1 Software / Netscape 4.8 install issues
March 12, 2007, 02:55
I'll check that Quickdraw thing.  I did a complete wipe of my hardrive and reinstall of the System software, I was trying to pull the "Do install this, do not install that" stuff out memory.  As for the other stuff.  Internet connection seems fine.  IE has no problem with it.  MacSSH has no problem, either, nor Network time (although it doesn't seemed have heard about the new Daylight Savings time).  Since I'm working with a relatively clean install, there hasn't been time to add a lot of 3rd party stuff.  Most everything has come right off this site.  Other network related products are Network Time, IE, MacSSH, and VNC.  Other than that I've pretty much been pulling stuff off of your recommended updates, including OT 1.1.2 and Quicktime 5, but I don't know if I've done the Flash player, yet.  I dont' think so, but the home page is the Netscape default one, so I would guess that if it still exists, it's one they made an effort to make compatible with a fresh install of their browser, but I don't know.  I'm not sure how to change the home page without being able to actually run Netscape.  Maybe there's a preference file somewhere I can edit.

A search for Quickdraw only shows quickdraw 3D stuff, so hopefully I got that right.

I'll have to see what extensions I've got running and play with taking them out to see if it does any good.  I remember the "find the troublesome extension" game, but not fondly.  ;-)

Thanks for help, Dan.  I'll let you know if any of that pans out.
2 Operating System / Don't tell me how to shut down

You guys are my heroes, again.  Goodbye to annoying lectures from my laptop about situations it brought about.  Thanks.
3 Software / Netscape 4.8 install issues
March 11, 2007, 19:52
I don't know anyone else has similar issues, or if I'm missing something simple just because I've forgotten so much about using System 7 before reviving my old laptop (PB 1400c/166), but Netscape 4.8 isn't playing nice.  The install seemed to go fine, but every time I try and run it, it locks up, but not until it goes through the whole load process, give me a browser window, pretends to load up the home page (even to the point of showing me some progress statistics about what percentage of the page has been loaded), and then nothing.  No page shows up,  the mouse will not let me switch to another application, and eventually the mouse freezes, too.  Force Quit won't work, and I'm forced to reboot.  I tried allocating more memory (aside-nothing makes me appreciate OS X more than trying to guess how much memory I need for all my Classic applications), but the problem persists, even after a re-install.  Any thoughts?

My next step is to try a reinstall with all my extentions off (which I should have tried last time) and then try a lower version of Netscape, but before I do all that, I thought there might be some known issues that someone might clue me in on.

Thanks.
4 Operating System / Don't tell me how to shut down
March 11, 2007, 19:32
Are you serious or are you just messing with me?

I know the proper way to shut down, which is why that window annoys me.  The only time I see it when I am forced to restart because the computer locks up on me, and that is why I'd like to turn that window off.  When I want to turn the computer off, I select "Shut down."  The only time I see that annoying window is when I'm forced to use Ctr+Command+on/off to force a reboot because the machine has locked up on me.  Then the machine, which left me with no other choice (other than to leave it frozen forever), scolds me for having forced a reboot.

Can I turn that off?  I had forgotten how annoying that is, when I'm forced to restart, and then my restart is delayed by a window telling me how I should shut down in the future, to avoid that window.  I'd love to disable that window if possible.
6 Hardware / PB2400c Issues
January 13, 2007, 04:19
I can't speak to the floppy drive issue, but I just had to deal with a similar problem with my 1400, and I was able to transfer files between it an my iMac using a compact flash card.  My printer has CF reader and I picked up a PCMCIA CF adapter card for like 10 bucks somewhere.  I've had a few hiccups, but all-in-all it's worked out, and it can transfer a lot more than a floppy.

Also Dan has some good info on the site about burning CDs that can be read by the System 7 OS, so if you can burn CDs, and have a SCSI port (the 2400 does, right?), then that may be something to look into.  I'm finding that 10 years down the road, a lot of my floppies are failing, and my most reliable software loads are coming from CD.

And with the 1400 I'm seeing drives for sale on ebay most of the time, so that might be worth checking out, but someone who has your model can probably speak better to your specific hardware.
7 Operating System / Two System folders, one hard drive?

Hi, I have a powerbook 1400 and dual boot 7.6.1 and 8.6 using system picker I just partiion the drives 50/50 one for each. It was the least headached way for me to solve it. haven't had any troubles for 9 months.

I think I'm misunderstanding.  I thought the System Picker was an alternative to partitioning.  I like the partitioning idea, and if it's possible, that's the route I'll go.  I just was under the impression that without the original install disks for 8.5, I wouldn't be able to reinstall it.  But what I'm hearing on the apple forums is that that's not true; that the entire contents of my hard drive can be copied to an external source, like a compact flash card, and copied back to the hard drive and remain bootable.  I guess the test will be to see dragging everything to the CF makes a bootable flash card.  If it does, I don't have to worry about losing 8.6 when I partition the hard drive.
8 Operating System / Two System folders, one hard drive?

Yes, that's what I was looking for!  I've been away from the Classic OS that all these little tricks have fled my brain.  Unfortunately I can't seem to persuade my 7.6 CD to install on the same HD as 8.5.  It goes through the whole routine, but then aborts in the end.  Maybe if I boot from an external source, I'll have better luck than trying to run the install on the disk that I'm using.  Unfortunately I haven't been successful in booting from the CD, which I thought I could do (maybe I have the keystroke wrong, but even picking the CD as the start up volume doesn't work), but maybe I can install 7.6 on to a flash card and try booting from that for the install.  Someone on the Apple forums was in favor on backing up the HD, partitioning, restoring 8.5 to one half, and installing 7.6.1 on the other.  I would like to do that, but can I just drag the contents of my hard drive to another location (I'm guessing I'd need to use a flash card), then drag it back and have it remain bootable?

Anyhow, I'll keep at this.  So far it's pretty cool.  I've to the new Powerbook to share the wireless connection, so that's pretty exciting for me.  If I can get 7.6 on there to, and get VNC to work, I'll be a happy camper.
9 Operating System / Two System folders, one hard drive?

I thought I saw this mentioned somewhere here, but now I can't find it.  I just got a PB 1400 with 8.5 or 8.5.1 installed on it.  It's very pretty, I have to say, and I'd like to keep it around, but I can already see that the memory footprint is a little bigger, and I'd like to try it with 7.6.1.  No original install disks for 8.5, so once it's gone, it's gone (unless I can figure out how to back it up).  Is there a way to install 7.6 on the same drive and still have to option to boot into 8.5?  I expect a partitioned drive could handle this easily, but can I partition a drive with data on it?
10 Hardware / Powerbook screen issues: 1400 cs
January 04, 2007, 14:30
I think you're right.  I opened up the Powerbook and took a look.  I didn't go so far as to actually disconnect the screen and reconnect it, but I move the wires around, make sure they were seated properly, and put everything back together.  After that the whole thing seems a lot better.  There's still one angle where the screen goes crazy and is completely unviewable, but that's when the screen is about 30 degrees from being closed, so, while I'm not sure it should be doing that, it's certainly not interfering with regular use.  I also had to reset the PRAM after messing with the screen wires.  I don't know if that could affect anything, but if it could, then it's possible that the PRAM reset, and not my messing with the wires, is what improved the screen.
11 Hardware / Powerbook screen issues: 1400 cs
January 02, 2007, 23:18
I've had this issue for a while, but since I've recently started on the path to upgrading my 1400, I thought I'd see if anyone has dealt with, and hopefully solved, similar issues.  My passive matrix screen has issues.  It works, but sometimes there's a flicker to it, and sometimes I have to play with the brightness and contrast buttons to make the screen clear.  And adjusting the angle of the screen can throw those settings out of whack.  And sometimes the screen has vertical lines evenly spaced (about a centimeter, I think) that run about a third of the way down the screen from the top, but adjusting the angle can often make those lines go away.  It may be that the screen is dying, but it's been doing that for a few years now.  I just haven't been using the Powebook enough to worry about it.  But since adjusting the angle seems to have an effect (and not just because of the way you have to look head-on at the passive-matrix screen), I'm thinking the screen itself may not be the problem, and I may have issues with the connection or with whatever video driver is in this thing.
Has anyone seen/fixed this?  I may have a 2nd screen on the way, if that's what it takes, but I'm hoping I can get my current screen working and use the 2nd screen, if it's any good, elsewhere.

13 Operating System / 7.6 machine-specific installs?
January 02, 2007, 03:37
Just to report back and confirm what everyone has already said:  I had no problem installing 7.6 (and then the 7.6.1 upgrade) using a generic PowerComputing 7.6 disk.  Now we just wait for the wireless card and see if we can get this thing networked.
14 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?
December 23, 2006, 05:11
That says 7.5.3.  Other documentation refers to the 7.5.5 update, so I'm thinking that perhaps I, or my sister, who had this computer for a while, updated it but later reinstalled the OS from the original disks.  The Wikipedia article on System 7 doesn't really mention what was changed with the 7.5.5 update, so I will probably leave it alone until I can find a copy of 7.6.
15 Operating System / 7.6 machine-specific installs?
December 22, 2006, 21:39
I could be wrong, I often am, but I seem to remember, once upon a time when I was selling Macs in the 90's, that some System installs came in two flavors: PowerBook and Desktop.  Whether this was just certain updates, certain OS versions, or whether I'm making it up, I don't know, but I thought I'd bring it up before I started ebaying for a 7.6 or 7.6.1 disk.  In my ebay searches, some say "Full Power Mac Install," and I know in my selling days, we always meant desktop models when we said "Power Mac" even though the laptops also were starting to get the "Power PC" processors.  Do I need to watch out for this?  Or will any 7.6 or 7.6.1 disk do the trick?  Some auctions mention specific models, but some do not.
