I had a gmail account working with System 7 up until now. I had to enable imap access in the Gmail account as well as turn on Less Secure Apps. I finally got my 9600 running in this new place, and when I tried getting mail from Communicator, it gave me an error. Less Secure Apps was turned back off (for some weird reason...) so I turned it on. But now when I try to get mail, it tells me that there's a failure and to visit a page. When I load that page on a modern browser, it just gives troubleshooting thi ngs to try. None of that is working. Take a look: http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/08/05/Picture-2.gif |

Are you accessing your Gmail inbox directly from Communicator or via the Mac Garden SSL tunnel?

The Mac Garden method, since I don't think it even works without it.

That's what I was wondering :-) I just retrieved e-mails through the tunnel (even though from my webhost, not Gmail) and it worked fine. So the server is up and running. I'll add a gmail account this evening and check if it works!

This have happened to me a few times when Google thinks a malicious attacker have successfully logged in with my account. Turning on "Less Secure Apps" again usually solves it. There might be some issue with the geographical difference from where you usually login to your Gmail account and where the server is located. The server is based in Sweden, so if you usually login from the US, Google might get a red flag from that. Bolkonskij is probably "spared" since he lives in the EU as well. But I'll check the server either way

Still can't get in. I went into my account and clicked Yes that it was me trying to sign in from Sweden, turned off/on Less Secure Apps, made sure Imap was enabled etc and it still gives me that same error I posted in the picture above. I also tried POP but it gave me the same error. I changed my password too. Out of ideas at this point. It was working earlier this year, but after that move it's started to give issues. Guess it's because I didn't use it for so long.

My 9600 was shut down for a few months due to a move. When I booted it up I realized that the clock was off (set to the year 1956). I just tried setting the date to 2021 but it won't go past the year 2019 when I click the arrow to change the year. I set the date to 12/31/2019 and the clock to 11:59:50PM and let it run ten seconds, and what do you know, it rolled over to 2020. But as soon as I tried editing it again it would only go back to 2019. I don't remember System 7 not letting me change the date to post-2019. Is there some way to fix this? PS: I'm having trouble with my email as indicated on another thread. Do you think this has something to do with it?

Aha! Yes, a wrong date and time can lead to all sorts of strange behavior. Good news is that there is an easy way to fix! Look at the important updates for PPC 7.6.1. The last item is the 2020 patch by Glenn Anderson. Using it myself for more than a year now and it does what it should without interfering in any way. Can only recommend it, he did a great job on it.

Didn't help!? With the e-mail problem or the date & time setting? The latter should work like a bliss after you installed the extension and rebooted? And I'm "sorry to report" that I successfully connected to gmail via the SSL tunnel and retrieved my e-mails. I had to activate the "less secure apps may connect" setting at Google (wow, they manage to hide it even better every time I'm looking for it) but other than that it worked perfectly fine. If you login to your Gmail account via a modern machine, do you have the critical security incident mails about an unsecure connection attempt? If you confirm that it was you (the button within the mail), does the problem persist?

I confirmed that it was me on the emails it sent, as well as turned on Less Secure Apps, nenabled imap, and cleared that Captcha thing, as well as completely resetting Netscape's settings, and trying another email client (Mulberry). None of it worked. This is an issue on my end. Still trying to hunt down the problem.ì

Sidenote: I just merged both topics, the one about date & time settings past 2020 and the original one on the e-mail client to keep things together. ------------------------------------- Ok, one difference between our setups is that I use POP and you use IMAP. I do know that @Knezzen uses IMAP via the SSL tunnel, so it definitely works, but maybe he can chip in a few more info on that. (just pinged him ;-) ) If you tried another client and it won't work either, I'd guess that the problem lies with Google not allowing the tunnel to access your own account because they deem to know what's good for you. You gotta love modern tech giants, huh? Do you have a second gmail address that you could test with? Theoretically, if it would work you'd know it must be a setting with your original one.

I also tried the POP setting and it gave me the same error. The page it refers me to is 78754 which just says to ennable less secure apps, enable imap, check username/pw and clear the google captcha thing. I've done all of that many times over to no avail. I do have another gmail address, but the problem with that is I've got like 65,000 emails (mostly promotions) going back nearly 15 years. It'll try to download all of them ![]() Let me try adding that one and see if it'll at least work, then try to stop it once it starts downloading...=*

Alright. Another way would be to replicate my exact setup with your user details and see what happens.
