Since we do have a thread for iCab I thought we should probably open one up for AOLpress 2.x.

It's that little known web browser that our very own web detective, Cashed, unearthed some days ago. I'll probably move some of our previous discussion for the sake of a better overview to this thread.

Downloading it right now to my 8600 and will report with my impressions. Everybody feel free to explore with us. :-)

First impression: It's really a speedy on my 8600, I'm surprised. Does appear to render HTML3.2 pages very nicely (like cornica.org, system7today.com, 68k.news and others). Includes that "build-your-own-website-wsywig-style" toolbelt... a bit distracting with all those icons in the top bar. Also this is pre browser conventions stuff.. the "back" button is actually located in the top-right! And I thought there wasn't even a back button :-D

Just tried it now, and after a couple rough restarts, I got it to surf to the S7T site by just opening its read-me file. I'm guessing I may have something in my system that it didn't like or it was just settling in :)

Either way, it's nice to know a web auth tool I played briefly with is available and working for 68k Macs. I hadn't thought much about it but it seems to handle all of out sites pretty well. Of course I do miss iCabs extras like tabbed browsing, but for the swiss army knife feature it offers, it's a very nice software addition from AOL! 8)

It didn't like frogfind though :(

Icons can be trimmed down from: Tools => Preferences => Configure Toolbar...

It actually works on Mac OS 9.2.2 too, though being a System 7 browser only.
It does crash on Mac OS 8 and later, as mentioned in the documentation.
Macintoshgarden.org loads, but it crashes on macintosh.garden on OS9.
I won't display wiby.org either, like v1.2.2, Cloudflare blocks it.
See the section: Possible conflicts for troubleshooting.

"Nobody likes crippled systems like frogfind anyway!"

(I'm joking, really. I like it, can be very useful at times!)

What you get in trade for compatibility with websites is a very speedy browser with Web authoring capabilities. On System 7, it feels less than a shootout between iCab vs. AOLpress, but more like Netscape 2.0.2 vs. AOLpress.

I need to use AOLpress a bit more to find out about its shortcomings and advantages. Everybody please feel free to add your impressions / observations etc.

I can't login to the forums using it. Would be nice to get that part to work.
