As I helped to answer a question regarding MPEG-4 playback on a G3 in another forum, my mind drifted back to System 7 (and 8.0-8.1, the forgotten 'middle' OS, that was more of a marketing move by Apple to dump the clone market, lol).

I know I did talk about VCD video playback a few years ago:

Another thread also looked at MPEG-4 playback on OS9:

So we come right back to the unasked question, 'What's the highest quality video playback achievable on a Pre-G3 PPC Macs running System 7.x-8.1, 8.5/6 and 9.x?'

Some Macs, like the Powerbook 1400, did not have a dedicated video graphics card, so it had no QuickTime video hardware acceleration. But on PPC Macs w/video cards under Mac OS 7.x-8.1, what was possible/achievable?

It may lead to what's already been talked about, but with some digging and testing we may be surprised at what we can find :) who knows? a Mac User or MacWorld issue from back in the day may have some hidden tidbits! I'd love to hear other forum members' thoughts and experiences on this topic!

The fastest video card that I have that works with a beige Mac is a Radeon 9200. Unless there's something faster than that that I don't know about, I would use the limitations of that card as a general guide of what is possible.

Neat! That's right O.M.G., video cards are the champs that provide more lift to whatever your editing or playing back.. it's not all about the software, lol!!! :D
