Hardware / Re: Getting a Mac SE/30 a good idea?
September 09, 2023, 12:27 |
If you can get one that's been recapped using solid state capacitors, then I would say yes. If it hasn't been recapped, then it's a ticking time bomb. |

Hardware / Re: Getting Woz to build a modern System 7 Mac for us :)

How do you go about doing that, though, without violating Apple's patents? Apple has never been a company that shies away from a good patent fight, and they have the legal muscle to pummel anyone into submission. A C&D letter, alone, will probably be enough to scare away anyone wanting to do this. I don't think Woz, or anyone else, will touch this project idea with a 50 foot pole. It's not as if Apple has been defunct for decades, like many other computer companies of the 70's and 80's. They are still here, stronger than ever, and ready to vigorously defend their intellectual property, as they have shown repeatedly, in the past. |

I never used one when they were new, but I did buy an eMate, for the collection a while ago. |

I wonder if it's possible to run System 7, in ProxMox?

I took a chance on one on ebay, many years ago, and the risk paid off. Not only was it still working, when I opened it up, the board had been recapped with solid state capacitors, unlike the IIfx, that I took a chance on a few years earlier, that was completely melted inside due to a combination of leaking capacitors, and leaking batteries. |

Can someone link to a pic of this in action? |

There's a lot of neat things, for several kinds of retro systems there. It's a good one to bookmark, to go back to later. |

Operating System / Re: System 7.6 on a clamshell?
August 01, 2023, 20:59 |
I'm just wondering how this worked out for the OP, because I was always under the impression that you couldn't downgrade Macs to versions older than the one that they originally shipped with. A clamshell iBook would have arrived too late to ship with any version of System 7. In 1999, it would have been the end of the MacOs 8 era, and MacOs 9 would release late in the year. |

Off Topic Discussion / Re: What old tech do you still use - other than Macs?

I have a phonograph from 1962 that I bought on ebay years ago from a retired repairman who completely reconditioned it. |

Hardware / Re: 2021: Which mac are you using?
June 04, 2021, 09:27 |
The only Macs that I have that still see any use in 2021 is a 2008 Mac Pro, followed by a 2010 Macbook. All the older stuff is not really useful anymore. |

Hardware / Re: Type of CPU daughtercards for Tsunami-architecture clones?

I have a 7500 with a Sonnet G4 1000 installed in it. I also have a ZIF carrier card with a G4 500 mounted that I haven't installed in anything yet. |

Emulation / Re: Emulators on System 7
June 04, 2021, 07:51 |
I remember someone once tried to emulate PowerPC on a Quadra 605 and run OS X on it. It got to the gray loading screen and froze there for a really long time until the hard drive burned up from all the thrashing. |

You're aware that those games are still under copyright, right? |

Software / Re: The best video playback on System 7, Mac OS 8.1 and OS 9
June 04, 2021, 07:46 |
The fastest video card that I have that works with a beige Mac is a Radeon 9200. Unless there's something faster than that that I don't know about, I would use the limitations of that card as a general guide of what is possible. |

Operating System / Mac OS 8.0/8.1
June 04, 2021, 07:31 |
I'm curious to know if anyone thinks like I do, that Mac OS 8.0/8.1 should also be included here? My reasoning is that the only reason that those versions are named MacOS 8 at all, is because of Steve Jobs using the naming as a sneaky way of putting the Mac clone makers out of business, since they were only licensed for System 7.There is a very high degree of software and hardware compatibility between System 7.6.1 and 8.1, and 8.5 is a completely different beast, breaking back compatibility with 68k Macs, entirely. 8.0/8.1 are really more like further developments of System 7, that could just as easily have been released as such, than an entirely new OS. |
