I have a 7200 that has (relatively speaking) a lot of RAM - like 500 Mb. I was thinking I should be able to run the OS (7.6.1) off a RAM disk and thus have a very snappy system. Is this possible. Any pointers ? Thanks, Rick |

500 megs should be plenty for 7.6.1. I remember running my Duo from a RAM disk and it only had 32 megs (though I had 7.5.5 on it, which is smaller). I don't think you will have any problems, and it will fell snappier.

I like that ... 500 MB !!! It should be a good speedy system 7 ![]() Could you please tell me how to mount the system folders to the RAM disk after we press power button ? I was thinking the RAM disk should be nothing before power up, right ? I would like to set the same at my PPC9600 which have 400MB. Thanks.

Ok I found this link which has a lot of useful info on RAM disks. I'm gonna try it later this weekend and will post my results. http://www.themacintoshguy.com/mactips/archive/tip6.shtml

Maxima was an excellent product for these purposes. It would save the contents of your ram disk on shutdown, and it also allowed you to double the ram set aside by using compression techniques: your 400 MB would thus become 800MB - but remember that you need also to leave enough ram to run your programs.

Is it still available for download the "Maxima" ? tried google but not found any place to download. Sounds like Maxima can make the boot disk from RAM disk.

Ok I created a RAM disk of about 80 MB, copied my system folder over and set the ram disk as the startup disk. System boot time (7.6.1) went from 1 min to about 25 secs. A 50% reduction, not bad ! I imagine I could get it even lower by using a trimmed down version of the system folder; ie, not copying over unused extensions, etc. I also found the AppDisk utility here, but have not figured out how to use it as the startup disk. http://www.mac.org/utilities/appdisk/
