Software / OSX Appleshare
November 12, 2024, 11:40 |
If I still had a NAS this would be no problem. I'm looking for a way to run a somewhat modern system (Macbook Pro with 10.13 on it) with server software that has Appleshare. Have we ever figured out how to do this? Or am I going to have to find a workaround? I also have an older Windows XP machine that I could use to put some kind of Appleshare server software on it. |

My account is active and it works like a charm. No hiccups at all. Just what I needed. |

I didn't realize there was a Macintosh Garden hosting thing. That'll definitely suffice for my needs. I sent an email so it'll probably be up and running soon. Yeah and it's good to be back and browsing. I tried logging in a week or so ago and the forum wouldn't take my user/pass for some reason. Hmm. Seems to have cleared up though. I haven't been as active on my Mac systems lately but I still tinker from time to time, as you can no doubt tell by this very thread. |

Feedback & Ideas / File sharing from System 7
March 29, 2023, 09:24 |
Often I have files that I need to get onto a modern computer, or I need to send it to a friend, etc. There is an incompatibility between older and newer systems (serial vs usb, cant burn cds etc) so I wish there were an equivalent of a filesharing website for System 7 machines. Is there such a thing? |

Off Topic Discussion / Re: Anyone use DOS machines?
March 31, 2022, 06:56 |
I've been hacking the hell out of these systems for the past 3 days, both hardware and software. Had to solder in new batteries for the motherboards, refurbish all the floppy drives with IPA and white lithium grease, edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat files, etc. Almost done with all of it, just waiting on a CD caddy so I can actually use the CDROM. Is an Atari this hard to set up?

Off Topic Discussion / Anyone use DOS machines?

Blasphemy to discuss DOS on a System 7 forum, I know, but I can't forget using it in the old days. I just got a couple old systems working again. Setting one up is a real pain compared to a Mac, but once it's done, it's very solid. Looking forward to rediscovering all I've forgotten. Now all I have to do is finally, finally get an Atari machine. I want to try Notator Logic. |

If that's the case, I wonder why I'm getting so many dropped frames. Hmm. |

I've been tinkering around with videos lately. It'd be nice to watch videos in full screen on my 350 9600, but I don't think it's going to happen. When I play back a standard 352x240 MPEG1 file, it looks completely fine with no frames dropped, but ONLY when the video is the size it should be. When I try to enlarge the video on my screen, it starts to skip and drop frames. I wonder how fast of a machine I would need to watch videos on. Back in the late 90s or so I remember playing MPEG1 videos on my computer in full screen without a single frame dropped and I'm sure they were of the 352x240 variety. The catch is that this was on a CPU that was definitely newer than my 350mhz from my 9600 and IIRC, it was about a 333mhz, probably a Pentium 2 or something running Windows 98. Now that I think of it, I don't even know any software for System 7 that can do *actual* full screen video instead of having a GUI box around it. |

I tried the OS8.6 memory panel and it crashes my system. |

I have 768MB of ram, which definitely slows it down. I have to wait an additional 2 minutes for it to boot up. I also remember the command+option keys when starting the memory control panel, but that was for OS8-OS9. I'm running 7.6.1. I can try switching the memory control panels, just hope it won't mess anything up. |

Operating System / Disabling startup memory test

I have a 7.x version of the memory control panel. It doesn't have the option to disable the startup memory test like later versions have. How can I disable it? Or can I just replace that control panel with some newer version and have that work? |

Operating System / Making software 'full screen'?
January 10, 2022, 08:46 |
There's a way to do this on modern operating systems but I don't know how to (or if you can) do it on System 7. I'd like to make certain software full screen so that all of my attention is on that software instead of being tempted to click through a hard drive or folder. Is there a way to do this? |

Software / Re: Accessing Wikipedia

See what fogwraith has to say. Having a copy of wikipedia on my System 7 machine is probably my number one wish, seeing as wikipedia is my most-used website. |

Yeah, that offline version of wikipedia on System 7 would be just incredible. Some issues I foresee are 1) converting/displaying images (some are svg format I think) and 2) size. Storing the entire wikipedia offline would be 150GB (about 50GB without images). Some of us have network attached servers that could store that and serve up the pages, but most probably don't have either a NAS or a SCSI hard drive that can hold that much info. Hmm... I think offline would be infinitely better than having to connect to the net, but it seems like it would be much easier for programmers to whip up a web version. |
