I've got too much stuff going (other forums too) that relies on modern web to completely switch for the 10 days, youtube really isn't the biggest issue, but I'm definitely going to participate in some regard. Got the 1400c/166 finally up and running today and I'm fixing to put it to use.

Doing a video is a good idea though, I'll definitely consider that! I'm going to be brainstorming ideas over the next couple of days to come up with just how much I can get done on system 7 alone. First being to see whether my website can render in iCab properly. Could use Classilla but OS 8 is banned ;^)

If I can render my site properly on System 7 (which I honestly think I probably could) then things get more interesting. Trying to do web development on it would be a fun thing to work through I think.

Anyone know a good text/HTML editor that works on System 7? Is having a tabbed  text editor sort of like Sublime Text a pipe dream? Probably could use some old version of GoLive, if it wouldn't add a bunch of extra fluff to my pages like FrontPage likes to do that is.

BBEdit 5 is probably the best thing out there for System 7. Not tabbed, but mosly what you're looking for in other terms.

I was going to recommend the same. BBEdit is awesome, offers plug-in support (though many are hard to find these days) and built like 50% of all WWW pages back in its heyday :D

I still love it. Fond memories and it gets the job done but of course it's not Visual Studio Code ;-)

Anyway, Knezzen and me talked and we've set the day for a 7 day challenge

Start: Saturday, 5th of August
End: Saturday, 12th of August

We invite whoever wants to join us. We'll open up a thread for diaries and discussion upon the start :-)

Can't wait! Will definitely partially participate (don't think i have the guts to go all the way though...)

You can add me to the list, will be doing web dev stuff, music, and as much other work as possible on system 7. If I can, I'd even like to try to get a browser proxy running in order to see how much of the modern web I can browse on System 7. Have been meaning to try that out for a while now and this seems like the perfect chance!

Welcome to the challenge, 3lectr1c! *serious look*

Great to have you join :-) ... maybe we can get a few more die-hards to join us too.

What machine(s) will you be using? Or emulating?

Main two will be these:

PowerBook 3400c/240
Use for: Raw speed, internet, audio playback
PowerPC 603ev @240MHz
48MB RAM
64GB SD Card in place of the factory HDD
Built in Ethernet
Video-Out

PowerBook 1400c/166
Use for: Typing, web dev
PowerPC 603ev @166MHz
64MB RAM
16GB CF Card in place of the factory HDD
Compatible Ethernet PCMCIA card
Video-Out

Might dabble a bit as well with the 540c perhaps, though it's a bit slow for what I'm going to need it too. Or my Power Macintosh 7100/66. The PowerBooks are the main two though.

Alright so, I've had some time to experiment around with different web rendering proxies and browsers, and the results are a bit unfortunate. The best one out there seems to be Browservice, and testing it with a newer OS X system shows it would allow me to do just about anything on the modern web, including logging into modern forums, which would greatly expand what I would be able to do during the challenge. Unfortunately though, while it says it works fine under IE 5 and other browsers that are system 7 compatible, it just refuses to work on the Mac versions, only Windows seemingly. Mac IE just endlessly refreshed.
The other option which does work on iCab and other options is WRP, but login pages don't work on it so I'm stuck in that way. Unless I can get browservice to work under iCab, it looks like I can't use System 7 for that.
Luckily that isn't a problem on this site though, sending this message through my 3400c with iCab on System 7.6.

well, I cheated and used a newer version of iCab that requires OS 8.5 or newer. I apologize for my sins. Anyways though, that actually did somewhat work. The interface for browservice loads now but I can't actually type anything into the URL bar for it. I'll keep experimenting.

The challenge has started :-)

As for web proxies, I'm actually getting along quite well by using frogfind.com. But then I mostly frequent pages that are actually made for retro computers or are still somewhat compatible, so I don't really have that need.

What would be cool is a way to teach iCab to use a SSL proxy. I can see in Preferences that it - supposedly - supports proxy servers, but wants the info being fed as a file in a special (?) format. Would be interesting to enhance iCab 2.9.9 to being able to open https pages. Unfortunately, a lot of interesting retro compatible pages hide behind SSL these days..rather mindless.

Posting this from my IIci running System 7 btw :)

I got a good amount of stuff ready on my 3400c yesterday, mainly file transfer. Still setting up though, the 1400 needs to be updated from 7.5.3 to 7.6.1 and I don't have BBEdit installed on either yet. Also got to get the files for my website on there. So far so good though :)

Anyone else going to join in?

Wow! I'm really shocked that last message went through. I clicked post and iCab threw a type 11 and I had to restart. We'll see if it happens again this time haha

Edit: it did...

Awful wet day in UK encouraged me finally try and fix my P475.
Finally got it to boot after fitting a fresh battery.
The old internal HD had died, so had to boot off an external one I keep for emergencies (with 7.5).
Now fitted an alternative (still old) internal HD. It mounted ok, so a good start. Next I need to restore the contents from back-up...-

Well it looks like I won't be able to do website development on my PowerBooks which is a shame. Did a test to see what BBEdit would do with the formatting and it looks like it doesn't work interchangeably with PCs and .html and such. The file BBEdit saved came out as !TESTHTM.L, when I had saved it as "test html" on the mac. As well as such, I'll bet if I move my website's files over to the Mac, it will see them all as "PC" files. If anyone's got an idea on how to get around this, I'd love to hear it. I guess I technically could get it to work this way, but it would mean spending hours fixing the file formatting after I'm done with the whole thing.
