Mail Drop might be your best bet on System 6.0.8

I am able to connect to all my e-mail providers with a mix of Eudora Pro, Baton Mail and stunnel. I even wrote a short guide for that and posted it somewhere here (or on the Garden?), but don't ask me where it went. :O

Your options on the LC are limited, but it's not hopeless :-) Maildrop for IMAP has been mentioned already. If you use POP3, you could try PopMail II. Another alternative is the 68k version of Musashi. It's the most advanced of the three, but it states a 68020 as the absolute low-end requirement - it'll probably be slow. There might be older versions of Eudora (1.3.1 in particular) that might work well with your LC, but I haven't tested them on a 68020 yet. The general problem you're facing is the authentification / SSL issue. You need some other computer in between to handle the issue and pass the results on to your LC.

That's were stunnel comes in. I wish I could find that post I wrote about it, but once configured it works like a charm for all standard mail providers.

Be my guest. Consider the text "donated".

Thanks for the kind offer! It's good advice - though Eudora 4 isn't recommendable for System 7 I think. It's rather big, slow and it requires Apperance Manager. It might be worthwhile to see if this works with older Eudora versions though. I may do this as I'm currently testing my way through System 7 e-mail clients on my IIci. Found some really exotic ones, which are not even on the Garden yet.

I chose Eudora because its the only vintage/68k app that supports both POP3 and SMTP and still works (/w some help) with modern day providers. The few alternatives all force me to chose either one or the other, but I wanted mixed mode for a reason. Ah and yes, it has a *really* cool looking object oriented GUI.

Quote from: 68040 ... still works (/w some help) with modern day providers. You mean when using in combo with something like Stunnel or Crypto Ancienne, right? Just to clarify? I think most older e-mail clients should bring to the table what it needs, they used to work fine. From my perspective, the problems start when being forced to use an e-mail bridge / proxy. Through testing a lot of different e-mail (POP) clients on System 7, there are repeated issues I ran into. A common one is that most clients don't allow dual @-signs in their POP address. Since in the case of a proxy you'll be sending your username as part of the adress for passing through (i.e. myname@name.com@emailproxy.com ), this renders the clients non-working. Some e-mailers received patches to remedy that fact, for example Claris E-Mailer, but then those either are architecture specific (PowerPC only) or only work with very specific versions of the software. Other issues include artifical limitations on the allowed characters in the input field for POP adresses and/or user names. Or they have hard-coded port info. (e.g. POP has to be on :110) This is stuff that would be easy to fix if one had access to the source code. Unfortunately, most sources seem lost. It's a pity we never got a sources archive for Mac OS, Like I said, I've been testing a lot of e-mail software for System 7 and those are some issues I keep running into. Actually, I've been wondering if I should compile a list and put that on System 7 Today. But then I wonder if somebody else is actually interested in e-mail on real 68k System 7 Macintoshes :-)

I mean with stunnel and the tricks I mentioned in my instructions, I can access Google, Yahoo, Outlook and even my web hoster's e-mail, for both send and receiving mail. I used Eudora to clean up the tens of thousands of mails that had accumulated in my many IMAP accounts. A task impossible to complete with my Android app. Eudora can do POP3 and IMAP side by side, a feat none other can accomplish in 2023.
