1 Classifieds / Wanted: Sonnet G3 Upgrade for 1400c
November 06, 2010, 22:32
Hi everyone!

My Powerbook 1400c was stolen, and I'm in the process of setting up a new one. It's still a workhorse writing machine for me, I love the keyboard feel, but unfortunately, the one I was able to get was the 117Mhz version. The one that got stolen had a very nice Sonnetc Crescendo/PB upgrade, which made it very fast and easy to work on using 7.6.1.
So I'm looking for that processor upgrade. Either just the processor, or the whole powerbook if the seller doesn't want to part with it. I'll pay a fair price for it.
Thanks in advance!! I hope I can find it!!

2 Software / How to search content of files in 7.6 ?
March 18, 2009, 22:14
I found quite a few programs on info-mac that do this type of search, including a couple where you could use grep strings.
I've tested them and found Grapple (filename on info-mac: grapple-13.hqx) to be the best overall for my current needs. Simple interface, good presentation of results, and also one of the fastest search times.
Another one that might be useful is Ultra Find, which has a separate module that can index all your files for even faster searches, although the user interface wasn't as good as Grappler.
Also good ones were Find In Files and iSearch. There were some more, but it wasn't what I was looking for.
All of them worked on my pb1400c with System 7.6 without any problems.
3 Software / How to search content of files in 7.6 ?

I had forgotten to look into info-mac, and was searching through google instead. Dumb move for this kind of task! I looke into info-mac's archive and got a bunch of search tools that do this job.
Thumbs up for info-mac!
4 Software / How to search content of files in 7.6 ?
March 18, 2009, 15:03
Hi,
Does anybody know of a search utility that will let me find files (in my case, text files only) by searching their content, as opposed to file name only? This feature became available on MacOS 8.6, I think, as an option of the regular system 'find file' feature, but isn't available on System 7. I've been looking for such a program, but haven't been able to find it. The number of text files I work with has been growing considerably, and the need to search for what's inside them has grown along with it.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!
5 Hardware / Lombard & Pismo Keyboard

Wallstreet keycaps are taller than Lombard/Pismo's. It might fit, but you probably wouldn't be able to close the lid without putting some unwanted pressure on the LCD.

Nope. You are pretty much stuck with the bronze keys. I have read on some powerbook forum about the keyboards from the first ibook (the clamshell one) being interchangeable with the Pismo's, but then you're stuck with white keys. And I don't even thing that they actually are interchangeable, probably not. The Wallstreet and the Kanga have different key form factors altogether and won't work for sure.
By the way, I used to like how the bronze keys looked. And also liked the keyboard feel for touch typing.
7 Operating System / Menu Font Size?
February 04, 2009, 14:18
There's this utility called 7tuner which, If I remember correctly, will change the menu fonts to whatever you want. See if you can find it, shouldn't be too hard. I used it to reverse the menu bar/font colors. I'm just not sure if the size could be changed. If it does change it, it's pretty easy and straightforward.
Let me know if you can't find it, I still have it here somewhere.

Mac OS X is so infinitely superior to Mac OS 7/8/9

Hell, I use a 1400 running 7.6 as my main work machine, and even I agree with that statement. OS X is way, way superior to 7. I'll be the first to admit that. Just take web browsing, for example. It's such an inherent part of personal computing today, and I'll again be the first to admit that it is just a crappy experience to browse the net through System 7. I'll still keep using my 1400c and 7.6 for all my writing needs, mostly because of the gorgeous keyboard on the 1400c and because my text editor is a VERY modified Tex-Edit Plus that I just can't get anywhere (the closest thing would be to modify emacs, but then I'd have to invest a lot of time on the steep learning curve). For anything else - if I had to work with audio, video, or anything internet related besides simple email, OS X and even Windows XP is a better solution, hands down.
9 Software / Anybody has Keyquencer?
January 15, 2009, 17:04
I use Keyquencer more and more, ever since I first tried it, and this week I hit the ceiling of 50 macros that Keyquencer Lite has. Does anybody have the non-Lite version? I'm willing to buy it from you if you have an original copy. I just can't find it anywhere on the net since Binarysoft doesn't have anything about Keyquencer anymore. I don't even know if their website is of the same company, since it looks so different.
Any help here is appreciated. Also would like to hear if anybody uses it with their System 7 machine.
Thanks!
10 Hardware / My Powerbook 1400c
November 22, 2008, 23:17
My main writing machine is a 1400c with a CF card and a CF-to-IDE adapter too. I second Dan's opinion in that I didn't find it significantly faster than before. Maybe because it was running a relatively more modern HD (10Gigs, compared to the 1Gig drives that originally came with this model). Changing form a 1 Gig drive might give you more speed. The advantages are there though, as I went the CF route mainly to eliminate the HD noise, and also to be able to pick up the notebook while it is running and not have to worry about vibrations affecting the drive. I do have set up a good backup scheme though, as I understand that flash drives have limited read/write cycels.
11 Software / Daily automatic wake-up, HOW?
November 10, 2008, 17:24
Hello everyone,
I would like my 1400c to wake up in the middle of the night, when I'm not using it, so that it could perform my daily backup routine unobtrusively. My backup program can perform daily programmable backups, but I can't find a utility that will wake up my Mac daily at a pre-set time. If anybody knows of a software that will do this, it would be of great help.
Thanks in advance.

PS. The 'Powerbook Setup', and some alarm clock programs I found can wake up the Mac, but you can't set it to automatically do it every day.
12 Operating System / Running system off RAM disk
May 02, 2008, 16:59
500 megs should be plenty for 7.6.1. I remember running my Duo from a RAM disk and it only had 32 megs (though I had 7.5.5 on it, which is smaller). I don't think you will have any problems, and it will fell snappier.
13 Operating System / HFS using swap partition?
May 02, 2008, 02:31
My Powerbook 1400c has a CF card instead of a hard disk. I installed it as if it was a normal hard drive. Just booted from the 7.6 cd and chose the CF when the installer asked me to select a volume. No swap, no ram disk, nothing. It has worked fine ever since.

You're right, a lot of us here use 1400s with wi-fi cards. Search the forums and you'll find some info. The 1400 is my main computer, since I do a lot of typing and its keyboard is one of the best I've used (the other was a Thinkpad).
Anyway, here's a page with a lot of info on going wireless with the 1400:

15 Software / Excellent Word Processor for older Macs
April 10, 2008, 03:27
WriteNow was never ported to PowerPC. Since it was written in 68k assembly code, it would be a very time consuming port.
There was a port for the NeXT computers, but they also used 68k processors.

As for it's status, I think it's owned by The Learning Company, or something like that. The last versions, though, were made by T/Maker. AFAIK, it's not released as freeware.

I remember reading some usenet post by one of the main developers, talking about the history of the program. I've also seen current word processors' developers mention WriteNow as one of their software's influences. MarinerWrite comes to mind.
