Have you tried setting up any of the three email clients recommended or tested by S7T? They are:

1. Preferred: Mulberry - https://system7today.com/mulberry

2. Low-end 1: POPMail II - https://system7today.com/popmail

3. Low-end 2: Mail Drop - https://system7today.com/mail-drop

I only advise on these since they are known to work with their email service to see if you get the same email receipt authentication error. This helps rule out specific issues with the email client you are trying to use.

And as a side note, with Gmail I have used it mostly with IMAP rather than POP3.

Which email client are you using? You need one that supports SMTP Auth to be able to send emails with your gmail account from your old Mac. Mulberry supports it, Outlook Express 4.0 supports it to name two. If you you're using a client that doesn't support SMTP Auth, you need to use Baton Mail as a middle man on your machine.

Have a look here: http://system7today.com/baton-mail

Look in your set up for your email client. Under the SMTP, sending section, there are spaces to fill in user name and password but it probably  says optional. For some email providers it is not optional. I just went through this on an new iPad. I could receive but not send. Fill in the fields.

Unless you don't want to receive email ;) hopefully between the SMTP tip and Baton Mail, you get it working. Give each a try and let us know if either tip helped fix your authentication error :)
