1 Hardware / What is the oldest Mac you use daily?
September 22, 2012, 16:15
My main computer is a PowerMac G5 (late 2005).

But for on the road I keep using my old 800 Mhz TiBook and then there is the good old PowerMac 7100/80 waiting to be turned on every now and then for a classic game or surfing around the net, trying various things :)
2 Hardware / Browser for OS 7.1
September 22, 2012, 16:13
If you can do without graphics, I highly recommend you WannaBe. It is a text only browser, but it is lightning fast compared to all the older Internet Explorer or Netscape versions. I regularly use my PowerMac 7100/80 to check different news sites and it's really fun.

3 Hardware / Browser for OS 7.1

If you intend to just read information, I recommend the text-only web browser "Wanna-Be". It is really fast compared to Netscape / Internet Explorer on my PowerMac 7100/80, especially when running it from a RAM disk. You can find it here: http://mindstory.com/wb2/
4 Off Topic Discussion / What do you do to the OS X Dock?
November 12, 2011, 18:18
Since I have been using Drag Thing  instead of the Dock for years now, I can't go back. I simply hide the dock at the bottom. Unfortunately, you can't seem to get rid of it entirely. :(
5 Hardware / Color Classic Dilemma
October 19, 2011, 15:53
Just out of curiosity: Has anyone ever tried to put a Solid State Drive into a Color Classic? The SSDs should really speed up things if you can get them to work, shouldn't they?

7 Operating System / Using a printer over network
July 22, 2011, 18:19
Mea culpa. I know, there is a perfect guide on S7T and I simply missed it when browsing through the categories. In case someone should be looking for the same thing, go to http://main.system7today.com/articles/tutorials/osxprintsharing.html

There is one problem however - whenever I want to start the Desktop Printer Utility it gives me a warning that the desktop printer extension has not been found. Shouldn't this one be included in the full installation of 7.6 ? If not, where to get it?
8 Operating System / Using a printer over network
July 18, 2011, 12:37
Having established a stable network between my PM7100 and the PowerMac G5 (running 10.4.11) I came to think of whether it would be possible to print my ClarisWorks sheets directly from the PM7100 using my HP Photosmart C3180 that is connected to the PowerMac G5 via USB. Network printing so to say.

Unfortunately I have absolutely zero experience in network printing and wondering how and if this would work? Do you have any experience? How do I need to set up my Macs?

Thanks in advance!
9 Operating System / Are you using a RAM disk?
July 17, 2011, 14:15
Forgot about this thread, sorry guys :-)

One thing I can say is that RAM disks are really a good idea for your average System 7 computer. I'm actually writing this message on my PowerMac7100/80 with 76 MB RAM using the Internet Explorer 5. (the only browser that somehow handles to display the most important sites like S7T, Mac Garden, Mac Domain etc. halfway accurate)

Anyway, the IE 5 was almost unusable on this system due to its high requirements. That is until I used rambunctious 1.5, IMO the best and fastest RAM disk tool for System 7. I copied the whole IE 5 folder over to the RAM disk and started it. Lo and behold, it speeded up the experience so much that it is actually tolerable and allows me to download good System 7 stuff without having to go through the set up a network hassle. So thumbs up for RAM disks. Everyone looking for a bit more speed on his old System 7 Mac should give rambunctious 1.5 a try. (would be my suggestion for adding in the software guide, if you agree, Dan?)
10 Operating System / Whats your Mac?

I'm using a PowerMac 7100/66..err 80 (replaced the logic board with the faster model) and OS 7.6.1. I have whoping 48 MB of RAM and I'm actually writing this using my PowerMac and Netscape 4.8 :-)
11 Software / Web Browser

Just check out the Macintosh Garden:

http://macintoshgarden.org/

I am using Office 2001 and it works fine with .doc. But you have other options as well. (I think Apple Works was also able to handle .doc files)

There even is a docx converter for OS9 out there, can't remember the name though. Few, but still some projects going on for the Classic Mac OS.
12 Software / Web Browser

Hey!

Congrats!! A Beige G3 Tower - those are nice machines.

Your browser choices vary with the operating system you are going to use. System 7 (which this forum is dedicated to) is quite limited in terms of web browsing unfortunately. (It has other strengths) Your best choice with OS 7.6 is Netscape 4.8 or iCab 2.99, although the experience is really...um.. not so exciting I would say.

If you are going with OS 8.6 or above, you may use Classilla which is still maintained and regularly updated by the one and only Cameron Kaiser (my personal hero!). I use Classilla quite a lot every day and with the exception of heavy flash & java stuff it performs very well. Take a look here: http://www.classilla.org

Sounds great. I think you should get in touch with Cameron Kaiser and talk about your plans. He has great experience in programming Classilla for OS 8.6 - 9.2.2 and TenFourFox (for 10.4 Tiger). He might give you some good advice and hints.

Classilla is (and will not be) available for System 7. At least that is what the programer, Cameron Kaiser, stated a while ago. To the best of my knowledge, there is also no open source browser in development - the closest to what you are looking for would be an old version of Netscape. I think version 4.8 is the last one that should run on System 7...
15 Operating System / Are you running Mac OS 7?
June 01, 2011, 10:56
Just freshly installed 7.6 on my PowerMac 7100/66. Now going through the important updates section here on S7T and getting the most important stuff. Runs very nicely so far ;-)
