So I have an original 7.6 install CD and I'd like to install it onto my PB 540c. Problem is I don't have a CD-ROM for the 540c. Is there any way to make a series of floppies to install from with the CD? I know that 7.6 floppy installs exist, I just don't want to re-buy 7.6 when i already have it just to get it on floppies... Any ideas short of just springing for a SCSI CD-ROM for the 540c? |

If you have a SCSI hard drive, and some other Mac with a SCSI CD-ROM drive in it (like a desktop), you can hack together a makeshift SCSI CD-ROM drive from that.

Well I just came up with an idea... not sure it will work but here it goes... If I install 7.6 onto my PowerMac 9500 then stuff the system folder and segment it with stuffit deluxe (which I have) and transfer it over with floppies, then decompress and select as the system folder, would it work?

Unfortunately I don't have an external SCSI hard drive.

That will take you an immeasurably long time. Instead of looking for 7.6 floppies, I would look for a SCSI CD-ROM drive and the PowerBook SCSI adapter that you need to run one, since that would more likely come in handy at a later time.

Usually between 50 and 80 MB. But since you're installing onto a PowerMac 9600, and want to use it on a PowerBook 520, you'd have to do the universal install option, which would probably be close to 100mb.

Well I could then strip down the universal install manually before I compress it...

you could use apple talk and program linking turned on then use the 5300 as a server run the cd on the 5300 and install it in the pb through a serial cable. that is if the pb has a serial connection. we discussed this in another post in the pb section i think michael

if you have any macs that can use usb( with 8.6 and up or osx running classic), get an external 2.5inch usb drive enclosure. Pull the 2.5 inch hdd from the powerbook and put it into the enclosure. Plug it into the usb port and watch it pop up on the desktop. Put in the system install disk and run the installer. It will ask you where you want to install it, select the usb drive. Run the utilities to format it and set up the drive. Install the os. When done, eject the disk. Eject the drive. Pull it out and put it in to the lap top. And you're good to go. This also works with any external drive, usb, scsi, firewire. Also with osx you can make a disc image that can be used to quickly reformat a drive.

I'm not entirely sure that the Mac OS 7.6.x installer will allow you to install from unsupported hardware.

The laptop HDD is SCSI, and I don't have a SCSI -> USB adapter nor a USB capable Mac which would even allow me to run the System 7.6 installer. My first idea was to try and run the System 7.6 installer on this computer (G5 Quad) under Classic and go from there with my floppy method but as soon as I open the 7.6 installer it says it cannot be run on this Mac. The serial cable link with program sharing sounds like a much better idea, however, it would probably be quite slow but definitely much less of a pain in the ass than segmenting it and using floppies to transfer it 1.4mb at a time. I am going to try the serial method with my PM 9500. Thanks for all the input!

Well I pulled my 9500 out of the closet and I think it's shot...it doesn't seem to recognize it's HD or CD-ROM no matter what I try...but I also found my old Performa 640CD/DOS and I'm using it to do the update via program linking, working slowly but surely. Thanks!

So do i understand it is working? This is a task that can run overnite. Sometimes the slower method get the task accomplished faster.

Yeah I set it up before I went to sleep, was done this morning. Works fine. Had to go through with extensions manager and strip down my system though, I managed to cut the amount of RAM my System was taking up from ~5.9mb to ~3.1mb!
