1 Feedback & Ideas / Legislating Behavior
September 26, 2007, 06:28
My 2 cents, though it may be worth less than that … is that legislating behavior never works. If 16 year old girls want to have sex, they are gonna, you can make it illegal but that is unlikely to change anything in the desired direction. Convincing the populous of 16 year old girls that it is a bad idea to put out is dramatically more daunting of a task but at its worst it is going to be at least as effective as any law.

My point? The relevance?

Creating an atmosphere where people don't misuse editing, no matter how abstract the required action to accomplish such, will be dramatically more effective than outlining rules and policies.

Just a historical observation of the world.

Bill is correct that what you described is normal under Mac OS X, users can see their own home folder and admin users can see complete volumes. This behavior can be changed via NetInfo Manager but is completely unsupported as editing raw directory data in NetInfo can cause your Mac OS X system to become unbootable.

I do not know what to change off the top of my head but a post on the Apple discussion boards would certainly find the answer. It may be posted on http://www.macosxhints.com as well should you care to look.

I am a bit of a purist but I would remind you that 1) there is a good philosophical reason that only admin users can see whole volumes 2) if you want all users to be able to see all volumes, why not make them all admin users?

May be we could delete the dialog box with res edit.

Such dialog boxes are good things. Nine months from now when random guy downloads the application and installs it under Mac OS 7.6.1 and gets no such dialog box but does get strange behavior that none of us encountered because luck is a strange mistress, that person will have no idea why.

Unless we leave the application alone that is.

Oh and if you were asking what the history of the Mac wove is using right now … give him about three months and there will be a different Mac with a different history. :p

I would absolutely love to see his reaction to all this. But he is certainly deserving of the compliments.

Though I'd tease him that he gets a little foggy in the post-1997 era stuff in some areas

6 Operating System / Interesting factoid. Mac OS 8 is really Mac OS 7.7!!!
April 23, 2007, 21:13
Yes.

There are some unified system components that still bear the 7.7 version number within Mac OS 8 "Tempo". Mac OS 8 was originally going to be Copland - a ground up rewrite of the Macintosh Operating System, when Copland was cancelled - publicly it was only announced it would be "shipped piece meal as part of several OS upgrades beginning with Mac OS 8.0" - the Mac OS 8 name was given to the Mac OS 7.7 update program which had been named "Tempo."

Mac OS 9.x also has unified system components labeled as being v.8.7 as a similar renaming occurred when the Rhapsody project was renamed Mac OS X.

Size of the resulting QuickTime compatible MOV file if one were to attempt to convert a DVD VIDEO_TS folder's contents to one would depend entirely on the level of compression, codecs employed, and resolution desired.

One can compress any video to an absolutely tiny file, and considering the resolution of a PowerBook 1400 Series is what … 800x600? Even a fairly low resolution video will look pretty good.

That said, one could not use say MPEG4 or H.264 because the requisite versions of QuickTime Player would be to new for any version of Classic Mac OS.

No version of QuickTime Player will play DVD video. Apple's DVD Player application will play both DVD video discs and VIDEO_TS folders extracted from DVD discs.

Apple's DVD Player I do not believe has any version available for System 7. Pretty sure it only ran under Mac OS 8.5.x, 8.6, and 9.x.

I actually found a copy through a friend so the collective unconsciousness can cancel my request.

But to answer the new related question at hand:

Game play had you controlling a squad of 1-4 bionic-ally (sp?) enhanced spy-type-blade runner wanna be.

It was quite cool. Top down view, units could be upgraded with various bionic implants and weapons.

10 Off Topic Discussion / Apple and Standards
April 16, 2007, 16:24
I'd agree wholly.

DB-15 was actually used by Apple before the VGA and SVGA standards were being widely used on well … anything.

Apple has used some fairly proprietary hardware – the main logic board chipsets have always been proprietary in large degree, but that doesn't really matter to most people. ADC (Apple Display Connector) was Apple's third proprietary display port. The other two were the video out connector used on PowerBooks (HDI-15) and the combination video, audio, ADB through a single port, sorta like ADC (HDI-45). AirPort and AirPort Extreme cards in their various incarnations would also qualify as being proprietary hardware as would the MagSafe adapter.

Technically most of these are "published" specifications but the term proprietary in a moderate sense doesn't mean "stuff that isn't published spec" but "stuff that may be published spec but we have to pay a license to use." In the strict sense proprietary has become known as anything that isn't widely used which is rather sad because it is misleading.

Regardless, you had a very good take on it.

How odd that you would draw that conclusion as well. I did not say this site should post to warez.

What I criticized was your decision to classify it as illegal.

The site clearly states that it only posts abondonware and that it will remove anything at request of the publisher. Not exactly your typical warez site since those do whatever is necessary to continue to make pirated software available.

Course, I could be wrong and they could be lying … but then they'd probably post software more people cared about than just we old System 7 users.

No offense but perhaps you guys should have just not acted childish and perhaps Dan should have well … not acted like forum members are all alike.

Regardless, it is not terribly broken or anything and the world will certainly not end. One just has to make sure to hit preview before actually submitting.

From said "illegal" website:

"Abandonware is commercial software that has been discontinued by the publisher and are not sold or supported anymore. If you are the publisher of a certain game on this site, and wish that it is removed, please email me and I will remove the game."

Right on their front page, yeah, appears they are really dirty people who are unwilling to respect the wishes of software publishers, better keep em away from this site :rass:

There was a very fun game I played back in 1995-1996 called Syndicate. It was available for System 7 and ran well under Mac OS 8 as well, also available for Windows as a historical note as well as several other platforms.

Anyone have a copy of Syndicate for Macintosh laying about? If so drop me a line.

Thanks!
