Is it possible to change the size of the font used in the Apple menus of OS7, 8 or 9?  I would like to be able to run 1024x768 mode, but I find the menus and such really small.  I figured out how to change the size of text for icons, the control strip, and documents in OS 8, but not menus.

Thanks,

David

Outside of Kaleidoscope skins that completely change the entire user interface, no.

Kaleidoscope might be an answer.  How hard is it to configure/program to one's liking?  Can you take a template somebody's already made and modify it?  Also, I tried it out and I didn't like the spinning animation when you open a file or a folder? Is there a way to turn that off?  To me, it's really annoying.

Thanks,
David

The size and the font for the menu bar is contained in the system file and can be edited. You will be able to change the size of the font and the font as well using ResEdit. Geneva, Monaco and Chicago are the only fonts stored in the system, so if you wish to use a different font, it will be necessary to use something like the Font/DA Mover to install the font you wish to use in the System. If you do go for a different font, it will need to be a bitmap font and have the right size that you wish to use.

There are online references giving definitions of what the various resources in the System File are for. Many of the resources have names that make it somewhat evident what they contain. The menu bar height is also set in the resources and it would need to be changed as well to accommodate a larger font size.

Using ResEdit is fraught with peril and you can easily make your system un-bootable. So proceed with great caution. Use a copy of the System File, read about resources and what they do and how to make changes in them.

ResEdit documentation can still be found here, ResEdit Reference.

Hmm....I guess maybe I didn't phrase my question correctly.  Is it possible to increase the menu font size by editing a Kaleidoscope Theme?  If so, what kind of programming level are we talking about?

Thanks.

There's this utility called 7tuner which, If I remember correctly, will change the menu fonts to whatever you want. See if you can find it, shouldn't be too hard. I used it to reverse the menu bar/font colors. I'm just not sure if the size could be changed. If it does change it, it's pretty easy and straightforward.
Let me know if you can't find it, I still have it here somewhere.
