Quote from: snes1423: somehow RPMs for YDL Linux are not avaible anywhere especially for PPCFound a few available on "OS Archive" which appears to have versions 5.0 to 6.2 @lauland: I also have not been able to track down a full copy of YDL 2.3 - I found disc 1, which is up at the Mac Garden too, but not discs 2 & 3 I have found what appears to be a full install set of YDL 3.0, I don't know if you've seen the same, but this could be of interest to some. I say 'appears to be' as it's on a WA page for installing YDL onto Amiga OS4 hardware. Of the downloads on that page, YDL3 Disk 1 iso, YDL3 Disk 2 iso, & YDL3 Disk 3 iso are of the standard Mac full install set, the remaining DL's are for the Amiga (I think). That is, YDL3 Disk 1 iso contains Mac files for BootX and Yaboot boot loaders. Plus text documentation is in Macintosh BBEdit format. I downloaded those 3 iso's via the Location 1 links on that WA page. Note that the earliest copy of this page is from 2020 and the links to the DL's 404, but on the 404 page there's a WA time bar representing the number of hits for the DL. Click the earliest bar (2012) and the ISO will become available. Moving along from there, the WA has managed to hold on to some of the earlier YDL versions: There appears to be complete install sets of YDL 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0.1 here, with partial install sets of others. 5.0.1 is a single DVD image. |

Thanks for pointing all those out! I'll see if I can find the disk I'm missing... FYI, the later versions of YDL also ran on Playstation 3's...at least ones that were able to boot "OtherOS" and not crippled. It is basically a powerpc version of RedHat, from back when that was important. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, because things like video and sound support (forget wifi) was hit and miss depending on the version and your hardware. I used it because, at the time, it was one of the best (only, or at least only well distributed) powerpc linux's that had a relatively good support out of the box.

I've used NetBSD, Debian, A/UX, MachTen, Yellow Dog Linux and MkLinux on the Mac and I have a soft spot for MkLinux. Might be since it started out as a Apple backed project, but it just has a "cozy" feel about it. Apple sure didn't know what to focus on in the mid 90's, for better or for worse ![]() The original website is still around, so check it out, download and install it if you have the guts . No 68k support though, but it runs on most System 7 era PowerPC Macs.

This gets very confusing. Apple is trying to port Linux, using the OSF variant of the Mach Kernel. I was under the impression that Linux is the kernel. So if you use the Mach Kernel, you cannot be porting Linux. Of course that was a time when Apple was confused about everything.

"... I have a soft spot for MkLinux" I have a soft spot for "LinuxPPC 2000 Q4" (Dec 2000). This was the first Linux I installed on a Mac that simply worked without me needing to stand on my head and press the on button with my big toe ![]() This was for my beige G3. I had previously installed Yellow Dog on it - can't recall the version, and I couldn't get the display to behave itself. Installed Q4 and all anomalies vanished. It was like the lifting of a fog. It ran beautifully on the beige. Pity Q4 was the last build of this PPC distro, but I think the writing was on the wall with Mac OS X waiting in the wings.

Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, MTT. I totally forgot that one! Brings back warm and fuzzy memories trying out every OS I could get my hands on, on my beloved Macs
