1 New Member Welcome / First time poster!

Welcome!  I'm a bit late to reply, but that's how it goes.  It's been a few months, so how is your setup going?

I have a 6100 PowerMac that I use often (right now, actually).  It's upgraded with a Sonnet 500MHz G3, a 50GB HD, 264MB RAM, a 4MB HPV video card, and a CD burner.  I have a 6500 also heavily upgraded and is maxed out in nearly every conceivable way.  There's also an old LC and a IISi.  All have ethernet cards and all have worked great on my network.  I use DAVE on the 6100 for file sharing with my Windows PC and G5.  For wireless, I use Linksys WET54g bridges with a few of them.  They are about to be replaced by newer "n" bridges so I can use WPA encryption.

I have several other Macs, like a 7500 upgraded to a 800MHz G4, 1GB RAM, 128MB Radeon 9250, a Sonnet Tempo Trio card for USB, Firewire, an IDE HD and DVD burner.  It has OS X 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2 installed.  It's probably the one with the biggest technology leap from original specs.  However, the ones listed earlier are my oldest.

It's pretty amazing how much can still be done with  old Macs.
2 Hardware / What is the oldest Mac you use daily?

Wow, I thought my PowerMac 6100 was old, (I'm using it right now with Classilla 9.3.1).  I'm glad to hear of people using much older machines regularly.  I have an LC and a IIsi, but I hardly ever use them.  I keep them running mainly as a novelty.

This 6100 (well actually a 6116CD), has been upgraded with a 500MHz Sonnet G3 CPU, 264MB RAM, 4MB HPV video card, 50GB scsi Hard Drive, 32GB Compact Flash with IDE converter, and a nice scsi CD burner.

Some of the more heavily used software includes MS Office 2001, Photoshop 7, Classilla, and quite a few emulators & games.  It also runs Windows 98SE via Virtual PC, although I don't really need it because it's networked with my PC using DAVE.

This thing will actually run quite a few 3D games that are capable of software mode, such as Deus Ex, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, etc.  These are quite playable at decent framerates, especially UT.
3 Hardware / Sonnet Trio in 7.6.1???

You should be able to use the IDE functionality with any Mac that has a PCI slot.

Only the usb and firewire are limited by software since they require drivers to operate properly.  Obviously, the IDE has to be recognized in order for an OS to even load, so this function of the card has no software/OS limitation.  It would only be limited by the firmware of your mainboard and the card was designed to be compatible with old-world Macs.  I'm not aware of any Macs that won't recognize the card and I've tried it with several old beige models.
4 Hardware / Performa 6116 and internet

I'd like to hear how you made out with taking the 6116 online... what you ended up doing and how you liked it.

I have a Performa 6116CD (aka PowerMac 6100) that I use all the time.  It's upgraded with a 500MHz G3 (which actually runs at 480MHz in these machines btw), 264MB RAM, HPV video card, 50GB HD and a nice CD burner.  I'm actually using it right now to post this.  I don't have high-speed internet.  I have dialup modems for my old Macs, but I prefer to have them on the network and just dial through my PC.

That's good advice to get a AAUI adapter.  Even if you still use dialup like me, you would do better to connect though another computer and save the resources on your 6116.  Using a modem always seemed to slow my old Macs down.

As for the OS and browser, I recommend OS 9.1 with your setup and Classilla for the browser.  It's still being updated and is currently the best overall browser for classic OS IMO.  I've tried using older OSes on this Mac, (like 7.6, 8.1, and 8.6), but I found there were too many features I missed and not any significant improvement in performance.  So, I just stuck with OS 9.1 and besides a few minor issues, it works great.

The only issues I've noticed are: you have to use an earlier version of the Startup Disk control panel, such as 8.6 (the one in 9.1 won't work on this Mac), and sometimes the volume control in the Control Strip gets flaky, (but that's probably caused by something else such as Quicktime).
5 Hardware / Need Driver for Logitech 3-button Mouse

Hi,

Would you mind sharing those control panels?  I've tried two versions, (can't remember the version #s off hand), but the icon is a pink mouse head.  Neither control panel would recognize the mouse.

One other note about those 50GB scsi drives...
They are NOT 50-pin.  They are actually 80-pin drives with a 50-pin adapter.  So, there are two things against us 6100 users.  I was considering cutting out a portion of the plastic tray that the hard drive mounts onto, but even then, it would still not fit because of the adapter.

To Dimitris:
I'm glad you found a 500Mhz card.  I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
You should be able to find a video card on ebay without much trouble.  Most of the cards listed are of the "1MB upgradable to 2MB" variety, but you can usually find the "2MB upgradable to 4MB" ones.  I don't know if these guys ship to other countries, but BetaMacs has the 2-to-4MB HPV cards for straight up sale, no auction to mess with.  That's where I got mine.  The AV cards are also good.  They are supposed to be 32-bit rather than 64-bit like the HPV cards, but I haven't really noticed a performance difference (I have both).  Any of the three choices will give a VAST improvement over the on-board video.

I still have two of the 400Mhz Sonnet G3 upgrades so if something happens and your 500Mhz one doesn't work out, let me know.

Also, I tried a few more games on my 6100.  Believe it or not, I can play Unreal on it at a good framerate.  It even plays Deus Ex, (though the framerate drags on that one).
7 Operating System / That hard drive will NOT work in a 6100
April 09, 2010, 04:16
So I bought one of those hard drives mentioned earlier in the thread.  I could hardly wait for it to arrive... then today it did.

The drive is 1.5" high.  With the recommendation in this thread about using it in a 6100/6116CD, I thought it would be a 1" high drive.  This will NOT fit in a 6100, so I've been excited for nothing.  Thankfully the site says they have a good return policy, but I've still wasted my money on shipping to/from.  Now I still need to find a large 50-pin scsi drive.
8 Hardware / Need Driver for Logitech 3-button Mouse
April 05, 2010, 10:54
I bought a Logitech 3-button ADB mouse a couple years ago and have never been able to find drivers for it.  I can get the middle button to function as a second button using "TheMouse2B," but I want the actual Logitech drivers so I can have all 3 buttons funcion properly.

Does anyone have drivers for this?  It's the ADB 3-button MouseMan Macintosh version.

A note about my experience with customer service:
I recently contacted Logitech, but that got me nowhere.  They can't even read an email.  They asked for the model number and serial number which I already gave them in my original message and that info was even attached in the "reply" that they sent back.  Not only that, but I couldn't respond to the tech because it would say I needed that email address registered at their website (which it already was... it HAD to be in order for me to submit the message in the first place).  That was the most worthless and convoluted customer service I've ever experienced.  I understand that the mouse is very old and I didn't really expect much help anyway, but what if it was a brand new mouse?  The problems I experienced had nothing to do with which product I was seeking help about.
9 Software / A More Modern Skin for Toast 4
April 04, 2010, 06:28
I've been wanting to give Toast 4 a new face for a long time and I finally got around to it.

Here's what it looks like now.  If anyone wants it, I can share the resource file to patch your own copy.

My copy of Toast is version 4.2, but this will work with any version of Toast 4 that I've seen so far.  FYI, I made this using Photoshop 7 on my 6100 (which is also what the screenshot was taken from).  :-)

The problem is that i want to make an account on sonnet online store but it seems that they don't send items to Europe ( I am from Athens, Greece).

Those are very good suggestions, but I have another to add for you:
Try to find some RAM on ebay.  I got some sticks of 128MB 72-pin simms a couple of years ago for a VERY good price.  My 6116CD, (it's like yours or any other 6100 but it was the business model & came with the AV card), has 264MB of RAM!!!  I have virtual memory turned off and I run OS 9.1 as my primary OS with OS 8.6 on another partition.  This way I get to take advantage of some newer programs that aren't compatible with OS 7.

Also, I have the 500Mhz G3 Sonnet upgrade and it is absolutely awesome.  My 6100 is rock-solid stable and a joy to use, (I'm using it right now actually).

I also have a spare 400MHz upgrade.  I bought it for a pretty penny... and less than a week later I saw this 500MHz upgrade on ebay for less than what I paid for the 400MHz one, so I jumped on it.  I still have this 400MHz one which was only used for a few days while I was waiting for the 500MHz one to arrive.  I would be willing to part with it if you can't find a better arrangement to get one in Greece.  Just let me know.

Just to give you an idea of the power of these G3 upgrades, I can play Carmageddon, Tomb Raider I & II, Future Cop, and other games that don't require 3D accelleration at VERY good framerates.  I can also play Tomb Raider III, but the framerate is a little bit laggy on that one... playable, but laggy.  I even have Madden 2001 on here.  If you like emulators, I highly recommend getting a Gravis GamePad.  I absolutely love mine.

There is a good selection of scsi CD burners, but if you'd like to use a DVD burner, you can get a scsi to IDE bridge adaptor.  Right now, I have a beige Lite-On DVD burner in my 6100.  It fits great and looks good.  I really only use it to read DVDs full of archived software and mpg or avi movies though.  I haven't actually tried burning a DVD yet.

If you'd like to see what upgrades and peripherals you can use with your 6100, check out this website:
http://www.kan.org/6100
It hasn't been updated in a while, but it's still got a lot of great info for us 6100 users.

And finally, THANK YOU to the guy who posted the link to the 50GB scsi drives!  I've been trying unsuccessfully to get an 18GB one on ebay for years.  I'm definitely going to get one of those 50GB ones.

First off, I didn't see you mention whether or not you've tried calibrating the color with colorsync.  That can definitely make a huge difference as it controls all the hues & brightness.

Second, finding an adapter for a video card shouldn't be too difficult.  You may be able to find someone willing to give one away on a Mac site.

Finally, I'm glad to hear you got a 6100.  I really love that system.  I have a Sonnet 500Mhz G3 in mine, along with 264MB RAM and a Yamaha CD burner.  I use the AV card, though I've never really played with video capture.  In some ways, the 6100 is a better performer than my 6500 which also has a 500Mhz G3 upgrade, for the simple reason that the 6500 is limited to 128MB RAM.  You may be able to find some 128MB sticks of 72-pin simms on ebay.  I got mine real cheap.

BTW, I believe I have 2 spare sonnet upgrades for a 6100.  That would also alleviate your need for an adapter.
