1 Off Topic Discussion / Left side!
October 26, 2013, 00:30
I have a dual-monitor config, I put it on the far left.  Immediately next to it is Twitter, then Mail on the left display.  Safari lives on the right display, full screen.

I use multiple desktops (Spaces in Apple terminology) to separate uses.  Next space over (when they're launched) is iTunes (left)+iPhoto (right). Then over from that is whatever other apps I happen to have open.

Welcome! You'll find it can be a little quiet here, but friendly.

That model of Performa shipped with a custom version of System 7.1 - and System 7.5 is *MUCH* more usable if you want to connect to more modern machines.  (You can connect over AppleTalk to an OS X machine running up to 10.3 for file sharing, you can use iCab to browse the internet, etc.)

And like many jungles, this one only gets occasional human presence. :-P

But eventually you'll get a reply.
4 Hardware / "Daily"? Late 2006 iMac.
June 09, 2012, 01:23
I use a white Core 2 Duo iMac as my daily desktop.  Right next to it is an iLamp, er, iMac G4, that I use very often.  (17", the last OS 9 bootable model iMac.)  It's kind of fun having the first and the last 17" iMacs next to each other.

On Macintoshgarden is a descripition of Apple System Software Recovery CD 1. I dont know if the WGS software is included, but you might take a look.

No, it isn't.  I have that CD.  It has the base OS, but I'm looking for the complete original load, not just the OS.

I'm sure most people reading these forums already have a set.  (Or in my case, 17 sets.)
8 Classifieds / Power Macintosh 8600/300 for sell
October 08, 2010, 07:42
One trick to eBay that I've found is that for older potentially valuable, but only to a small audience, items, is to have one of two methods:

List high, and keep re-listing until it sells.  This may take *MONTHS*.

List *REALLY* low, and let a bidding war start.  Obviously, this will only work if it will get even two bids; so you need to look at completed auctions that sold.  Not current auctions, not unsold completed auctions, but ones that sold.  Look at the prices of those.

Unfortunately, there have been no 8600s or 9600s that have sold recently, so you'll just have to keep searching every so often to get a good gauge.  I see a few 7300s, 7600s, and beige G3s, but all of those sold for $30-$60.  While an 8600 may have a little more value than those, it's likely not going to be *THAT* much more value, so if you really want to make over $100 for it, "list high and keep re-listing" is about the only way it's going to happen.

.dsk is an extension often used by disk images of Apple II disks.
10 Software / AppleShare IP alternative?
August 05, 2010, 04:29
I've been looking for ASIP 5 for awhile, too.  Haven't had much luck.

By the way, this is a rather "low volume" message board, two hours between posts won't help; as many users of this board only log on every few days at the best.
11 Hardware / "Transceiver"

What you probably have is an AAUI adapter. (Or possibly a less Apple-specific AUI.)

An (A)AUI connects to an Ethernet interface, not a serial port.  They are from the days before RJ-45 was the standard, when you might have one of a few different physical cables connecting your network.  Even if you happen to have something that looks the same in the computer; unless you're *SURE* it's an Ethernet card, don't plug the adapter in!

The people that collect Dell, Compaq, etc, seem to be the "collect EVERY old computer" sorts.

I collect Apple, "other architecture" (NeXT, SGI, HP PA-RISC, etc,) plus a few select IBMs for now.  I'd like to add at least one of each major "other architecture" machine (Sun, Alpha, Amiga...) and would like a few of the "significant" PCs (HP's original OmniBook, for example.)

It's the company I work for's product, Tripwire.  (Specifically the product Tripwire Enterprise.)

I do tech support.  Thankfully, given the nature of the product, I usually get very technically-competent customers.

At work, the software product I support is on version 7.  (Specifically 7.7.1.)  It is not a Macintosh product.  It is a high-end UNIX and Windows server product.

I just got a new trouble ticket whose title is "Help upgrading from 7.0.1 to 7.6.1."

I immediately thought "Why is one of my customers asking about ancient MacOS versions?"
15 Software / Got a good dig in at MS on Twitter...

Okay, so this is only vaguely System 7 related...

One of the accounts I follow on Twitter is @MSWindows.  (Hey, I entered some contests when Win7 was coming out.)  Today, they retweeted someone:

I just discovered Sticky Notes in Windows 7, where have you been all my life.

So, of course, I had to reply:

On the Mac OS.  Since 1994.
