1 Software / Re: Active newsgroups on usenet to check out

OMG ... It has been a long time. Is comp.sys.alt.mac still active. That is where I,used to go many moons ago. I remember buying a 7100 and trying to move the video card over, but the processors were different. Some kind soul from Kentucky I believe telling this poor candian bush baby, living 250 miles below James Bay, to just reprogram the EPROM. Having no idea, I replied I guess I'll have to buy a new video card. Shortlymafter, I get an email with an attachement reading "Just run this and your video card will be good to go. I did and it was. We just had received internet like a month or two prior and I was on dial up. Instantly, I understood the power of the internet.
Old Fart's tales from the crypt. Enjoy.

Fmp3 runtimes are the only runtimes that will network. For all  other versions, even running peer to peer without server, you need full versions of fmp on each work station.

I went looking. You could also do this with Filemaker Pro. With some hunting, becausemthe apple aite no longer carries the info, I found
FMP 2
FMP3.0v1
FMP4.0v1 and
FMP5.0v1
Will all work with system 7.

Interesting aside...
If you can find Filemaker Pro 3 developer version, once you have a program, you can make your own stand alone runtime versions that will network. This is the only version that will  do this.  They only made that mistake once. :)

Thanks for the comments on the site. I had three sites, this one, one for database development and one for cigar box box guitars. The other two were costing money to keep up. Homepage was pretty nice to use. It has been quite a while since I used it.

It was in that time I jettisoned the original Mac, memory enhanced and went to an SE. I kept that and had a full page screen formit but also in the next couple of years went through a series of machines. LCII, Mac Duo, Duo Dock with collur card and hard drive. That was a time when things moved very fast.
9 Off Topic Discussion / Re: In praise of non-native English speakers...

English is kind of like the guitar of languages. It is a very hard language to learn well. However, it seems that it is one of the easier languages to learn to speak/write fair to badly and that is also coupled with a great forgiveness of non native speakers for their diction (we understand you are going through hell). This is probably part of why it is so widely spoken. It is probably also why it is constantly changing. We will pillage what non native speakers bring to us and incorporate it directly into the language. We appropriate shamelessly.
10 Off Topic Discussion / Re: Happy 40th birthday, Macintosh!

i went back and searched out the original prices for the equipment I bought in March of 1984.

128k Mac.              <>$2,900
Imagewriter Printer      <>$600
Secondary disk dive      <>$500
Separate numeric keypad. <>$100

Total $US.               $3,100

Exchange rate $US->$CDN <> 1.27

Price $CDN  $3,937.     <> $4,000

On top of that was a hidden 13.5% manufacturer's salesvtax and a 7% retail sales tax.

That would have given the lowest, read that Toronto price. I bought in Timmins, 400 miles into the bush.

I had origially posted that I paid about $3500 ...It was actually over $5,000 CDN. That was an exensive purchase.
11 Software / Re: Does anyone have a stash of FileMaker templates?

cballero ... I need you to tell me how to send this manual to you. It is about 18 mb. If your email provider can handle a simple email address will do. This is the written material that goes with the developer's edition. As FNP3 and FMP4 are of the same family, both using the extension fmp.3, if I remember correctly, this should be pretty good for both

cballero .... I had some time and got a manual scanned. I sent you an email.

Cballero ... I need to go back into my way back machine I have FMP3 developer version. The runtimes will network. If I remember correctly, you would be running on a peer to peer basis and in that environment, the first one to open the program is the host. I can't remember the particulars, but I probably have them.
If you are going with full version on a network you need individual apps with different serial numbers.
There were some really good books on FileMaker Pro. If uour local library is poky at clearing things out, you might get lucky. that woild give you a reference. I think somewhere I have a full book on CD...I will look.
There are data limits for each verson, getting larger as time goes on. I think fmp3-4 was about 30 mb.
Anyway,  over the next couple of days I will try to take a look through my stuff. Then I can tell you better what I have.

Cballero, I still have a pile of the old machines. That ia the joy and the curse of having worked for yourself from 1983 through to 2019.
beige G3 with upgraded processor
7100 with acellerator and larger hard drive ... It has issues ... I will work on that one.
AGP graphics I tried to have it brought back but it seems pretty much gone.
3x PB1400's. One needs a hard drive and one needs a screen ribbon.

Into the osX era
12" G4 Powerbook .... needs either mother voard or someone to put in a new PRAM capacitor on board.
13" Mac Book Pro, late 2010 ... my newest machine.

Aside from some web sites & video, I would be quite happy on my favourite PB1400 once I get the acreen fixed. it has an accellerator, maxed memory, wifi card and a compact flash for a second drive. Between 7.6 for things that will run quickly and 8.6 for better browsing, I would not be missing much.
