Often I have files that I need to get onto a modern computer, or I need to send it to a friend, etc. There is an incompatibility between older and newer systems (serial vs usb, cant burn cds etc) so I wish there were an equivalent of a filesharing website for System 7 machines. Is there such a thing? |

The first thing that comes to mind is using FTP to transfer files to the server and then grab them from there using your older systems. There are clients for both the most modern OSes as well as System 7. You could get your personal hosting for free at the Mac Garden Hosting service. (link retro compatible) It is a reliable service, run by @fogwraith here. Of course, you may want to add a personal little website too :-) Is that what you were looking for? P.S. Good to have you back here again, Syntho. It's been a while :-)

For most vintage systems there are by now USB solutions in place. And for smaller files you could even try e-mail. Otherwise you got to put your trust into the Garden's hosting service or any other public site allowing for plain FTP.

I didn't realize there was a Macintosh Garden hosting thing. That'll definitely suffice for my needs. I sent an email so it'll probably be up and running soon. Yeah and it's good to be back and browsing. I tried logging in a week or so ago and the forum wouldn't take my user/pass for some reason. Hmm. Seems to have cleared up though. I haven't been as active on my Mac systems lately but I still tinker from time to time, as you can no doubt tell by this very thread.

WebDAV was made available on Mac OS 8 via an open-sourced software called Goliath, but only coded for PPC Macs (as a side note, a 68k version of Goliath was worked on using its source code, but the developer had a disk crash and lost it) but he knew it worked on 68k because he did get it working! Here's the MG link for it and it works with available WebDAV services:Goliath - http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/goliath-101 Developer site - http://www.webdav.org/goliath/

My account is active and it works like a charm. No hiccups at all. Just what I needed.
