Feedback & Ideas / Cloudflair strikes again
November 04, 2025, 02:16 |
As someone who really prefers to use old browsers that cannot do https, imagine my surprise when visiting ST7 this morning I was confronted with cloudflair trying to phone home, using an https link. As that browser wasn't capable of connecting to anything https, I declined. Then, after logging in, there was no problem it seemed, except I was unable to do anything except browse as though I wasn't logged in. The page stated "welcome, guest" as opposed to my usual logged in name. I guess you guys are desperately trying to nut out the flooding that's occuring, and are having to resort to cloudflair intervention. Umm it needs a little tweaking though, it seems. Good luck guys. p.s I had to resort to using an https capable browser to post this ![]() [Edit] I'm now using iCab 2.9.9 in System 7x. - The external cloadflair link (I presume was automatically and quietly sent). With Camino I have Little Snitch which notices these things. If I'd clicked OK to that input, I probably would have been OK, as I'm able to log in OK here with iCab and edit this post. |

Hardware / Re: Mac SE/30 full color upgrade board !
October 31, 2025, 23:39 |
" a kind of Color Classic II, essentially" With the LCD upgrade, the SE/30 actually surpasses the Color Classic II in some important areas (but not all). 640x480 as opposed to the CC2's 512x384 color display, means the SE/30 can now play all of those early RGB games that demanded a 640x480 display. The ZigZagJoe site mentions that it supports thousands of colors up to 800x600 as well, but I see full color 640x480, as being a huge advancement over the SE/30's original mono 512x384 display ratio. Officially, the SE/30 supported 32MB RAM, it's well known that this Mac will support up to 128MB RAM. The CC2 supports up to 36MB. Tho' the CC2's RAM will be faster. On board FPU in the SE/30, Optional in the CC2. The 30Video HD board has VGA out, allowing for video mirroring. The SE/30 shipped with the infamous "dirty" ROM, requiring use of a 3rd party CP to enable 32bit addressing. The CC2 doesn't have that issue. The CC2 has a faster 33MHz CPU 2x the 16MHz speed of the SE/30 CPU. It would be interesting to bench-mark the CC2 against an upgraded SE/30. The CC2 would have to outperform here, at a guess. Still, the 640x480 display would be the clincher if I was to choose between the two. Yes, it is amazing that in 2025, there's a current upgrade path available for the SE/30 Mac. I don't have an SE/30. Like @wove I once owned one (without an Xceed card). But unlike wove, I never got to trade mine in for what seems to me, the deal of the century. Good one wove, that was amazing to read. I wish it had been me. |

Hardware / Mac SE/30 full color upgrade board !
October 30, 2025, 12:24 |
Got a Mac SE/30 and would like an impossible to find grayscale Xceed card? Forget it! There's a new board in town and it's called 30Video. If you want to keep the SE/30's existing CRT there's the 30Video GS, which offers a grayscale display plus color out to an attached RGB monitor. But, if your existing CRT is on the blink, then you might consider the 30Video HD, for a full color LCD replacement with a 640x480 resolution display. These upgrade boards for the SE/30 (and IIsi) are being produced in the US by a person trading as "ZigZagJoe's Vintage". Odd name but hey, you have to check this out it is awesome. Quote from: ZigZagJoe: "30Video is a series of video cards for Macintosh SE/30 & IIsi that I developed and released in July 2024. These cards are not a clone or reverse engineered board, they are a 100% new scratch hardware design I developed and wrote a ROM driver for." On the above linked page, under "SE/30 LCD Kits: Ditch the CRT!" check the "Demo!" link for a short (1min) mind blowing demo. Then if interested watch the "Video Review by JDW" linked below the demo link (almost 1 hour). What impressed me was by replacing the CRT with a color LCD, the amount of room freed up in removing the CRT. The SE/30 suddenly became a compact Mac easy to get inside of, to work in and replace components etc. |

Off Topic Discussion / Vintage Computer Festival Midwest 2025
October 21, 2025, 04:28 |
Vintage Computer Festival Midwest 2025 - anyone here attend? I'm not in the US, but wish I could have been there. Saw this short (under 12 mins) YouTube vid from a Jeff Geerling, who attended. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF0NKvmQmVA <- modern browser rqd. Entitled: "Retro tech is thriving (and necessary) at VCF Midwest" He has an unexpected encounter (hint "Soft Dorothy Software") ![]() Some amazing retro gear on show. Vid was over way too fast for me. |

3000+ yesterday. This does seem somewhat extreme. |

Only 300 "guests" at the time of this posting. I can recall back (4 or 5 weeks or so) when there was on average 4 -10 (if lucky) guests per day. ![]() Hey! Some of you guests! Log in and say hello. We won't bite. Honest

Operating System / Re: How to move files?
October 19, 2025, 13:11 |
I don't think this is possible in classic Mac OSs. Could be wrong. Often am, but it's not one that I know of. In classic Mac OS, dragging an icon into another folder within the same volume, is the only way to move items from one location to another that I know of. But dragging icons from one volume into another volume will only copy over the item(s). Option drag is only used for copying from one folder into another, within the same volume (perhaps is what wove was recalling). You could probably create an AppleScript app to automate this, but likely dragging over to copy, then deleting the original manually after the copy completes, may be a simpler task. One up for Windblows here perhaps?

HyperCard Heaven: Here's the earliest copy I could find (WA) From there I found HyperQuit - I don't need it, but somebody could find it useful ![]() Here's the final HC Heaven page before Jim Stephenson stopped updating his site. The links page from there go to interesting HC related pages via the WA. Like Anthony DeRobertis's "HyperCard Complete page: Script Thief anyone? Development / Re: Knezzen programs a new Hotline client
October 17, 2025, 04:31 |
Ah I was too dim to spot the connection ![]() Perhaps to connect the two statements, the compatibility section could have: If compiling from the source SDK, GamePlugs need to be compiled as FAT... etc, etc. Or similar wording to help clarify. |

@68040: Likely a typo. Probably should read: the GamePlugs needed to be 1st compiled as FAT and... etc etc.; They are compiled and ready for use in the DL. @Knezzen: I think the MG is an adequate place to hold the downloads. Make a sticky post pointing to it. And send takedown notices to the scraper site (you know who )@wove: Snap! That was my Mac too. I saw my first web pages on that SE (MacWeb) and my first Usenet posts with the first gen NewsWatcher

Quote from: Knezzen: "Maybe a "upgrade only" package with just the binary in a .hqx archive? "You could turn compression off in StuffIt's preferences instead, and upload the complete FAT package as an uncompressed ".sit". These takes seconds to extract on the slowest of Macs. Caveat is a larger archive size, up to 23MB uncompressed for the current DL, but these days file sizes aren't too big a deal, esp for files only 20MB or so. Just a thought... Heh, 20MB, the size of my 1st Mac's internal HD ![]() |

Operating System / Re: Is it possible to completely disable Platinum on OS 8.0-8.1?
October 11, 2025, 07:34 |
Quote from: Knezzen: "A different approach which works as well is to replace the 7.6.1 "System" file with the one from Mac OS 8.1 on a regular Mac OS 7.6.1 install. You gain a lot of compatibility with Mac OS 8 but still get the look and feel and everything else from 7.6.1. Tested and working on my 8600"@knezzen: I'm now convinced that this is THE best approach to take. Especially WRT Basilisk II installs. Of the two methods I've tried, The Mac OS 8.1 install with 7.6.1 Finder appeared to work fine for me, until I started using AppleScript and I found that AppleScript was mostly broken and 3rd party AppleScript applications just failed outright. The Mac 7.6.1 install with an 8.1 System file. AppleScript is 100% OK, but (so far) HFS+ drives aren't mounting. Disk Tools can see and check them, but they don't mount on the desktop. These are the two most recognizable anomalies I'm striking. But when it comes to weighing up what I can do without here, the lack of HFS+ I can live with. But broken AppleScript, no. That's the deal breaker. So, thanks for that tip Knezzen. It works the best for me. |

Software / Re: Keeping track of my stock portfolio on System 7

Quote from: cballero: "Swedish, huh? We might have to get cracking and learn some Swedish, lol!"I should've looked closer to home ![]() FMPro 4 Developer Edition (Eng) has been at the MG for years (I'd forgotten it was there). I've added the Svensk copy to that MG page as well. I think however, the 3.0 version of the SDK is the one to use, if you want the networkable solution with the Runtimes. |

Yeah I think that if you have the 3.0 SDK, then combined with a FMPro 3 install, you have the dev kit. The version 3 SDK has been available from the MG for some time. @cballero; the v3 SDK does include network ability. Now, I've never had much to do with this SDK, but the included ReadMe had a chapter beginning: "3. Network Considerations With Filemaker Pro Runtime", so I guess that networkability is in there somewhere. I did find a FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developers Edition, located in a "Holy Grail" CD issue #30 on the Web Archive... before you get too excited @CB, it appears to be a Swedish* copy. Inside the image it has a full installer for FMP 4.0, the version 4 Runtime SDK, HomePage 3, plus some other files. * "Denna CD-ROM-skiva innehÄller följande:" Swedish? |
