Still not configured my cards as having some software conflicts but it works.

Thank you Cballero! Once i sort out the conflicts with the cards it’ll be my perfect se/30, 7 years in the making lol for now I’m just happy it’s working again even in 16mhz form.

Polishing the internal metals and the other cosmetic tweaks has elevated the appearance. Blood, sweat and tears though. Lots of tears when it stopped working

Thanks Sebastian. Still can’t get the cards working because of some conflict. So thinking a fresh os install this weekend. It was a bit messy after years of mods and software tweaks. Plus. I saved everything to zip disk anyway. Not sure if I should start with 7.1. Get everything working then up it back to 7.5.5 as i like that version.

That is one fine looking machine. The SE/30 is my favorite Mac of all time. Mine never looked that sharp. For me System 6.0.5 was my favorite OS on the SE/30. It just seemed so fast and snappy. I think I did end up moving to 7.1. It was an outstanding machine for tweaking on. I did enough tweaking on my that there were long periods where it was such a mess that I could not get anything done on it.

Have lots of fun on that little beast, after all that is what they were made for.

Aha, yes. I'd also go for a combo System 7.1 (+ updates) along with System 6.0.8 for the ultimate retro compatibility :)

I almost want to say that System 7.1 is a fine System 7 version and it can be made to do most of what 7.5.x can do :) (possibly with the one sole exception of not being able to boot Macs that shipped with 7.5.x and higher)

Interesting and thank you all, I’m surprised most of you mention os6, I suppose it did ship with 6. i only really went with 7.5.5 before for the internet/online capabilities. I will definitely go for multiple os and include os6 when i move to the bluescsi (which i have build and is ready), i’m still on my spinny hhd at the moment. My thinking is to get a clean install with extras so probably 7.1 as a baseline which you all think is a good all rounder. Then save it as a kind off (recovery disc) to zip or floppy.

How do you go about setting up multiple boots? Is it easy

System 6 is interesting for exploring the mid to late 80's Macintosh history. This is about exploring, I can't think of any compelling reason for using System 6 over 7 for productivity reasons. It feels much more rough in a lot of things. But software that won't run on 7 will work if you run System 6 and turn off Multifinder. (= multi-tasking)

Install 7.1 + manually add these hand-picked updates. This turns your OS function-wise to 7.5, it will now even run software that requires 7.5, but it retains the smaller 7.1 footprint.

So you go ahead and create two partitions on your BlueSCSI. Install 7 on one, 6 on the other. Then install and use a utility called System Picker to reboot from one partition into the other as you wish. What it does is that it "blesses" the other System Folder prior to rebooting.

As Bolkonskij has laid out and you've picked-up on, System 7.1 will definitely be the 'Zippiest', newest version of System 7 for your B/W Mac and System 6 will fly but of course will come with a much older OS, which is a mixed blessing of old-time goodness being such a simple OS from a much simpler time in the Mac world. This will be quite a neat adventure, especially with the BlueSCSI you're going to pair it up with! :D
