I don't know anyone else has similar issues, or if I'm missing something simple just because I've forgotten so much about using System 7 before reviving my old laptop (PB 1400c/166), but Netscape 4.8 isn't playing nice. The install seemed to go fine, but every time I try and run it, it locks up, but not until it goes through the whole load process, give me a browser window, pretends to load up the home page (even to the point of showing me some progress statistics about what percentage of the page has been loaded), and then nothing. No page shows up, the mouse will not let me switch to another application, and eventually the mouse freezes, too. Force Quit won't work, and I'm forced to reboot. I tried allocating more memory (aside-nothing makes me appreciate OS X more than trying to guess how much memory I need for all my Classic applications), but the problem persists, even after a re-install. Any thoughts? My next step is to try a reinstall with all my extentions off (which I should have tried last time) and then try a lower version of Netscape, but before I do all that, I thought there might be some known issues that someone might clue me in on. Thanks. |

A few ideas: 1) Extension conflict: perhaps you have some third party stuff installed that shouldn't be there? 2) Plug-in conflict: do you have any plug ins installed? Does the home page you are trying to load contain any QuickTime, Flash, or Shockwave content? Have you updated to QuickTime 5 and the latest version of Flash player (both found at other areas of this site)? 3) No network connection: is your network connection reliable and always active? Have you updated to te latest version of OpenTransport 1.1.2? 4) Please tell me you did NOT install QuickDraw GX when you did your system install as outlined here. This has the uncanny ability to be the source of all kinds of random problems that seemingly have nothing to do with this software, and is always worth checking.

I'll check that Quickdraw thing. I did a complete wipe of my hardrive and reinstall of the System software, I was trying to pull the "Do install this, do not install that" stuff out memory. As for the other stuff. Internet connection seems fine. IE has no problem with it. MacSSH has no problem, either, nor Network time (although it doesn't seemed have heard about the new Daylight Savings time). Since I'm working with a relatively clean install, there hasn't been time to add a lot of 3rd party stuff. Most everything has come right off this site. Other network related products are Network Time, IE, MacSSH, and VNC. Other than that I've pretty much been pulling stuff off of your recommended updates, including OT 1.1.2 and Quicktime 5, but I don't know if I've done the Flash player, yet. I dont' think so, but the home page is the Netscape default one, so I would guess that if it still exists, it's one they made an effort to make compatible with a fresh install of their browser, but I don't know. I'm not sure how to change the home page without being able to actually run Netscape. Maybe there's a preference file somewhere I can edit. A search for Quickdraw only shows quickdraw 3D stuff, so hopefully I got that right. I'll have to see what extensions I've got running and play with taking them out to see if it does any good. I remember the "find the troublesome extension" game, but not fondly. ;-) Thanks for help, Dan. I'll let you know if any of that pans out.

Oh yeah... if it's trying to load the big Netscape page, try and stop it before it does. Then shut off CSS per the how to turn off CSS page.

I also use Netscape 4.8, aka "Communicator", on a Powerbook 5300C. I have 48M memory, and allocate 25M to Communicator, VM off, with OS 8.1. This provides the fastest operation. When using a wireless card, there can be very long "hang" times if the SSID you want is not available. Basically, you are waiting for an IP address which isn't forthcoming. As reported on a forum here, enter "Any" for the network, and no encryption, if you are trying to connect to a public network. Good luck.

And a few more things. As our moderator said, plugins can cause these stalls. I recommend disabling any plugins, Javascript, Java, CSS, Flash, Reader, MediaPlayer, RealPlayer, QT, blah blah blah, and see if your stalls are solved. Basically, all of these plugins and programs are outdated, and will only provide you with "upgrade these plugins" messages, and stalls, when they are not available. With luck, if you disable all of this stuff, you will have a basic cheap system to read email, and browse web pages without any formatting or plugins. Don't expect anything more.... . Just my opinion. Good luck.

To be fair, some plug-ins that are outdated (such as QuickTime 5) will not freeze up Netscape, they simply do not try to play media that requires newer plug-ins.
