1 Hardware / Compact flash pb 1400

Someone mentioned a driver for boot use.. or a lack of driver... the driver is installed when the CF card is initialized, just like it is if you initialize a new HD..

Some things to keep in mind when using CF cards:

There are different speed ratings for the cards.. 2X, 4X and so on.. pick the fastest cards you can get your hands on if you want to use it as a boot drive.. If you cheap out, you'll get exactly what you pay for.
The cheap ones you'll find on ebay are slower than the HD that came in the 1400 way back when..

The eariler comments about the read / write cycle and lifetime are true.. but the higher speed cards usually have a longer life cycle.. again, you get what you pay for.

Compared to the power requirments of a HD, a CF card should greatly increase your battery life.. On one of my 1400's, the battery life doubled.. from almost two hours to a bit over four hours.. that's without having a HD installed..

I'm not sure if there is a limit on CF card size in a 1400 under System 7.. a one gig card works just fine under 7.6.. maybe someone else has used something larger and can comment further..

CF / PCMCIA readers are available in the camera section at Best Buy, and should be available at any camera shop.. if it costs more than $15.00 from a retailer, you're paying too much.. you should be able to track one down on ebay for a few bucks less, shipping included.

In all honesty, if you can come up with a decent 10+ gig HD and max out your RAM (64mb), you'll get much better performance, and a slight increase in battery life (newer drives are a lot faster, and more energy efficient)

Best of luck with your project!

Thanks for the browser info.. I'll keep that in mind once I get to that point.
3 Hardware / A strange wireless fix.??

I keep fighting with wireless driver issues on my 1400cs.. but I think I've found a way to get around all of that..

Have you ever seen those wireless gaming adapters for the Playstation 2 / xBox / Wii? they are nothing more than wireless bridge boxes that are configured through your web browser, the same as your wireless router..

Now, I can't verify that this will work, yet,  but by my way of thinking, I don't see a reason why one of these units wouldn't work with ANY ethernet enabled device, including an old Mac.

They do not require any drivers, and are not OS dependent.. As long as the computer has an ethernet connection, and a browser to configure the unit, then it should provide a connection to your wireless network.

If anyone here has a wireless gaming adapter, how about trying it out on your Mac to see if I'm loosing my mind or not.. I'm pretty sure it will work..

Thanks!

The reason for IE 5.1.7  is that it actually renders pages correctly, including most style sheets.. but if it's not available under S7, then by all means, I'd use Netscape 4.8.. Lower versions of IE are junk, IMHO..

I'll worry with the browser stuff after I figure out the wireless situation.. without connectivity, a browser selection is pointless.

My main objective now is finding a way to use my IBM / Lucent wireless card under S7.. I've read many articles that say I will need to find a 'real' gold or silver card, but I'm not willing to give up that easily.. I have plenty of time on my hands, and nothing budgeted for this project, so if there's a way to use what i already have on hand, I'll find it ;)

Keep in mind that unless you have plenty of ram installed, you'll have to leave some space on the CF card for VM.. CF cards are cheap these days.. I picked up a pair of 1gig Lexar cards for $14.00 each a few months ago from Office Depot.. I haven tried using one for an OS install yet, but have used a 64mb card for dedicated VM for a couple of years.. After upgrading the HD to a faster / larger model, the CF card actually slowed the book down, so it's using the HD for everything now..  If you use a gig card or larger, you should be able to remove the HD all together and double your battery life..  Best of luck with your project!!  ................... 6 Hardware / Help! Installing WaveLAN card in PB1400

Hmmm.. If the card shows up on the desktop, then I'd say that the PCMCIA cage is working.. and since the card worked on the PC, you're in good shape there as well.. My question would be, why are you using AppleTalk? Are you connecting to an AppleTalk network? If not, then maybe that's the problem..

Now, I'm not running System 7 myself.. I'm running OS 8.6 on my PB 1400, and use the Orinoco 7 driver with my IBM card (it configures as a Gold card)
so maybe I'm not experiencing the same situation as yours.. Is AppleTalk a requirment under S7 for connecting to an open WiFi network?

On my setup, I go into the TCP/IP control panel and choose the Orinoco driver.. then use the Orinoco CP to choose the access point that I want to connect to.. simple as that..

So, not knowing what is required under S7, my opinions may be completely off base.. but it's something to try, just in case.... best of luck with your project ;)

My name is Tommy, and I'm an addict..

My current toys include a Powerbook 1400cs and a 2nd generation slot load iMac.. the 'book is running OS8.6 while the iMac is running OS X 10.2

I'd like to run S7 on the book, and plan on doing a lot of reading here to make it happen.. I have a feeling that returning the book to it's factory setup will kill my IBM / Lucent wireless card, and I'll have to figure out how to run Internet Explorer 5.1.7 like I do under OS 8.6, but it's a project that I'd like to complete, even if it costs me the rest of my hair..

All The Best!! ................  Tommy
