest for an amp. Then I will be able to get my LP's and tapes into a form where I will use them again. Looks like about a $9.00 investment. :-)

I ran into some .m4a files (MP4). SoundJam won't recognize them. Is there a conversion utility for this?

Soundjam's offspring, iTunes, should be able to convert from M4A to MP3 no problem. If you're looking for a 7.6.1-only conversion solution though, that'll be hard.

Yup. Apparently, per my much yonger friend, the way to convert them is to burn them to a CD, open it up in iTunes and rip again as an mp3. I asked if just putting them on a disk image would do it. He wasn't sure. I have the hardware for that so I'll try it. On the amplifier front .... Woot ... Good Will...Realistic Stereo Receiver...120 watts per channel...line in, line out and phono.....$9.95 Played vinyl for the first timein about 8 years. So I will be able to get my LP's to digital. :-)

Hmm - I took a CD and put it on my G4 PB and "Moved it to the iTunes Library". It automatically changed format from AIF to m4a - No options to select mp3. I could not find any other way to rip songs. Anyone know a way on either Classic or OS X to take M4A to MP3? I really do want to put these songs on the PB 1400 and use SoundJam.

iTunes keeps moving the preferences around, but even the latest you can set the import option to MP3. I am still using iTune 4 with OS X and the import options have their own tab in the preferences. I think it is in a more obscure location in the later versions. I continue to work only with MP3 for compatibility with older software. Nice score on the stereo system. Good luck with the vinyl importing. bill

I never saw anything that said "Import" only move to library. And I never saw anywhere to change a preference. Of course, that isjusts proof positive that I am an all things digital music newbie :-D Quote from: "wove"
My understanding is that the format I am seeing is proprietary to the Apple store. I would rather have (a) something playable on older machines and (b) something universally recognized. I'm really happy with the score. I am trying to figiure out how to clean my records. Can't just drop into the old Vinyl store an dpick up suppies anymore. I am looking into Swiffer dusters and microcloths. Will try anything on a record that is "Expendable" first.

In looking at iTunes 8 the import options is a button on the General Page of the preferences. Also in iTune you can control click (right click) on a song in the library and get an option to "Create MP3 Version." bill

iTunes 7 First you have to go to preferences -> advanced -> import options Then Right Click in Library will allow conversion to MP3 Thanks Wove

Resurrecting this old thread as I'm facing the same problem as Lichen. Got a handful of m4a files that I'd like to listen to on my 8600 in Mac OS 7.6.1. Since that discussion is from 13 years ago - any new insights on the topic of converting .m4a files to .mp3 on Mac OS?

Something like Logic Audio Platinum 4.8 should be able to do it, put it's not really a "ripping" or "converting" tool for the common man since it's a digital audio workstation type of software. Just comes to mind.

Being that my 'main' computer is a Chromebook, I end-up searching for and using random online converters ![]() I'd imagine a few of them would most likely work on your Mac OS X Mac and then you could then transfer those converted MP3s to your 8600? Other than that, I'm not aware of any Classic Mac OS utilities that could handle M4A file playback or conversion (although that pro tool Knezzen mentioned does sound like some pretty neat overkill to play with!) ![]() For example, I downloaded a sample 11MB M4A file and uploaded it to https://m4amp3.com/ <- (link requires modern browser) and in about a minute I got a MP3 download link and the resulting MP3 played beautifully (of course, it doesn't do the conversion on a Classic Mac, but it may be a way to get it done on your OS X machine)

ITunes is gone after 2 couple decades. But if you are still using iTunes on OSX, you can go into preferences and set the preferred format at mp3, which directly impost mp3 files without changing them. So until the end of iTunes you can stick with working with mp3. If you do have m4a files, I assume you could use HandBrake to convert them to mp3. You could also probably play them in iTunes and capture the sound with Audacity and save it back as mp3. Not exactly lossless though is it.
