1 Hardware / G3 Kanga 7.6.0 and 7.6.1 Solution Thread
October 25, 2013, 18:49
hm.. hadn't touched it for a while, but like all my old projects- it's still on the table...

Am just in the middle of whittling down most of my "collection" of systems, So I might be giving this another go again soon.
2 Hardware / PCI gigabit Ethernet cards....
August 10, 2012, 02:36
Any Realtek RTL8169-based card will work wonderfully to get gigabit in 7.x:

There's even official drivers for mac-- search for:
RTL8169xV111.sit

is the latest driver package for it.
Cards are <15$ anywhere from Newegg to eBay as it was a popular low-cost card in the pc world.
3 Hardware / G3 Kanga 7.6.0 and 7.6.1 Solution Thread

on the topic of legality, go ahead and pull my links- it's not really current as to my recent research, and I intend to rebuild the install to operate using the stock 7.6/1 install cd if possible

the image i have linked is actually using the install sets from my old service source disks floppy archives, but a better option would be to factor out the differences between the 3400c install cd and the retail disks.
4 Hardware / G3 Kanga 7.6.0 and 7.6.1 Solution Thread
December 28, 2009, 18:22
I'm still working on the "solution"
there's some strange shenanigans going on:

system 7.6.0 pb3400 install:
System version identifies as 7.5.3 NOT 7.6.0

system 7.6.1 pb3400 upgrade:
System version identifies as 7.6.1

a 7.6.1 pb3400 install crashes on shlib using 7.6.0 system, 7.6.1 system, or 3400c 7.6.1 system, but NOT 3400c 7.5.3 (7.6.0?) system!

Of course this is very strange...
The data fork in the 7.6.1 System file is NOT the culprit- I was mistaken...
first off, the 7.6.1 system file is hard-modified using the resources in the 3400-specific tome, but this still causes problems on a kanga.

however, if one archives the 7.5.3 system out of the working 7.6.0 install, and uses it in a 3400-upgraded 7.6.1 system, 7.6.1 + shared libraries seem to work!?!

this of course brings up the key issue which is that system is the interface between all apps and the hardware, so this might be ok to run a legacy install of, as finder, extensions, etc are all updated to the 7.6.1 build.

I'm going to attempt to track down what offending code resources might be hindering the use of 7.6.0/7.6.1, at this point, if it comes down to a single set of code, it should be portable over into the modified 7.6.1 3400c system resources pack/file- system is pretty malleable overall.

Glad to see you had some success with it, but I agree, until I work out the kinks, a later os is better suited.
5 Software / Word 5.1a and 7.6.1
November 16, 2009, 18:04
Another issue to watch for- Word 5.1a also pretty much fails at supporting large volume sizes- From memory, the root of the problem is in the assumption that a volume would never be any larger than 2GB. drives with free space exceeding this are often seen as negative sizes and prevent saving. a quick and dirty fix is to make a r/w disk image to contain word files when you are saving them, and then move them somewhere else.

This particularly comes into play with my 9500 with large sata drives in system 7.6.1, but also is a common problem on post-7 machines that shipped with larger drives.
6 Operating System / Snow Leopard sharing to Classic Mac OS
November 16, 2009, 17:56
for reference, the 10.6.2 update doesn't affect classic appleshare at all- the patch they're referring to had to do with the fact that afptcp volumes have a id attached to them - as it was, apple for some reason restricted the supported id numbers with the release of 10.6.0 to a fixed set that only supported apple official servers. Novell, for example, made a patch to work around this in their AFPTCP.NLM for traditional netware, but there's no support for classic file serving at all in 10.6.x as it stands, and I don't expect for any to be added.

As suggested, I'd look to the netatalk project for a possible solution, or jsut stick to connecting TO your sys7 mac from within 10.6.0

This affects ALL versions of classic MacOS, btw, not just 7.x!
7 Operating System / Playing Video CDs (VCD) on Mac OS 7.6.1
November 16, 2009, 17:52
I'll have to look through my archives, but the vcd dat is usually a bit... messy to work with directly in quicktime...

You're going to want a proper vcd player app- I do remember having success with a couple apps about 10-11 years back. The one thign to watch out for ALWAYS is the "converting from an unknown format" message.. that's maclink saying it's reading the file in as plain text and doing whatever with it.. in the case of quicktime, it's making a movie with a text track with the contents of the file read as just plain text... if renaming the file to .mpg doesn't work you're going to need a real vcd player app.

9 Hardware / G3 Kanga 7.6.0 and 7.6.1 Solution Thread
November 16, 2009, 17:41
As some may have noticed, heard, whatever, a few months back I tracked down a Kanga with the express purpose of making 7.6 work hell or high water.

I've had a working solution to get 7.6.0 (as the 3400c runs it) on the system for a few months now, and am still tinkering with 7.6.1.

Instructions and notes for version 0.1:

First off, you'll need my install cd image:
http://www.eastrain.com/mac/powerbook_3500_7.6.1_v0.1.toast
(74MB Toast 4.2 image, but any ISO capable cd burner app should work as well)

This install disc can be run on the G3 directly, but a few things to note:

7.6.1 has major shared library issues and WILL NOT boot if shared libraries are enabled. (I am currently working on this problem, but expect it to be solvable)

Because 7.6.0 is more stable, if you want to install this only, run the Netinstall for 7.6.0, and then manually put the provided G3 Enabler into your new system folder.

I have found that if you are running system 8 or later as well on your system, you may need to reboot with extensions disabled on your first return to 8.1 or the system will hang or error. This could just be me, or my dead PRAM battery, but should not prevent anyone from using a mixed-os system.

I don't guarantee this won't blow up your laptop, destroy data on it, etc, but it works fine for me- take that as you will.

I'd like to hear from testers- My next version will be a bit more straightforward and should function as an multipurpose install cd for 2400c, 3400c, and G3 based on the 3400c's official restore disc, so this is FAR from complete, but should be considered a mostly functional proof of concept.
10 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?
November 13, 2009, 23:35
Figured you'd ask- I actually need to finish up a blog entry detailing it and with copies of the customized install set- basically I expanded the existing pb 3400c system enabler to re-support 2400 (for which it was initially intended), and add the 3500 as well.

1) Boot the system from a modified 3400c install cd with wish i were's extension installed into the cd's system folder and with prefs set to cloak gestalt as a 3400c.

2) Install 7.6.0 as if it were a 3400c (this requires the specific 3400 install disc as a retail 7.6.0 disc doesn't have the basic drivers injected into the system file to support the hardware- the 3400c installer also MUST think it's on a 3400c or the support for the 3400 hardware- and 3500 as it's identical, won't be installed, resulting in more non-bootability.)

3) Copy the new enabler to the system folder on hdd (this is also on the cd in a tools folder)

4) Reboot off HDD - you should have 7.6.0 running and stable.

Now the problem is 7.6.1, there's a conflict with CFM 68k .. in 7.6.1 at least some bit of core code that supports it is inside the data fork to the system file (aka PPC code) ... if you remove cfm 68k altogether, it's stable, but most apps won't run- I've tried EVERY version fo the CFM extensions, and have found that the problem is with the code in the system file.

A half-ass solution was to create a hybrid system file with the data fork from 7.6.0 and the resources (aka drivers, etc) from 7.6.1- this seems stable, but a few things seem to be buggy, and I still need to see if a more legitimate solution can be found- It's going to require a modification to the system file at least to get it going, but I should be able to minimize the 7.6.0 chunks to jsut support cfm.. or so I hope...

I don't consider the installer disc complete yet, but it does provide a completely stable 7.6.0 environment via a direct install (no additional computers, scsi link,  or pulling the drive).

If anyone out there knows a way to create apple installer tomes, I need major help with that! TomeViewer has let me pull out the files and I've got them modifed as needed to provide a simple single boot method, but without any way to reinject them, It won't be possible to make the disc "proper" .. it IS working as it stands however. I'll go into more detail once I finish writing this all up.

Oh, and the config has been tested in:
7300

Reviving an old topic in hopes of finding anyone with a solution...
I've had a set of the wired mediapress/wired4dvd cards sitting around for a while waiting for me to finish equipping out a system 7.6.1 pci mac again...
Wired4DVD acts odd:

Using a 9500

the card works fine in system 8.0->9.2.2

in system 7.6.1 the card appears to work fine, brings up the display window, etc, BUT the green overlay layer is not present in the window.
switching to fullscreen crashes the application
auto-configuring the overlay layer crashes the application
all other configuration options operate fine, even the border threshold selector (for configuring the overlay color's threshold), and the alignment/stretching setting (that actually shows the dvd playing)
if i match the color to the threshold's settings and draw a box in that color on the screen, i can view the video inside it, like normal zoomed video support

all the controls work fine, and the dvd plays back fine...
pcm and mac audio outputs are fine, as is video routed to the svideo output jack on the back of the wired card...

It's got me baffled as to what is THAT different between 7.6.1 and 8.x's video drivers, I'd love to get this running officially in system 7...

I've tried the following video cards (and drivers to match)
TwinTurbo Apple OEM short card
TwinTurbo Apple OEM long card
ATI Rage 3d Pro? card
ATI Rage 128 Apple OEM card
ATI Radeon Retail PCI card
Voodoo3 2000 PCI
Voodoo3 3000 PCI

all with the same issues- I had read somewhere that an ati card was required, but this seems to make NO difference whatsoever...

Ideas guys?
I'd love to give the Cool DVD card a shot, but it's been years since I saw one for sale.. wired cards are still sold off their website en masse for cheap...
14 Hardware / External HDs

My suggestion would be to actually upgrade the internal, given that IDE drives are dirt cheap these days, and they'll be quieter and more reliable than the scsi drives from that era.

I found that removing all vram simms on the 7300 seems to make it ignore onboard altogether
