Hello. I have a mac performa 6116, 72mb ram, 1.2 gb hard disk and 4x cd drive. I have installed mac os 9.0.4 and recently i found this site about system 7. I use my computer for playing old games and especially adventures like monkey island, full throttle, space quest series, last express etc. Do you think that it is better to install system 7? Which version of system 7 or mac os is better for my computer? Also some old games like King's Quest 7, monkey island 2, gabriel knight etc are a bit little slow. Why is that?

Yes!

Mac OS 7.6.1 is the final version of "System 7" and also the best for your computer.

Your computer is the lowest clocked PowerPC Macintosh ever made - 60 MHz. I don't know what your exact specs or options are, so I'll just assume no options and basic everything.

The L2 cache on these early systems was a separate chip and on yours, optional, so you may want to check that it's there because it makes a big difference. They come in various sizes up to 1 MB. Also, if you're using internal video, it is exceptionally slow and uses system memory much like modern "integrated" graphics chips from Intel and Nvidia. Getting a video card in that case would help too. You'll have to find not only a PDS or NuBus video card but also a PDS riser (and NuBus adapter if applicable) which you may or may not already have. All of this combined with the fact that you're running Mac OS 9.x, the slowest bloated version of Classic ever could explain why you feel your computer is slow.

As far as memory is concerned, 72 MB is maximum. It means you already have two 32 MB chips plus the 8 MB soldered onto the motherboard. So nothing to really do there, except downgrade from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS 7.6, which will free up a lot of that memory. With System 7 you can even run with virtual memory turned off and still have quite a bit left to play your games and do work with. That'll definitely make your computer feel faster.

A great option is one of the many G3 processor upgrades available for your Performa (which is technically a "G1" but was never marketed as such). Sonnet still manufactures 400 MHz and 500 MHz versions - the 400 MHz one is only $49, includes it's own cache rendering what I said previously about cache irrelevant.

Sonnet 400 MHz G3 Upgrade for 61xx
Sonnet 500 MHz G3 Upgrade for 61xx

Getting one of these limits you to a PDS video card, but the 8100 HPV 4MB card is an excellent option. Here's one for $19

So, to recap:
  • Downgrade to Mac OS 7.6.1
  • Turn Virtual Memory off
  • Install Sonnet G3 card
  • Install 8100 HPV or comparable video card
If you do all the above, it will literally feel like the fastest computer you've ever used. It'll be a fun project for a weekend, provide years of enjoyment, and be an interesting conversation piece in your home (in four years it will be 20 years old).

And

If you do all that Dan says:

Get a large SCSI hard drive (50 Gb)

http://afterthemac.com/product.php?id=5050

And an Ethernet transceiver - AAUI to Base10T - Ebay listings

http://computers.shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=aaui&_sacat=58058

You will never need another machine :-) - well maybe

You have couple of choices here.

1. Contact some apple dealers in Europe and see if they can get it for you.  Sonnet may be willing to deal with dealers and not individuals.

2. Ebay is your friend.  These accelerators show up on Ebay.

#1 is better if it will work as then you can get the standoff to pass video through the pds slot.

Those are very good suggestions, but I have another to add for you:
Try to find some RAM on ebay.  I got some sticks of 128MB 72-pin simms a couple of years ago for a VERY good price.  My 6116CD, (it's like yours or any other 6100 but it was the business model & came with the AV card), has 264MB of RAM!!!  I have virtual memory turned off and I run OS 9.1 as my primary OS with OS 8.6 on another partition.  This way I get to take advantage of some newer programs that aren't compatible with OS 7.

Also, I have the 500Mhz G3 Sonnet upgrade and it is absolutely awesome.  My 6100 is rock-solid stable and a joy to use, (I'm using it right now actually).

I also have a spare 400MHz upgrade.  I bought it for a pretty penny... and less than a week later I saw this 500MHz upgrade on ebay for less than what I paid for the 400MHz one, so I jumped on it.  I still have this 400MHz one which was only used for a few days while I was waiting for the 500MHz one to arrive.  I would be willing to part with it if you can't find a better arrangement to get one in Greece.  Just let me know.

Just to give you an idea of the power of these G3 upgrades, I can play Carmageddon, Tomb Raider I & II, Future Cop, and other games that don't require 3D accelleration at VERY good framerates.  I can also play Tomb Raider III, but the framerate is a little bit laggy on that one... playable, but laggy.  I even have Madden 2001 on here.  If you like emulators, I highly recommend getting a Gravis GamePad.  I absolutely love mine.

There is a good selection of scsi CD burners, but if you'd like to use a DVD burner, you can get a scsi to IDE bridge adaptor.  Right now, I have a beige Lite-On DVD burner in my 6100.  It fits great and looks good.  I really only use it to read DVDs full of archived software and mpg or avi movies though.  I haven't actually tried burning a DVD yet.

If you'd like to see what upgrades and peripherals you can use with your 6100, check out this website:
http://www.kan.org/6100
It hasn't been updated in a while, but it's still got a lot of great info for us 6100 users.

And finally, THANK YOU to the guy who posted the link to the 50GB scsi drives!  I've been trying unsuccessfully to get an 18GB one on ebay for years.  I'm definitely going to get one of those 50GB ones.

That's OK.  You have returned the favour with the  6100 link.

I put one of these drives in my 7100 with a 400 MHz Sonnet and It have about 110 Mb RAM.  It is now a graphics machine circa 1998 par excellance.  I also have a friend who upgraded some machines : 8500, 8600 put them in. The people are helpful and will reformat for older machines (IICi) using multiple partitions.

What I want to find now/ or make, is some ADB extension cables, about 6' to 8' long.

So I bought one of those hard drives mentioned earlier in the thread.  I could hardly wait for it to arrive... then today it did.

The drive is 1.5" high.  With the recommendation in this thread about using it in a 6100/6116CD, I thought it would be a 1" high drive.  This will NOT fit in a 6100, so I've been excited for nothing.  Thankfully the site says they have a good return policy, but I've still wasted my money on shipping to/from.  Now I still need to find a large 50-pin scsi drive.

Sorry about that. I was mainly looking at "SCSI". Mind you, the height was on the web page.

Give them a call, tell them what you have and drive specs. They do want to please.

Thank you excalibur for your answer. Yesterday i saw your message. I have already ordered sonnet nubus g3 at 500 Mhz from Aztek computers for $138.46 (including the price for shipping the item to Athens,Greece). They do not have in stock yet and i am still waiting for them to order it (apparently from Sonnet). I am also looking for apple 8100 hpv video card and now i am thinking seriously for upgrading my memory. I have 72 mb ram right now :).

One other note about those 50GB scsi drives...
They are NOT 50-pin.  They are actually 80-pin drives with a 50-pin adapter.  So, there are two things against us 6100 users.  I was considering cutting out a portion of the plastic tray that the hard drive mounts onto, but even then, it would still not fit because of the adapter.

To Dimitris:
I'm glad you found a 500Mhz card.  I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
You should be able to find a video card on ebay without much trouble.  Most of the cards listed are of the "1MB upgradable to 2MB" variety, but you can usually find the "2MB upgradable to 4MB" ones.  I don't know if these guys ship to other countries, but BetaMacs has the 2-to-4MB HPV cards for straight up sale, no auction to mess with.  That's where I got mine.  The AV cards are also good.  They are supposed to be 32-bit rather than 64-bit like the HPV cards, but I haven't really noticed a performance difference (I have both).  Any of the three choices will give a VAST improvement over the on-board video.

I still have two of the 400Mhz Sonnet G3 upgrades so if something happens and your 500Mhz one doesn't work out, let me know.

Also, I tried a few more games on my 6100.  Believe it or not, I can play Unreal on it at a good framerate.  It even plays Deus Ex, (though the framerate drags on that one).

Is a 360 MHz G4 card faster than an otherwise identical 500 MHz card from the same manufacturer? No. There is no AltiVec acceleration under System 7 so G4s are treated as G3s.
