I could be wrong, I often am, but I seem to remember, once upon a time when I was selling Macs in the 90's, that some System installs came in two flavors: PowerBook and Desktop.  Whether this was just certain updates, certain OS versions, or whether I'm making it up, I don't know, but I thought I'd bring it up before I started ebaying for a 7.6 or 7.6.1 disk.  In my ebay searches, some say "Full Power Mac Install," and I know in my selling days, we always meant desktop models when we said "Power Mac" even though the laptops also were starting to get the "Power PC" processors.  Do I need to watch out for this?  Or will any 7.6 or 7.6.1 disk do the trick?  Some auctions mention specific models, but some do not.

The PowerBook 1400 should install with the generic 7.6 installer. Actually Apple was pretty generous during this software period and many machine specific disks will work fine for installing on a machine supported by that OS.

The PowerBook 3400 requires its own machine specific version of 7.6, but a generic 7.6.1 installer should work fine. The Mach V PowerMacs (8600/250, 8600/300, 9600/300 and 9600/350) require 7.6.1. All non G3 PowerMacs should run 7.6.1 without problems. All 68K Macs with at least a 68030 processor and 32bit clean ROMs should also run 7.6.1. (There are of course RAM and hard drive requirements that need to be met as well.)

Machine specific versions of installer disks I have seen for 7.6 and 7.6.1 have been "Black" themed, while generic installers are "White" themed disks.

I had a 3400c once and installed generic 7.6.1 on it... it seemed to have 2D video issues.  In a nutshell, it seemed really slow.

Anyways, only the 3400c and possibly the 2400c had machine-spacific OSes.  All other supported systems will work with the standard install disks.

2400c definately requires the custom 7.6 CD. I just use 7.6.1 CD (Or Zip with 7.6+7.6.1 Update) though, which is Universal.

Just to report back and confirm what everyone has already said:  I had no problem installing 7.6 (and then the 7.6.1 upgrade) using a generic PowerComputing 7.6 disk.  Now we just wait for the wireless card and see if we can get this thing networked.

Radius Clone 81/110 needs OEM System 7.5 from Radius. The CD-ROM drive requires the CD-ROM ToolKit™ control panel from FWB wich it's part of Radius OEM System 7.5. Then can you install System 7.6 and upgrades, but removing Apple CD-ROM Extension to void conflict extension.

Can you use Wi-Fi cards under System 7?? I want to get the Sonnett Aria Extreme Wi-Fi card for my 7500, but it says that you have to have OSX 10.2.6 or above for Wi-Fi support. I know a bone stock 7500 can't normally go past 9.1, and I am wondering if it is even possible to get Jaguar to run no matter how much I upgrade this thing.

Er.. yes.  You can use authentic Lucent WaveLAN Silver or Gold cards, Proxim Orinoco Silver or Gold cards, and Farallon Skyline cards.  These are for PowerBooks though.  I don't know of any PCI cards that will work, but the current Sonnet cards certainly will not work.

So do you know of any PCI Wi-Fi cards that will work in a 7500 and what is the oldest version of MacOS that will be needed to use it?? I can handle making a dual boot system if I have to.

Using Google I found MacWireless which lists this PCI card which accepts a PCMCIA wireless card. The site says it works with OS 8.1, but it may well have just never been tried with earlier systemts. A longer more detailed search would probably turn up other options as well.

Part of the problem is that by the time wireless networking became common for desktop machines Apple had started including AirPort and had moved beyond System 7. It is certainly a good area to explore and I am sure all users would appreciate hearing of any success you have with wireless on desktops running OS 7.6.

I suppose I could try that eventually, but the compatible systems start with the beige G3, so I don't know if my older 7500 will be able to handle it. At some point I was considering trying a G3/266 desktop motherboard swap, so maybe if that works out I will try this.
