Software / data logging stuff
August 29, 2009, 03:29 |
I always used to drool over their stuff: http://www.vernier.com/legacy/ They still have equipment and software for Apple II's. The Mac stuff also used to be used with the Newtons/eMates, along with the eProbe software. HTH, Blessed Cheesemaker |

Hardware / Laserwriter 600
January 10, 2009, 15:15 |
Quote from: "mac2geezer" After a Google search on AsanteTalk I'm only slightly better informed. Are the LocalTalk ports on the AsanteTalk box RJ11 or ?? I have what looks like a PhoneNet connector; a box with a Din 8 cable and 2 RJ11 ports, one with a terminator resister, and a long cable that looks like phone cord (RJ11 connectors). All that came with the printer. Hi, I don't want to get you started on some sort of Rube Goldberg printing "solution." If all you want to do is connect 1 printer to 1 mac, then you don't need to have any fancy set-up. All you need to do is have a single cable running from your Mac to the printer, which it sounds like you already do. If you do want a network set-up, then you will need to get extra equipment. There are some real technical differences between AppleTalk and LocalTalk, which I don't understand/can't remember, and I don't think we really need to get into here. I have my LaserWriter Pro 630 set up on my network. Using a AAUI-RJ45 adaptor, I have a regular Cat5 cable going from my Laserwriter 630 to the router; this lets me print from my G4 Sawtooth (running 10.4 Tiger) as well as my S900 SuperMac that runs OS 7.6.1 (as well as 9.1). Since I don't have an ethernet card for my Mac IIsi, I just use a regular 8-pin LocalTalk cable from the Mac IIsi to the LW630. For all computers, I have to have AppleTalk turned on, so the computer sees the printer. The problem you describe with the printer sheet sounds like a known age/length of service issue with the rollers. There was recently a kit for sale on ebay for repairs such as this, these kits were readily available years ago, but of course are rare-er these days. My 630 is great. I don't use it as much now as in the past, but I can print with everything from an Apple IIGS, Newton, all the way up to my G4. And it has a Windows-style printer port, so it will be a while before I get rid of it. HTH! |

Hardware / Troubleshooting
January 09, 2009, 03:57 |
Is that an Appletalk printer? Do you need to have Appletalk turned on (and on that specific port) in order for it to work? I think as long as you have "Laserwriter" or "Laserwriter 8" selected in the chooser, and Appletalk on, it should show up. Any other specifics about what OS you are using, or anything else that might help in diagnosing? |

Operating System / You can also try these
January 03, 2009, 14:55 |
Hi, I tried Fastermac in the past, and for some reason had difficulties with their setup. True to their word (at least at the time), I had 7 days to cancel, and they honored that (good on them!). I have always thought about trying the Frys.com ISP. They are cheap, and from their description, OS-agnostic. Good luck! |

Software / Kaleidescope

Quote from: "dpaanlka" Buggy and slow - and most of the themes look pretty childish. My experiences have been quite different, although I have run it in OS 8.6 and 9.1...I haven't yet put it on my 7.6.1 machine, but hey, it's the weekend now. I have found it to work quite well across a number of machines an OS's...I always just use the BeOS theme, since a) I like that, and b) the other themes are childish and/or ugly. |

Development / Re: Best c++ compiler for system 7
July 13, 2007, 14:35 |
Quote from: "crazymac" Hello There, Interesting question...Dan is probably correct, here is some history. All through the 680x0 era, Symantec Think C (they bought out Lightspeed C) was *the* compiler. At the time that PowerMac's were introduced, Metrowerks was just starting up, and delivered a PowerPC compiler way ahead of Symantec. Most developers as a consequence went with Metrowerks CodeWarrior, and Symantec delivered one version of a PPC optimized compiler, and then let it die. I have used the Codewarrior 9, 10, and 11 with OS 7.5.3...no reason it shouldn't work with OS 7.6.1. Around that time, Metrowerks started releasing "CodeWarrior Pro" and started renumbering from the beginning (1, 2, 3, etc.). My version of CodeWarrior Pro 7 supposedly requires min. OS 8.6 . HTH...let me know if you need any more specific info. I can dig up my CD's and test it out on OS 7.6.1 (Metrowerks installs an extension, MetroNub, that is part of the debugger; of course that needs to be updated for the system so it doesn't crash it...) |

Operating System / Out of the box, 7.6.1 is better
July 12, 2007, 03:56 |
I have 7.6.1 and 7.5.5 installed on separate partitions on my LC 575. I had to transfer files from my Umax Supermac clone running OS 9.1 to my little LC 575. I was in System 7.5.5 and hooked up the ethernet cable, switched AppleTalk over, clicked on MacTCP, adjusted the settings, and...nothing. No joy. Rebooted, still no joy. Finally, switched start up disks to 7.6.1, adjusted my settings, changed the TCP/IP settings and immediately found the Supermac, transeferring my files. I've done this before with OS 7.5.5, and earlier, but who needs the hassle. Out of the box, 7.6.1 has much more in common with the modern Mac OS's than 7.5.5 and earlier. (I actually prefer running System 7.1 if I want an earlier System 7, but that is another thread). |

Hardware / PRAM Batteries
July 12, 2007, 03:43 |
That is interesting; I swear I have no problem with PM 6500 with dead PRAM batteries, but the theory of the in-between voltages could be true. By the way, I get the PRAM batteries at OWC ... the last time I went to Radio Shack in 2002, they wanted 13.99 for one! OWC has the 6500 style for ? 5.99 and the 7x00, 8x00 and 9x00 style for 4.99 each. I don't mean to be an advert for them, but they have the best price I've seen. |

Off Topic Discussion / Re: Greetings!

Quote from: "bd1308" I'm also beginning to get back INTO Apple IIgs hardware again. How traumatic! Anyway, there seem to be a lot of Apple IIgs's on eBay right now. I haven't checked on the status of the ether card lately, but I have the CF card installed in my Apple IIGS, and man, that thing works great. The only problem I have is, I don't have room for all my Mac & Apple treasures (or, "Mac crap" as my wife "fondly" refers to it. If only my house had a basement...). Anyway, sorry about the 9600, as well. It looks like you have plenty of other fine Macs, but those PCI towers are still great computers (and hard to find now on eBay). |

Classifieds / That is cool, and so is this:
June 03, 2007, 05:18 |
I had a 7600 and was very pleased with it...it was nice having the A/V slots. I kept it until I had quirky problems with the drives, I suspected a motherboard SCSI problem. This would be my current vote for favorite auction: Umax SuperMac I have two at home. This computer looks fairly bare. But, with 6 PCI slots (you have to put up with some quirks), plenty of room inside, and a standard ATX case (and power supply, which I have already replaced), these are great machines, especially if you already have all the parts, a G3 processor, and some RAM. These came standard with a TwinTurbo video card, great for 2d video, by the way. System 7.6 would run great on this... I hope I got the BBCode right... |

Operating System / Re: Living in sin with 7.5.3
June 02, 2007, 14:36 |
Quote from: "JoAT" OK, I'm in the process of resurecting a Powerbook 1400 system. I was able to score 2 systems out of a warehouse bin of freebies. JoAT Where is this warehouse, by the way? FYI, I had a 1400cs and I loved the computer, but the battery life with it was always "not great." And the NiMH batteries were ok, but they seemed to rapidly deteriorate, at least compared to the LiON batteries. I guess my advice would be to only buy a battery if you had to be mobile with it, as the $ to performance ratio isn't that great. Ymmv, of course. They are *wonderful* 'books, however. |

Operating System / HFS+ in Mac OS 7.6.1

I never thought of that (i.e., disk images). How would I do this? Use disk copy and create the images, I suppose...do I lose them when I shut down, or restart? Thanks, Chas |

News & Announcements / Congrats!
June 02, 2007, 14:24 |
Hi, I wandered back to this site yesterday for the first time in a couple of months, and I could not believe the good news. I have been very concerned about Info-Mac, and the archives, for some time now. I have recently been taking my old Macs out for a spin, so to speak, and I have been having increasing difficulty finding resources for both PPC and 68k Macs, especial with early System 7 (and, for 68k Macs, anything System 6 or earlier). It would be a tragedy to lose all these old resources (for example, I use the Dvorak keyboard layout, and there are utilities for this for System 6, but I am not finding them now). I know people will say, "But why not use the latest and greatest," and "Nobody cares about 68k Macs now," but there does seem to be a community out there that wants to keep using these wonderful machines, and we will probably need to join together to preserve the old resources. Again, congrats! This site, System 7 Today, has been a wonderful resource! |
