When I browse to these forums with Netscape Navigator 4.04 on System 7, I get:

"JavaScript Error: http://system7today.com/forums/, line 13:
syntax error.

ctTimeMs = new Date().getTime(),
.....................^ (edit: the carrot is supposed to point to the period before getTime(),.

.getTime(), is in red.

And then when I try to log in, I get:

A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data.
(Network Error: Socket is not connected)
Try connecting again.

The first error is displayed by Netscape, and the second one is displayed by the OS. I tried to upload a screenshot to revontulet.org, but it said it was an unsupported file.

What do you guys do in order to browse this forum in System 7?

That's odd :( it sounds like some weird sort of login issue with that browser? Maybe you could try surfing over to http://icab.de/ and downloading their System 7 web browser (it does ask for System 7.6.1 for the PPC version and System 7.1 for the 68k one)

If needed, you could download it directly for PPC Macs here:
http://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/Mac/iCab/iCab_Pre2.99a_English_PPC.sit

And for 68k Macs from here:
http://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/Mac/iCab/iCab_Pre2.99b_English_68k.sit

Good luck! :)

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home. I'll have to update the system in order to use it, though. Hopefully MG has it.

Oops :o I almost forgot! System7Today has a phenomenal Browser Central with great reviews, suggestions and links that both Knezzen and Bolkonskij I believe worked really hard on so it's a 'must-read' to get some deep System 7 web browser insight:

http://system7today.com/otherbrowsers

The MG only carries previous versions of iCab since the latest ones are still on their download page here: http://icab.de/download.html

And even if you have a PowerMac, remember that 68k versions usually run perfectly and in this case it's made for an earlier Mac OS. Also, program authors tend to suggest more stable OS versions for their programs, but I've found that at times programs still run just fine on a lower OS version, so it's worth giving them a shot before updating your OS unless you have several System Folders on your volume(s) to 'bless' the one you want to boot from.

Finally, I totally missed a great episode with Lichen Software sharing a good while back on his PB1400 exploits with every Classic Mac OS under the sun and both Dan and Wove added to that lively discussion; a great read overall and he did an outstanding review of various web browsers on each OS! 8) I was a member back then but was clearly MIA that season:

Awesome, thanks! I did some research, and found out that Mac OS 7.6 got rid of the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen, so I didn't upgrade, since I love that screen. Right now I'm using the 68K version of iCab, but I'll try th PPC version. So far, no errors have occurred, and the site is working great! Just a little slow, but that kind of adds to the nostalgia, since it feels like I'm using my Mac on dial-up haha, which is actually a good thing, since it feels more authentic haha :)

Thanks for those resources. I'll definitely check them out :)

@ShinobiKenobi - have a look at the Browser Central that cballero linked to. We put our know-how on browsing and System 7 into that. One of the tips is to disable JavaScript in your older browser. It's of no use and it'll only throw errors like the one you posted (or worse, it might even freeze your browser)

You'll find browser getting faster after disabling it. Also check the other performance tips.

iCab is the best browser for System 7 in terms of features. But it's not the fastest. Again, check the Browser Central and test some of the other browsers to see which runs best for you. To us, there is no perfect solution but it all depends on what you need.

Ah, the Classic Mac Welcome Screen! 8) I feel you there! Having said this, nothing stops the intrepid Mac user from simply adding it right back in, and I can think of two methods to achieve this:

The first is to simply copy the resource image from any older System File (I checked on my Mac OS 9, it's there :)) using ResEdit (I'd use a boot image or floppy rather than one of my boot System Files for safety) and save it as a Startup Screen image file. My memory's a little rusty here, but after the image is saved as a startup image, I think you only need to just label the image 'StartupScreen', place it inside your System Folder, and your System does the rest for you. Upon you Mac's boot-up, you will see the Mac's startup screen you've come to know and love (come to think of it, I may tinker with this very same thing on my Mac OS 9 Mac! :P lol)

The second way is a more permanent option, and that's to hack a copy (and notice I'm saying a copy of) of your 7.6.x System File and manually replace the startup image resource from an earlier System File (I usually change the resource number before pasting a new resource in; this way, the file I'm modifying doesn't lose its original resource)

I know it's extra work, but part of owning your Mac is GUI customization, and in that spirit, either of these options can customize your OS to your liking, no apologies needed! :D And note that these options work right up through the last Mac OS 9 version!

I'm just surprised no one has made and uploaded a MOSS kit or even a simple StartupScreen of this yet! :o

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate your advice. One thing I don't like about iCab is that it doesn't let you save links as. Some downloads from the Mac garden got corrupted because of it, so I had to use Netscape. I also don't like the "Hotlinks" or whatever it calls bookmarks. That's not a big deal, though. But I really can't live without the tabs. I don't know how I ever browsed without them! hahaha :D

I'll definitely check out those resources :)

It is amusing to me how first uses can set patterns that stick with you. Most early browsers opened every link in a new window. My big complaint with new browsers is tabs. I really do like every page to have its own window. :)

In BeOS you can have applications be tabs, work with only one window on the screen. And I think that is the bee's knees. First encounters just create lasting impressions :)

I know! It's all about that remembered Mac OS experience, Wove 8)

Speaking of which, I dug-up some neat, original Mac OS Startup Screens from a MacRumor's post and uploaded them to the MG ;)

Let me know if the archival format I chose works: I made the folder a self-mounting image and encoded it as a MacBinary for upload so no StuffIt compression needed :) here's the link:

I can't login with Netscape 4.08 either.
Similar error message except
Network Error: Broken pipe

Same problem with macos9lives.

So have to use iCab on the P475.

Yes, a known issue with Netscape in general on slower machines, not just with this site. Google the error and you'll see a lot of reports on this over the years. I have tried my best to solve this on the server side, but to no avail :(

Best thing to do is to use iCab, like you mentioned, ovalking.

One thing I've discovered about iCab is that it doesn't let you save link as. So it corrupts some files when you download them. So if I want to dl something, I just use Classilla. Because of that, I just use Classilla as my main browser on Mac OS 8.5 - Mac OS 9.2.2.

Yes, Classilla is AWESOME, but it doesn't run on anything pre 8.5.
