the os 7.6.1 documents state that the control strip is for the power pc / pci machines.  yet under 8.1 I get the control strip.  Is their a way to hack it onto the 7100.

You must have misread that documentation.  I have a control strip on every machine.  You likely didn't install control strip, or deleted it.

You should be able to insert your 7.6.1 CD and install just the control strip.

Thanks Dan

but on page 32 of the install manual states"if you have a portable or a powerpc computer that uses a pci expansion bus you will notice the control strip...."

that might be a misprint...

As I said, I have Control Strip on everything.  My PowerBook Duo 2300c, and my 8100, and my 8500, and my Quadra 900.  I can check into why it says that, though.

There are other examples of misprints in Apple documentation.  Like in the Read Me for AppleShare Client 3.8.3, it flips back and forth between "requiring" Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 7.6.  It actually requires 7.6.

This is off the top of my head, but isn't there a control panel that turns the control strip on or off?

Yes.  It's called the Control Strip control panel.

Wow that's just the information I need for my article.  Is there one that documents the changes of 7.6.1?

The article wove posted is much more technical about the OS itself, rather than just what new features it came with (most of which can be installed onto 7.5.5).  This is what is most important.

Open Transport PPP and Desktop Printing had been around for a while, btw.

This is the Technote for 7.6.1. If you scroll to the bottom of either of these documents you will find pdf versions that can be downloaded.

i went back to attempt to install from my cd and i could not find it.  It appears that the control panel is also not in my 8.1 system folder.  it is in the control panel folder in 9.2  i am going to copy it to my 7.6 machine and hope for the best.  any ideas on how to install this control panel if version 2.3 from os 9 does not work?

Yes, the control strip should be on the 7.6 install CD. Try custom install, then go through the options until you find the control strip. It might be part of mobility or since it is controlled via a Control Panel it might be located in the Control Panel section.

thanks Dan and Wove.

I have a 7.6.1 install cd which did not give me access to what i needed due to the installer going to 7.6.1 update.  I found the installer folder and tried the 7.6 installer which i  found and installed the control strip.  I still do not understand why this did not happen the first time, in that i did a clean install.  thanks for the help

i hound an article that stated the control strip was intended for the powerbooks.  and that it was only installed onto powerbooks with the easy installer.  you will need to do a custom  install.  anyone else have a similar issue?
