So I followed the instructions to hook my powerbook 1400 up to my OS X machine. I get logged in just fine but when i select the volume to mount chooser crashes. Getting an error of type 1 and it tells me to reboot.

I am sure this is of no help, but I get the same behavior and I have found no way to get around it. It is not file sharing, but for moving files back and fourth you can enable ftp on the Mac OS X machine and use an ftp client on the 1400 to upload and download items.

I am able to log into my Mac OS X machines, mount disks, and copy files to my PB1400 with no problems.  The PB1400 has System 7.6.1,  with all the setup recommendations from this site _except_ it has Open Transport 1.1.2 instead of the later version recommended here (for Location Manager compatibility).  I am logging onto either a Cube or a Pismo, each running 10.4.11.

In Chooser, I select Appleshare, and then enter the IP address of the machine that I want to access.

I have no idea, could it be the wireless card? it connects to my Digital Audio just fine. Just wont mount any volume on my macbook. DA is running 10.4.11 and mb is on 10.5.6.

I should have said in my earlier post that I had the same behavior when trying to connect to a Mac running 10.5.6. We have a bit older machine running 10.4.11 and I am able to connect to it without any issues.

I am guessing that something changed (again) in Mac OS X 10.5 and that is where the connection problems reside. I have not tried connecting using Shareway IP, which is what OS 9 uses to connect to OS X machines. Shareway IP is available for earlier Mac Systems and it inclusion in the networking mix, might make a connection possible.

I am not running 10.5 so I cannot check this out.

Go into your networking and see if you can enable Appletalk in 10.5.  You can in 10.4.

Then, if your router suports appletalk (netgear does), try chooser again.  I do not have to type in any IP's. They just show up on chooser like a classic mac.

I managed to set up ethernet between my PowerBook 540C with OS 8.0 and my Macbook Pro with OS 10.5.6. I would enable file sharing on the MBP, enable AppleTalk on the PB, select AppleTalk in the Chooser, and typed in the address of my MBP (it gives it to you in System Preferences.)

After I updated the PB to OS 8.1, though the Chooser would crash with a type 1 error every time I tried to connect...

I had my PB 1400 set up with a partitioned drive with 7.6, 8.1, 8.6 and 9.0 on the various partitions.

I never could get 8.1 to be stable on the PB 1400.  I have it on two desktop machines and it seems stable.

Go back to 7.6., higher speed or go up to 8.6, more modern appearance and the ability to run some newer versions of software such as ORiNOCO instead of WaveLan

It crashes for me at the same point on my PB 1400 using 7.6.1 as well.

Odd that all of us having this problem of not being able to connect to 10.5 over Appletalk are using PowerBooks. Are we all trying to do this wirelessly?
Maybe that's the culprit.

I'll try this on my PB 3400 over Ethernet later today and see if it has the same problem.

Although, my PB 1400 seems to just have problems with programs now and then under 7.6.1... Stuffit crashes on some archives (works fine under 8.6 on the other partition) and Camera Access for my QuickTake 200 crashes when trying to view an image under 7.6.1, also working fine under 8.6.

Maybe I need to just up and reinstall 7.6.1 on there.

So yeah, finally tried it. My PB3400 didn't have problems at all, so I guess it's just my 1400.
