Software / Re: New: Mac OSX style Dock coming to System 7
September 14, 2023, 14:38 |
DragThing does look pretty nice for the high end. I've used a-dock before on my TiBook but I honestly quite dislike it. It's made pretty difficult to modify. Will have to load DT onto my 3400 and try it out! For this - seems like a definite nice to have program for the lower end stuff. Very nice! |

Off Topic Discussion / Most obscured device you can post here on?
September 06, 2023, 22:53 |
The forum's made for old macs, obviously, but a big part of the benefit of this compatible design is that you can connect to it from just about anything, old mac or not. What's the most obscure device you can think of to use to post here? To start: This thread was posted from a first generation iPhone running the original 1.0 firmware! |

Operating System / Re: Name of your Mac / Macintosh HD?
August 24, 2023, 05:18 |
I used to do: [Product Series] HD/SSD (boring, I know). Examples would be: PowerBook HD, MacBook Pro SSD, iMac HD, etc. I'm still just as boring, but not I name when after the direct model of the computer. "PowerBook 100", "Power Mac 7100", etc. |

I'm pretty sure that someone on 68kMLA got HFS Extended working on 7.6, would have been a year or two ago. Edit: https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/backporting-hfs-to-mac-os-8-0-and-earlier.35742/ |

Cool, I'll throw that program up on my PowerBook 170 when I get back from vacation and try it out. |

I'd take part in that if only I knew how to write hypercard programs. Where does one go to learn how? |

I just didn't have QuickTime properly set up (I think). It's supposed to stream playback, right? Alongside the download options? Not entirely sure as I haven't used it before except for on my G3 a while back when I did download a video. I actually brought my 3400c into the Apple store yesterday. I had to go for a different reason and I figured I'd bring it along, since I do have working batteries for it. A lot of the workers there got a kick out of it! One of them did mention though that they saw a couple of them around a year ago... ...because someone brought them to be recycled

I've sort of failed too... got sidetracked on other projects. I think I'm going to get back into it in a day or two though. I'd like to try out some new games I've yet to get into. I'd also really like to get cornica working. |

My goal for this challenge is to use System 7 for as much as I can, to try and rely on modern systems for only what I can't possibly make work on these Macs. Here's what I've done so far. Day 1 (Yesterday): Didn't do much yesterday as I had done a lot of setting up for this challenge in the days before. Mostly just had my 3400c/240 next to me doing music playback duties, and used it to post here. Also tried to set up BBEdit to try some html editing for my website, but it screws with formatting when I try to transfer back to Windows. Day 2 (Today): I've done a lot more today. - Music on my 3400c/240 - Tried out bigmessowires updated version of Tetris Max on my 3400. It's pretty good! - Updated the System 7 partition on my 1400c/166 from 7.5.3 to 7.6.1 - Set up floodgap.com's custom Etherlink III driver for NuBus PowerBooks in order to get my 1400c/166 online. - Got iCab and other software moved over to the 1400 Later I think I'll do some HTML coding on the 1400. I can't work on my actual website (macdat.net) on it unfortunately as transferring the files to and forth Classic Mac OS and Windows causes a lot of formatting issues from the looks. I'll keep looking to see if I can get that to work. Instead I think I'll just have some fun working on a smaller little project, maybe a small site dedicated to the 1400c or something. Whatever I make, I'll try to get it up on macdat after the challenge as a sub-section. Having a lot of fun so far! And plenty of system lockups, as is par for the course with this stuff... ------------ Sent from my PowerBook 1400c/166 via iCab 2.99 on Mac OS 7.6.1 |

Operating System / Re: Anyone interested in a System 7 / 68k summer challenge?
August 06, 2023, 01:16 |
Well it looks like I won't be able to do website development on my PowerBooks which is a shame. Did a test to see what BBEdit would do with the formatting and it looks like it doesn't work interchangeably with PCs and .html and such. The file BBEdit saved came out as !TESTHTM.L, when I had saved it as "test html" on the mac. As well as such, I'll bet if I move my website's files over to the Mac, it will see them all as "PC" files. If anyone's got an idea on how to get around this, I'd love to hear it. I guess I technically could get it to work this way, but it would mean spending hours fixing the file formatting after I'm done with the whole thing. |

Wow! I'm really shocked that last message went through. I clicked post and iCab threw a type 11 and I had to restart. We'll see if it happens again this time haha Edit: it did... |

I got a good amount of stuff ready on my 3400c yesterday, mainly file transfer. Still setting up though, the 1400 needs to be updated from 7.5.3 to 7.6.1 and I don't have BBEdit installed on either yet. Also got to get the files for my website on there. So far so good though ![]() Anyone else going to join in? --------------------------------------- Sent via iCab from my 3400c. |

well, I cheated and used a newer version of iCab that requires OS 8.5 or newer. I apologize for my sins. Anyways though, that actually did somewhat work. The interface for browservice loads now but I can't actually type anything into the URL bar for it. I'll keep experimenting. |
