I've recently dusted off my PowerBook 1400.  It's running either System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5.  I've seen both versions listed different places, so I'm not 100% sure.  I'd find out definitively except that, after reading Dan's site, it seems clear I need to get a 7.6.1 disk regardless of what I have now.

You can easily find out by going to the Apple Menu, and choosing "About this Mac" or "About this Computer"

You have to be in the Finder though (click on the desktop).

That says 7.5.3.  Other documentation refers to the 7.5.5 update, so I'm thinking that perhaps I, or my sister, who had this computer for a while, updated it but later reinstalled the OS from the original disks.  The Wikipedia article on System 7 doesn't really mention what was changed with the 7.5.5 update, so I will probably leave it alone until I can find a copy of 7.6.

I have a Macintosh Quadra 650, which ran some version of System 7 (don't remember), but now it doesn't work. On my PC I use Basilisk II,  a 68k Mac emulator (to emulate my Quad650). I use various OS versions occasionally, and the one I'm using now (that I'm typing with) is Mac OS 7.6.1. It is an excellent 68k operating system. It runs blazingly fast on this Intel machine. :)

I have 3 machines currently capable of running System 7. I have a Performa 6116CD running 7.5.1 that I just powered up for the first time since I've owned it (had it for years, but never touched it). Also have a 6100/60 that also has never been touched (don't know what version is on that, I'll get back when I do know), and I also have a 7500 that I have used a few times years ago (can't remember what version that is running, either) that I plan to go nuts upgrading to see how far forward in time I can bring it.  I also plan on getting upgrades for the 61xx's eventually, but they are extremely limited due to the slimline cases. I read about this site on lowendmac.com, so I thought I see what everyone is doing with their old pre-G3's.

I got the old 7500 out and it has 7.5.3 on it. I won an ebay auction for a 7.6 disc and am trying to get a browser for it, so hopefully I'll have a 7.6.1 system online within a few weeks. :-D

Hi guys,

I'll chime in here with my low-spec collection of prehistoric Macs which is a 540c (possibly with the ppc upgrade) and a 3400c. I stumbled upon all this at an office closure sale and didn't really intend to purchase any new hardware or Macs at all. I saw something I wanted and they said they were selling all the computer equippage as one lot. The price was right (too right as I found out when I unloaded it all and found what they had included: loads of cables, a bunch of Mac OS disks along with two ancient lappies.) I wasn't very hopeful about the prospect of the machines working as both looked as though they've been bounced around in the back of a lorry for a few million km and possibly taken a few rides under their own power on the motorway. I was amazed when I connected them to the mains, they both started and the displays are really quite lovely. I haven't seen this quality of graphics and construction on regular wintel boxes. After a bit of research I see that they sold for about 3500 pounds in their day (1994/5) so they certainly should be something special!

There was quite a lot of rubbish on these boxes so I did low level formats and installed a few different OS to see what to use. My goal is to use these as UNIX machines, mostly as extra terminals on my LAN. Presently I've got 7.5.3 running on the 540c and OS 8 on the 3400c. My 7.6 disk won't load on the 540c so I don't know what to do about getting 7.6.1 running on that machine, the disk is for the 3400. OS 8.5 won't load on the 540c (even though it could probably run it) because it does some check right after booting and says it won't work on this machine. It probably doesn't matter because I tried to install 8.5 twice on my 3400 but it crashed in the same spot not being able to read a certain file. I suppose the disk is scratched beyond use. If possible I'll run 8.6 on the 3400 and 7.6.1 on the 540 based on the recommendations I've received here and on other Apple forums.

Thanks to the forum hosters and mods for providing this forum!

My 'new' Quadra 700/IIvx frankenmac now has 7.6 installed on it's hard drive. I had to leave out some bits that required a PPC processor, but hopefully I'll be able to add those later if I ever get my 601 PDS card to work.

My IIci runs happily on 7.5.3 as I was not able to find the german upgrade to 7.5.5 up to now. I'll do another search on the apple servers these days when my Classic and Classic II will be staying with me. They are at a friends house until early april.

Hi! I think I stumble on the D-7.5.5 updater, while looking for something. http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/German/Macintosh/System/System_7.5_Update_2.0/

The ones that are running 7.6.1 at the moment:

-pb 1400c/166 with NUpowr 183 Mhz upgrade and 48 MB ram.

-pb 1400c/166, 40 MB ram.

-7500/100 with Sonnet 366 Mhz G3, 352 MB ram. Have extra ram for it and will install it shortly.

-7200/90 with  256 KB  L2 from the 7500  and  256 MB ram. This is a real beaty! I got it in original package this winter. It's in a brand new state with shining white plastics, not a speck of dust inside. Hoping to upgrade it with a Sonnet's 400 Mhz cpu. A month ago or so Sonnet was selling the card with 512 KB L2 for USD 28 something, and with 1 MB L2 for 48 or so. But only to US addresses! The rest of us would need to buy those through local dealers for around USD 100.

My LCII has 7.5.3.

I sometimes use it on my pb1400c but I don;t think it is installed at the moment.

I have 7.0* on my main Plus. I'd have run 6.0.8, but there is only one browser for 6 -- Samba -- and it is not usable. 7.0* is the lightest OS that will get the job done, so that's what's there. My coworkers think I'm nuts (they're correct), but they also love surfing with it ("Hey, it's really on the Net!").
