Blasphemy to discuss DOS on a System 7 forum, I know, but I can't forget using it in the old days.

I just got a couple old systems working again. Setting one up is a real pain compared to a Mac, but once it's done, it's very solid. Looking forward to rediscovering all I've forgotten.

Now all I have to do is finally, finally get an Atari machine. I want to try Notator Logic.

We had a 486DX4 100mhz home when I was a kid that ran DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. DOSbox is enought for me now. Don't really have the time to endless fiddle with IRQ addresses and other terrible stuff ;)

I have a Virtual PC instance on my Mac running DOS 6.x, does that count too? Usually just for some nostalgic firing up of late 80's DOS games that never made it to the Mac (e.g. Stunts) which we used to play. I just never found I could get much use out of DOS, despite still remembering a lot of the commands :D

I have a ThinkPad 760ELD, which is technically a Windows 95 machine, but works well as a DOS machine as well. I just need to figure out the storage situation for it.

Once I can do that, I look forward to using it alongside my PowerBook 1400, as they are about the same age. I still have to install Linux or BSD on the ThinkPad as well. :D

I run MS-DOS 5.x and 6 under SoftPC 68k regularly. I got tons and tons of DOS programs (some of which I wrote myself) from my decade+ as a systems and application programmer. So why not use that, too?

PS: Fiddling around with IRQ settings and I/O addresses all night long makes a man outta you - just in case your girl friend couldn't get that job done. ;)

I mean, my manlihood isn't necessarily an issue because I myself am a lady, but I can guarantee my girlfriend would be right alongside me trying to troubleshoot IRQ and I/O address issues. ;)

Far be it from me to question anyone's (wo)manliness. But just in case the little blue (or pink) pills are in short supply, a night of DOS config tweaking will give your ego a boost that'll make your loins storm all the gates of heaven. :D

I've been hacking the hell out of these systems for the past 3 days, both hardware and software. Had to solder in new batteries for the motherboards, refurbish all the floppy drives with IPA and white lithium grease, edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat files, etc. Almost done with all of it, just waiting on a CD caddy so I can actually use the CDROM.

Is an Atari this hard to set up? :P

@Syntho - Depends on the Atari ;)

Most of the early non-DOS systems (with the noteable exception of the Amiga) where "run-out-of-the-box" machines.
Meaning the Firmware contained the BIOS and the Operating System as well. You turned it on and the system ran. Floppy and tape drives where then only used for application binaries and data storage. Most games were delivered as cartridges, both for cost and copy protection reasons.

Yes, there was a time when Floppy Disks were a precious resource in many parts of the world.  :O

Just to get back to topic ;-)

What's the DOS version recommended to use (emulate) in terms of compatibility and reliability? I remember from back in the day that when DOS 6.0 came out there was this uproar because it tended to corrupt people's files?

Any "general purpose" recommedation?
