Hi there!

I've acquired a Performa 6200 recently (actually from another member on here!), and I installed Mac OS 7.6.1 on it. It flies! Much faster than the 8.6.

However, now in 7.6.1 I dont have a network connection. It doesnt seem to be collecting an IP from the DHCP server and when I set a fixed IP in TCP/IP settings it doesnt ping from my other macs. It worked great on my network before and the green is light is coming on when I plug the cable in. Any ideas?

I ran that little app before installing 7.6 to check for any logic board errors but it says all is well. Any ideas on how I can start diagnosing the problem?

My only go-to next step would be to download another 7.6 version from macintosh garden and try again but it seems to running all okay with everything else, just the network. I'd like to be able to transfer files.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated! Thank you.

Richard

Welcome to the board! :)

Yes, System 7 is fast and uncluttered... hence it is why we love it so even today :-)

As for your networking problems, don't worry. I'm positive we'll get you connected :-)

Are you using MacTCP or OpenTransport to make a connection? (MacTCP doesn't support Auto DHCP, OpenTransport does)

You've checked the obvious like having the correct interface choosen in the "Connect via" drop down menu in the TCP/IP control panel?

If you change your user mode to "Advanced" (Edit --> User Mode...) and
click the "Options..." button; do you have "Load only when needed" checked?

If you do, uncheck it and reboot your Mac and see if it makes any difference.

The green light indicates a physical connection - a good start!

>when I set a fixed IP in TCP/IP settings it doesnt ping from my other macs.

What settings did you use, and can you ping your router from the 6200??

Hello :)

Thank you for the warm welcome to the forum!

Yes, System 7 is great. I have a Power Macintosh 6500/275 as well and just re-installed a fresh 9.1 onto a 4GB flash hard drive and the Performa 6200 with its clunking drive and OS 7 still boots quicker!

You were right @bolkonskij, you guys did get me connected! Thank you for all your replies.

So I went onto TCP/IP settings, I actually didnt know the advanced settings in here existed..., then I unchecked the Load only when needed and also added the Subnet mask and router IP, and after a minute, hey presto it picked up an IP from the DHCP so I'm online :)

Any recommendations on a web browser for 7, which do you think is best?

Great it worked! Did you know you can use your Performa 6200 to post on here and actually visit a whole lot other sites ?

As for browsers, please check out our Browser Central on the page which aggregates our tips on browsing on S7 as well as giving some browser recommendations :)

Wonderful news and welcome to the forum, Richard! :) here are the best-rated web browsers: http://system7today.com/otherbrowsers

I personally enjoy iCab, but many like the speed of WannaBe or the simplicity and speed along with the surprising compatibility and nostalgia of Netscape 2.0.2, who knew?

I have also used Netscape 4.0.8 with some success, but somehow it didn't make the cut at all in our S7T web browser list! Just in case anyone wants to try it, I added the link for it below ;)
