My name is Tommy, and I'm an addict.. My current toys include a Powerbook 1400cs and a 2nd generation slot load iMac.. the 'book is running OS8.6 while the iMac is running OS X 10.2 I'd like to run S7 on the book, and plan on doing a lot of reading here to make it happen.. I have a feeling that returning the book to it's factory setup will kill my IBM / Lucent wireless card, and I'll have to figure out how to run Internet Explorer 5.1.7 like I do under OS 8.6, but it's a project that I'd like to complete, even if it costs me the rest of my hair.. All The Best!! ................ Tommy |

Well IE 5.0.2 runs fine on System 7, but you might enjoy Netscape 4.8 a lot more. It's the official recommended browser of System 7 Today, and is super fast and stable. Opera and iCab are also fine choices. Internet Explorer would be my last choice.

Thanks! The reason for IE 5.1.7 is that it actually renders pages correctly, including most style sheets.. but if it's not available under S7, then by all means, I'd use Netscape 4.8.. Lower versions of IE are junk, IMHO.. I'll worry with the browser stuff after I figure out the wireless situation.. without connectivity, a browser selection is pointless. My main objective now is finding a way to use my IBM / Lucent wireless card under S7.. I've read many articles that say I will need to find a 'real' gold or silver card, but I'm not willing to give up that easily.. I have plenty of time on my hands, and nothing budgeted for this project, so if there's a way to use what i already have on hand, I'll find it

Quote from: "Studio1031" The reason for IE 5.1.7 is that it actually renders pages correctly, including most style sheets.. but if it's not available under S7, then by all means, I'd use Netscape 4.8. Well, after using System 7 for years in the "modern" era of OS X, I have (with the help of others) come up with what is probably the best all around browsing solution for older Macs running System 7. The first problem is waiting around for old Macs to render CSS is far too time consuming when a majority of the time you just want to access information. So we recommend that CSS is turned off on System 7 browsers. It greatly speeds up rendering time, displays all the information in a readable way, and some may argue it gives pages a more "nostalgic" look. The second is that Internet Explorer is very slow, and on top of it, the only way to run Internet Explorer 5.1.7 on Mac OS 7 is to install evil Appearance Manager, which defies some of the benefit of running Mac OS 7 in the first place - all to have a slow browser slowly try to render CSS on a slow computer. Netscape 4.8 is much faster than IE, runs in Mac OS 7 without the need for EVIL system hacks such as Appearance Manager, and most people also find it most stable. Netscape 4.8 also has a convenient email client and web authoring tool built in - Outlook Express 5 will not run on System 7 at all, and Outlook Express 4.x will not run with Internet Explorer 5.x installed. Again, there is also Opera 5 and iCab, both of which are still better choices than IE anything.

The first page I go with an old browser when testing it, is Ebay. Of the old ones without the AM, the IE 5.02 with css on, shows it fine. After that I check my bank account and open some other sites I visit regularly. Or try to, depending of the browser.

Again, though, turning CSS off gives quite a performance boost, and allows you to see all the information. I really suggest trying to stick with Netscape 4.8 as much as possible. IE is such a pile of crap.

Just try to ebay with NS 4.8, it does not work. Even the start page http://www.ebay.com/ is unreadable. Then do the same with IE 5.02 and everything is fine. One can actually read the page. Crap or not, but the IE actually works.

Yeah but a majority of stuff still does work in Netscape 4.8. In other words, if you're going to be shopping on eBay, I probably wouldn't be using a classic Mac. For a majority of whatever a person would actually want to do with System 7 can be accomplished quickly and stably with Netscape 4.8.
