When Dan Palka originally founded System 7 Today and tested browsers, he found Netscape 4.8 for PowerPC & Mac OS 7.6.1 to work best at the time. In the early 2000's, Netscape 4.8 was actually still somewhat compatible with the latest web tech and managed to render websites halfway decent.

One and a half decades passed. After Knezzen and me revived S7T in 2020 with the blessing of Dan, we extended our focus from Mac OS 7.6 to all versions of System 7. And we decided to take a fresh look on browsers available for System 7. We went to great length to test all those browsers on both 68k and PowerPC Macs.

Turns out, Netscape 4.8 isn't the best solution anymore. And there was a   surprise winner! We've since poured everything in a big update of our S7T Browser Central including updated tips for performance enhancement and an overview over all the browsers available for System 7.

We hope you like our findings, we hope it will inspire you to explore the "other web" yourself and of course we'd be happy to hear feedback from you!

I'm surprised at the first place spot for sure, but it shows just how amazing these browsers were back then! I'm completely on-board with the second browser listed. In fact, it's the one I use all the time and recommend for all 68k and System 7 Mac OS users even if it suffers from speed issues compared to the first browser. Will have to check the first one out personally though! Thanks for the awesome write-up! :D

An excellent, much-needed update to this area!  Bravo gents!

I applaud your choices - I think you are spot-on throughout the list.

Well done!

Thank you for this! I'll need to grab these for my PowerBook once I actually can get it online again.

I might even use these browsers on 8.1 when the rare occasion that I need 8.1 for something comes about ;)

Hey guys!

Thanks to cballero's comment on the Garden regarding Tripod, I just happened to find this list.
BrowserWatch
Click the Browser Blvd! - The BrowserWatch Browser Listing.
Then - Just Macintosh
I don't see GNUscape, Grail, InterGo, etc, etc on the Garden

―Thanks again cballero :D

Thanks for the link, that's interesting! Quite some exotic choices listed there. In fact, never heard of stuff like e.g. Tiber.

Time to track them down :-)

Wow! Awesome tracking, Cashed!! 8)

You are now crowned our 'official' Mac App Hunter! great job, Cashed!! :D

I never would have found that little nook on the web myself, I was busy tracking down banned Kal schemes for my Classic 68k and PPC Macs back then! lol ;)

And our combined effort, well, that's what it's all about, right? :)

Sure had some difficulties with that Italian Tiber/Vol Browser -so put out a warrant to @Plus950.

Was about to hit the sack when I found this other Browser Archive
The site works best from Y2K. The good thing is that it also lists the Video On Line Browser, but it's the windows version only. From 2005 the site shows mirror sites for downloads -that I need to check up on.
Here's the HotJava Browser from Sun Microsystems -click mac - .bin file - so see the mirror sites

Oh yes please!! And much appreciated, Cashed! 8)

I am a bit of a themes hoarder (but, hey! who isn't? lol ;)) plus, it's a dead simple way to re-skin OS 8 to our beloved, classic System 7 :)

Oh my what? :o Wow, Chased!!! You're really 'cashing-in' on the bounty for all the known web browsers on the planet, ain't 'ya? Let's give a 'hip, hip, hooray' for our web bounty hunter!!! :D

Good work cached….
Os8 is bloatware, who’d want that lol

I have a few original cd-roms 7.1, 7.5.5, 8, 8.1, 8.6, 9, 9.1 & 10.4

My 6200 has 8.6 on it and it’s horrendously slow where it was almost quick on 7.5.5. I’ll be selling that next but I’ll put 7.5.5 back on it before i do.

lmao! -Thanks guys :D

Back on track with the browsers.
Found Grail
I'm unsure about v3.0, but v5.0 and v6.0 works on the Macintosh-
See the Readme.txt
You'll need to have both Python & Tcl/Tk installed.

Due to being at work I won't test DL, I know the grail-06.tgz DL-link works though -unsure about the others. I have the two other requirements downloaded at home -will test it myself in roughly 15 hours and add it to the Garden.

Update: Found NaviPress -it's actually AOLpress
The web page navisoft.com dissolved into aol.com
Here's the Beta Versions

We actually have AOLpress 1.2.2 on the Garden -it was a HTML creation tool before it became a browser. -still need to locate the BinHex

Good morning Neal! :D

Yup a new one -well a forgotten one at least -now excavated again.
I didn't have time to test it properly yesterday. From the Grail manual, you supposedly only need to run the Grail.py (when you have Python 1.5.x installed, as "Grail is executed directly from its source directory." More testing today.

Additionally I found and uploaded the following browsers to the Garden:
Grail
AOLpress 2.0
GNNpress
-There are still a few things to sort out

I hope you are feeling a bit better this morning and your tooth doesn't hurt as much -last day then you have tomorrow and the weekend off! :)

Wanted to leave something for you to read during, drinking your cup of morning coffee ;)

@cballero -so are your kind words -thanks ;)
