I was wondering if anyone has a stash of FileMaker templates? I looked in the MG, but it's like searching a needle in a haystack!

Ideally, anything from FileMaker three to six would be great! :D

@Lichen Software: You did? That's awesome! 8) I need a little help! ;)

So I have a few pet projects, some are geared for some really small organizations that work kids, and I know they would love not only to have a bunch of edutainment learning programs and fun games for the kiddos they work with, just there's literally no budget for that, and it extends to families with limited resources as well.

I got involved with folks that have a heart for making a big impact in their neighborhoods. In fact, with my own kiddo, I have connected with some friends who happen to homeschool their kids and so I wanted to kind of test to see if I could help them create a home-to-home LAN to give them an alternative to Google and and Microsoft's cloud platforms, that while really cheap to practically free, most of the parents would love to disconnect from the privacy concerns attached to those and similar free offerings. My kid had some of the homeschoolers at the house for a party and they all gathered around her Pismo and later had asked their parents if they could have a cool laptop with all of the games like my kid has! :)

A few of the parents totally wouldn't mind saving-up the cash to have the hardware tools to give their kids something like this (if their kiddos promise to use it and not drop interest after a short while) and others have Chromebooks, so I began researching how to keep the Chrome OS on for the Android apps plus get Mac OS running as well (plus I love the Mac OS for my own Chrome Macintoshing) :P

So far on Chrome OS I can install FM 3 and 4 on three 68k Basilisk II emulators (Android app and two versions on Chrome's Linux) and FM 3-6 on the Linux side using Wine for a SheepShaver PowerPC Mac emulator. So long as long as there's an actual OS7 to OS9-capable Mac to run the old FM app or server, the Android BII and Linux BIIs can only log-in as clients provided you select slirp on their newer Macs, PCs, Chromebooks or even tablets, they just can't host! I also discovered that 1) you can't serve two version of FM from the same Mac, and 2) when you have a local file and try to open that same file but hosted elsewhere, your local one gets edited, not the hosted one! :o

One of the homeschooling parents manages projects for a living, so they would love the power of FM running on a real or emulated Mac and asked me to see if I could figure out the things that would be needed and they could run with it, especially if it works with their kids Chromebooks, too. I, on the other hand, while I do have time for light-database lifting, would rather not reinvent the wheel if I can avoid it and that's where the FM template ask comes in, the idea being to repurpose as many templates as possible to cut down actual dev time but be able to reuse them for as many projects as possible, ideally along with cool and updated icons and backgrounds so everyone enjoys using the FM files even more!

As far as how all of this could be repurposed for the small groups that work with kids that I help out with, I scored some small older EOL but fully working convertible ARM touch-screen Chromebooks with Android but no Crostini (a Linux install would remove the Android apps :() on liquidation for $50 (plus adapters for $10 more) I've gotten about 15 of them and tested a couple with Basilisk II and FM 3-4 both work nicely, as clients only, of course (and a great way to extend the life of older Android-only Chromebooks, especially ARM-based)!

One thing I did want to ask about: how can FM 3 be used to network an office with FM 3 bound, run-time shared files without a bunch of sn codes (can one unique sn be used for all clients maybe)? I shared my FM 4 file as a bound FM 3 run-time and it worked, but wasn't savvy enough to know how to then configure clients, so I installed a couple of FM 4s to test editing shared files instead :(

This is my most ambitious Classic Mac project! :D am I biting a little more than I can chew? most likely ;) is it worth it? for the kids, absolutely! :)

I'm also beginning to agree with Mike, FMP 3 (along with 4, both) seem to be a powerhouse as far as speed and capability running on real (and emulated Macs as clients) Classic Macs (might be of interest: I spied a FM4 Server Trial on the Dev CD? Could that be an unreleased version that got packaged with that version? And if that trial can be registered, might it become a full install? :o) Now that would be a really cool find! 8)

And if 68040 does share his advanced BII networking secrets, I'd love to add QuickPopup to the mix as well so everyone can chat online! In my tests, QP receives chats, which isn't bad, but sending them fails (due to slirp limitations I imagine)

I'll upload my FM templates later 2day and then Bolkonskij  can hand them over to you.

Btw. why does Lichen have a logo and we don't??? :o

I feel discriminated!

Ha ha, ikr? :o

Well, original S7T users had the option of using avatars; I never thought about having one, so mine is avatarless. When the site was reborn, part of streamlining the new S7T was removing that function; I thought, it'd be nice to choose, but it's a 'granfathered' feature :P

But, thank you for doing this 68040!!! 8)

After the kids get to play with various titles, I'm hoping that through BII on lower-end Chromebooks (or higher-end ones for those who can afford them to run SS) put a FM file for games and programs that captures what titles from the MG they tried and what incompatibilities they may have encountered on their platform. This can then be used to further compile figures for lists like Adespoton's that seek to know these things! ;)

The options are limitless here, a real win-win! :D

Cballero ... I need to go back into my way back machine I have FMP3 developer version. The runtimes will network. If I remember correctly, you would be running on a peer to peer basis and in that environment, the first one to open the program is the host. I can't remember the particulars, but I probably have them.
If you are going with full version on a network you need individual apps with different serial numbers.
There were some really good books on FileMaker Pro. If uour local library is poky at clearing things out, you might get lucky. that woild give you a reference. I think somewhere I have a full book on CD...I will look.
There are data limits for each verson, getting larger as time goes on. I think fmp3-4 was about 30 mb.
Anyway,  over the next couple of days I will try to take a look through my stuff. Then I can tell you better what I have.

That's super, Lichen Software! Those runtimes, a CD book on FM and any and all FM files I can use as study models to see how features are actually implemented (I've always been passionate about learning new things) all sound like major Mac Gold to me right now! :D

I'm pretty good at design aspects, updating and prettying things up to look 'profesh' (wait.. is that a word? lol) but I'm wanting otherwise at programming anything completely from scratch (I know my limits) I can, however, do some repurposing as long as I'm not performing some serious FM surgery (I don't want to cut something vital from a process, yikes!) here's an .fm3 template I updated recently:

https://revontulet.org/2024/01/28/18877ca6398149b39f7f1fa1e9e79791.png

I see FM as a very capable Intranet front and back-end (and I think?) something missing from the early web. If this element already existed, I never saw or noticed it. FM's advanced tricks were the envy of developers back then, especially when coupled with its easy-to-work-with design process. It's clearly addicting (even if like me, I don't really know what I'm doing, lol.. I'm more like always learning bit-by-bit the best I can) I applaud FM masters, as they can bend FM to just about anything they desire! When I first encountered FM, I knew it was a game-changer and that the sky was the limit with it! :)

Another thing that although it might seem dated in our modern times but I thought about doing is using a tool like FM to teach HTML and JavaScript coding? I really enjoyed working on websites many years ago, and still roll-up my sleeves at my job with their WordPress site here and there, so I imagine it's still a relevant step that might help young people see if web or software dev might be their thing? I was inspired by Joe Barta, a guy who taught this topic in the mid-nineties with a catchy title, "So you want to build a web page!"

Here's Joe Barta's original tutorial in 1996:
http://web.archive.org/web/19961215082508id_/http://junior.apk.net/~jbarta/tutor/makapage/index.html

And Joe's site's final cache by archive.org was September of 2022:
http://web.archive.org/web/20220928220332id_/http://www.pagetutor.com/index.html

This little experiment of mine may (hopefully?) also keep the Classic Mac alive with the help of younger generations; I know my kid uses and loves the Mac and I hope this feeling, even if simply for nostalgia's sake, continues to grow and spread; I mean, it's a great feeling! :)

There a few on this UMICH site ready for downloading, if there's any that you don't have in your collection (https link). More "example" or "solution" than "template" but I would think that several could be adapted or used as templates or for learning purposes.

The "00index.txt" file at the top of that page gives a brief description of each db's purpose.

The download named "allweekcalendar3.02.sit.hqx" looks like it could be usefully adapted for use in some of those wishlist's you've outlined.

Of course there is the Claris templates collection on their version 3.0 CD at the MG - DL#2 on that page.
Custom installs of FMPro 4.0/4.1 would also be a good source of Claris produced template/solutions, if you haven't installed them already.

Thanks, MTT! :)

I'll definitely check both links for those templates! This project is close to the heart for me, especially with the buzz my kid's Mac and programs/games created with her friends! :D
