Awwwwh shucks. That's okay though, for now 104MB works fine. I don't really need a new set of RAM after discovering the issue was with my Farallon PN993 network card being physically rough and due to the fact that card shouldve been put to rest several years back.
2 Operating System / Re: Is it possible to completely disable Platinum on OS 8.0-8.1?

I don't know if anyone will side with me on this but with me loading the 8.1 system suitcase into 7.6.1 I believe I've just inadvertently created the Snow Leopard of Mac OS 7.6. At least on those computers that had bugs on 7.6 and 7.6.1, which were fixed with 8.0 and 8.1. Can't believe disk performance went up 50%, perhaps because before OS 8 the implementation for the Alchemy's IDE interface in the OS was not well optimized. And just as a reminder, Mac OS 8 was supposed to be 7.7 until they renamed it... really makes you think! OS 8.5 felt more like a proper "Mac OS 8 Release" compared to 8.0 and 8.1 and now it's pretty obvious as to why.

My PowerMac 6400/G3 with a hybrid 7.6.1-8.1 install and a messy desktop complete with unfinished downloads before the system crashed trying to finish them past 30MB...

Tried it with 8.5 in a VM. It's not exactly pretty and it loads up Appearance Manager but you can't change the settings without the OS 8.5 control panels. Pretty sure some hacking would need to be done here.

Alright, I replaced the System file in my 7.6.1 install (backed up the old one in case something doesn't work) with the 8.1 System file... and WOW! This runs about the same, if not better, than 7.6.1 on my 6400/G3. I ran MacBench 5.0's CPU and Disk tests (Could run more, but I'll also need to get the ISO on this computer without it crashing while downloading such large files even with Monica), and the CPU speed was slightly better. However, disk speed was almost 50% higher on "7.7.1" compared to 7.6.1! Also note that Virtual Memory automatically gets enabled for some reason when you replace the System file so you'll need to disable it again.. at least that's what happened to me. Speaking of which, it's actually not causing a huge slowdown! Honestly I could see some people thinking this is heresy by replacing the 7.6.1 system with OS 8.1... but this does prove that 8.0 and 8.1 are really just jazzed up versions of 7.6. Mac OS 8.5 had a lot of stuff rewritten, and as such, requires Appearance Manager to work. Though I suppose I could try the System file implant from 8.5/8.6 to 7.6.1... however with 8.5 and up Appearance Manager will be enabled. Forever and always.

Interesting... always thought it would have an improvement with the machine but it seems not? I know another source said it would have improvements on select models of the Power Macintosh 6400 but I'm certain it wouldn't need it either way. I'll definitely talk to you about the RAM... would love to max this thing out with reliable modules!

Well, you might be shocked to hear this... It is possible with the right tools! I actually went ahead and tried it myself last night with Mac OS 8.1 and Finder 7.5.6 to success! I used Basilisk II to make a quick setup with 8.1 and a copy of 7.6.1 installed on a separate drive. A lot of things do work, but there are several things you need to bring over from 7.6.1, namely a few control panels that require AppearanceLib and a couple extensions (like the network extension) not present in 8.x for a couple of 7.6.1 control panels to work. I have posted a screenshot of this on the 68kMLA forums as a status update.
8 Operating System / Is it possible to completely disable Platinum on OS 8.0-8.1?
May 24, 2024, 03:56
Not sure if anyone's actually documented this or discovered this... but I'm quite curious about something rather impractical. Since Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1 are much closer to System 7 (almost as if it's Mac OS 7.7), would it be possible to disable platinum entirely and perhaps even port the 7.6.1 (v 7.5.6) finder over to it? This is really something I've thought of for a while, but wasn't sure how it could be done... I love the platinum theme but Mac OS 8.0 and especially 8.1 have some minor bug fixes that could possibly give it an advantage over 7.6.1 (I know the virtual memory bug on the alchemy based systems was fixed), though Appearance Manager has also been known to eat up a considerable amount of resources especially on older macs. I think it could also be doable with 8.5(.1) or 8.6 but as far as I'm aware those are very differently written compared to previous versions and the appearance manager seems to be more of a requirement.
All I'm curious is... is it possible? I might actually try messing around in SheepShaver swapping over different components, but I'm also wondering if anyone's actually tried this before.

I could hook up my 6400 to a 1200p monitor since I have the Radeon 7000 64MB PCI card, but do I want to? Not really. While it would absolutely be quite the experience, I don't feel the need to. I'm quite happy with this machine hooked up to a ViewSonic G771 running at 1024x768@85Hz. While I could try to hook up my 30 inch Cinema display to this, I won't be able to take advantage of the 2560x1600 resolution due to the GPU's limitations. For that I would need the Radeon 9250 PCI, and those are quite pricey!
10 Off Topic Discussion / Re: Windoze 11 AI records everything...

Personally I am not a fan of Microsoft's current state of Windows, I particularly dislike the fact that Windows is now a rolling-release system, and certain versions don't get support after a while unless you update to the latest feature update. Thankfully this isn't an issue with LTSC releases, but I am disappointed to see Windows 11 LTSC 24H2 seems to be more reliant on the AI stuff now. Honestly if Microsoft keeps this up even on x86 computers I'll be switching over to any distro of GNU+Linux as my main OS and I'll have to suck it up when something doesn't work (:

You really can't trust new technology these days, it's sad. Apple had a really scary bug with iOS 17.5 where even the permanently deleted photos start popping back up, and if this is actually true and backed up by many users... Apple could get sued big time. Unfortunately with all the open-source alternative software and operating systems out there, it'll be a while before they're truly going to replace Windows and modern macOS. Granted, Windows 11's particular case with Copilot and the AI back-tracking feature only really works on the newest ARM-based processors... but I could see a lot of this type of stuff coming to other computers as well. What a sad world we live in...

YES!!! What a saint!! I remember trying to set up my 6400 and upgrade it but that was also during a short amount of time when Archive.org was down, and I was getting kinda desperate! Glad to have the resource mirrored in a more reliable manner!!

The Wifi Daynaport emulation has always intrigued me... crazy how people could get that working over SCSI!! If that means going online... I could finally have a dedicated video card and a network card in a IIsi.. fun!! Also would love to see my PowerBook 520 go online once I fix that up some more.

Welp, I jumped the gun on swapping L2 cache chips over and the extra 512KB of cache makes a difference. I also ended up swapping the board over to one from a PSU-dead 6360 I have, because for some reason that board is more stable than the 6400's stock board. I don't care about losing the extra 20mhz on the 603ev for obvious reasons. I do wish my card had a newer G3 chip on it instead of the older Aluminum interconnect version but oh well... this runs perfectly fine and is close to performance to a Power Macintosh G3/300. A card like the Crescendo L2 is not something I wanna mess with too much considering its rarity. The original chips were Galvantech GVT7164D36T-3, the new ones are Samsung K7A403600M-QC22 chips. Both are 36-bit chips but the GVT is 64Kx36 (512KB with two chips), and the Samsung is 128Kx36 (1MB/1024KB with two chips). Metronome now detects the full 1MB of cache and I haven't had any stability issues with the setup, doing everything that made the other one crash (especially trying to get online, though that was the farallon card's fault!)
Yes, you can swap L2 cache chips over... but it isn't for the faint of heart! The Crescendo L2 boards all have the necessary address buses connected to run the 128Kx36 chips even if the original card is a 512KB variant.
Someday I may get into messing with BGA soldering but I'll have to do tons of practice, and I'll need the right tools for it. As for this card I'm leaving it alone until it eventually fails, which these don't seem to anyway. :)

Yeah honestly for 7.6.1 I decided the G3 was enough. Besides you don't get AltiVec support unless you're running 8.6 or above so its not worth it anyway. I also found out you can overclock the system bus to 50MHz on the 6400 which should make it speedier all around; you just need a fan for the 603's heatsink and a 50mhz crystal replacing the 40mhz one. I did find 36-bit cache chips on a scrap board that total to 1MB so that should work on my sonnet card but thats a job I'm not rushing to do for obvious reasons. Solely just going from 512KB of cache to 1MB in case anyone is curious, which should bring a bit of a speed boost to the machine.

Back on 7.6.1 now with the RTL8139 card and its smooth sailing!!!! I also noticed one of my 64MB DIMMs still works, but the other one still doesn't. I have 104MB in here and for now it's perfect. I should definitely try the Radeon 9250 and perhaps even upgrading the L2 cache on my Sonnet card to 1MB so as to match the PowerMac G3's performance a little better. I'm quite good at soldering and I've tried this before until realizing the chips I installed were 32-bit and not 36-bit like the G3 requires. Perhaps someday I'll also see if someone can swap in a G4 chip on the card, and then we'll be flying. AFAIK the 6400 only addresses up to a 400MHz CPU which would still be a nice clock speed. It runs much better with known good LAN drivers and a working LAN card!!
