Hi, Does anybody know of a search utility that will let me find files (in my case, text files only) by searching their content, as opposed to file name only? This feature became available on MacOS 8.6, I think, as an option of the regular system 'find file' feature, but isn't available on System 7. I've been looking for such a program, but haven't been able to find it. The number of text files I work with has been growing considerably, and the need to search for what's inside them has grown along with it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! |

I had forgotten to look into info-mac, and was searching through google instead. Dumb move for this kind of task! I looke into info-mac's archive and got a bunch of search tools that do this job. Thumbs up for info-mac!

I am not aware of any utility specifically for that, but there probably is one lurking somewhere. Older Norton Utilities came with a very good find feature, but I do not recall if it was limited to file names or did content as well. Nisus word processing software had a powerful search feature built on a subset of "grep". Typically it would only search in the file you were working on, however you could create a "Search List" and then Nisus would search all the files in the list. Search is a very resource intensive operation. By the time Apple included a content search feature, they were shipping G4 systems. And in honesty I do not think most people were all that happy with Sherlock's performance anyway. Sherlock and Spotlight create an index and searches are done on the index and the search is only as good as the index that has been created. A full search of file content in OS X can be done using grep from the command line. It is very accurate, however it very slow compared to Spotlight. I am not aware of any grep software for older Mac OSes. bill

I found quite a few programs on info-mac that do this type of search, including a couple where you could use grep strings. I've tested them and found Grapple (filename on info-mac: grapple-13.hqx) to be the best overall for my current needs. Simple interface, good presentation of results, and also one of the fastest search times. Another one that might be useful is Ultra Find, which has a separate module that can index all your files for even faster searches, although the user interface wasn't as good as Grappler. Also good ones were Find In Files and iSearch. There were some more, but it wasn't what I was looking for. All of them worked on my pb1400c with System 7.6 without any problems.
