1 Hardware / Your most current Mac
March 31, 2010, 14:48
After my iBook G4/800 died my latest Mac is an iMac G3/233 happily running OS X 10.3.9.

Still my main Macintosh computer is an 8600/G3/400 running Mac OS 9.1.
2 Off Topic Discussion / Every Mac you own working or not.

Ok, back after a long time. ;-)

I have those Macs - working if not indicated else:

iBook G4/800, 640 megs of ram, 10.3.9, not working more than about a quarter of an hour if at all, probably due to the logic board thing.
Macintosh Server G3/300, 256 megs of ram, OS 9.1, ASIP 6.3 soon to come.
Power Macintosh G3/266, stripped down as not doing anything at all.
iMac G3/233, 288 megs of ram, OS 9.1.
Power Macintosh 9600, 160 megs of ram, 9.0 with Apple Share IP 6.3 for testing purposes before installing ASIP to the Macintosh Server. After that system 7 will come!
Power Macintosh 8600 with G3/400, 512 megs of ram, 9.1. My main Macintosh computer.
Performa 5200, Mac OS 7.6. After updating to 7.6.1 I'll copy the system to the 9600.
Macintosh PowerBook 5300 cs, 16 megs of ram, Mac OS 8.1, not working
Macintosh PowerBook 5300, eight megs of ram, not working
Macintosh Quadra 840 AV, 32 megs of ram, Mac OS 8.1.
Macintosh II ci, 128 megs of ram, System 7.5.3
Macintosh Classic II, ten megs of ram, System 7.1 I believe
Macintosh Classic, four megs of ram, System 7.1
Macintosh SE, four megs of ram, System 7.1
Macintosh PowerBook ??? (a 68k one), not doing anything at all.
3 Operating System / Using System 7 with large hard disks? Partition the drives.

Are you able to use the bigger partitions with System 7?

And be careful not to cut the cables doing so.

It's relativley easy on special older ones, and I don't know how robust the 1400's are.

I voted for the kitchen as I would not know what to do.

Windows peecees are sort of computers as well, so I can make do with them.
6 Off Topic Discussion / The ONE and ONLY Political Thread

Social democrats or alternatives in Germany.

The political landscape is a little bit different from the american one I think.

Lots of things are handled totally different on the other side of the pond.
7 Software / Most missed applications?

So I think we need a System 7 freak with programming skills to get a Mozilla flavoured browser.

I miss that one too.

Does anyone know a person who maybe would be ready to do so?

I know some Atari programmers who are making a browser right know but in the macintosh scene I can't think of anyone as I'm not that in it as I'm in Atari.

I already asked someone who codes on his Mac for a Mac OS 9 compatible version of Mozilla 1.4 and he told me if there does not exist one there'd certainly be reasons for that... :?
8 Hardware / PowerMacintosh 7200-Worth OS 7, or is OS 8 faster?
May 08, 2006, 16:13
Yeah - I'm waiting to access it. :)

As I finally got me a copy of 7.6 on eBay I think I will try it as well at some point in time.
9 Hardware / Mac OS 7.6.1 on Certain Power Macs

Try installing 7.6(.0) on a 4400 and see how successful you are.

The machines above will not take 7.6, only 7.6.1.

So you are just referring to Mac OS 7.6.x and not to 7.5.x when you state nothing before 7.6.1 can be installed onto those Macs. Got it. ;)

The machines listed above do not support anything less than 7.6.1.

The 4400 shipped with 7.5.

I like the idea of an all-in-one machine as much as the idea of a tower/ desktop/ whatever with monitor.

Both models have therir advantages and disadvantages.

Btw: If someone gets those six 5500/250 and there is one board too much in them I'd like to have it for my 5200 to replace the technical abomination inside it...

You can try to get a used copy of any software that runs on your machine.
13 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?
April 30, 2006, 16:52
I'm posting from the floor where I just finished laughing...

Got my 5200 finally so I know what you are talking about.

This one is running Mac OS 8.1 still due to lack of System 7.6.

I don't have a modem, I have a networking card for the machine.

Works fine so far but is painfully slow.

I'll replace the mainboard as soon as I'll find a 5400 or 6400 one.
14 Hardware / PowerMacintosh 7200-Worth OS 7, or is OS 8 faster?
April 29, 2006, 15:22
My 7200/90 was way faster with 7.5.2 than with Mac OS 9.

Just uses 9 as it made for a better server in my opinion.

I thought the speed with System 7 was tremendous compared to my 4400/160 running 9.1.

Did you try that out meanwhile?

My 4400 install cd just works on 4400s.

I think it was the same with the 7200's one...
