Didn't want to post this on the Garden, but I've so feature loaded my system that I got to restrain myself not to keep bragging about it 24/7. ![]() I couldn't imagine what's all possible with MacOS 8.1, extensions, control stripes and and and. You just needed a fast(er) CPU and the world was yours! I can rip an entire story book apart, store the clippings in a folder and then reassemble them at will. All just via "drag'n drop". I couldn't do that with a modern day Linux system and any such customizing on Windoze wouldn't survive the next mandatory install of patches & updates. We lost a lot(!) of creative potential with the "appliance drive" in OS development. |

It is perfectly fine to brag a bit. There are many times when a person is on a roll and projects are coming together, where it would be damn nice to just share the work flow. Society has gotten so insular that we just peck away lost in our own little spaces. One wants to share their efforts and admire the efforts of others. We would all be better of if sharing our endeavors were a more common practice.

Well done! It's kind of the essence of this community to showcase how much can still be achieved with a seemingly outdated OS like System 7. I salute you for getting the max out of your system and working with it! Let us carry on the torch :-)

@68040 I say BRAVO! I joined this forum for exactly these types of posts! Information on System 7 Macs as well as all Macs. To show what we can still do with our Mac vintage HW & SW. 😄 I will just iterate that S7T is very refreshing as some other vintage computer platforms, one in particular, is so toxic that they have completely destroyed their usefulness. A huge thank you who to all have created S7T! 😎

Thx to you all! I still can't wrap my head around the fact that I click on a folder in MacOS 8.1 and my file open dialog will jump to that location. Or I can set a default file location for any specific app. Yeah, I use extensions for all that magic, but they work and didn't require me to hack some mythical registry to keep them working. You might expect that these add-ons are by now standard features of any modern day OS. But you'd be mistaken for thinking that. I could go on, but I am sure you all get my drift. Its just fun for me to work with my MacOS. But anytime I have to log on to a Windoze machine, I get depressions from that "experience".

The point being - and I try to convey that to people - that Mac OS delivers on its promise of being a "Personal Computer". 68040 has fine-tuned a lovely setup to meet his needs. I have done so with my setup and undoubtedly, so do all of you if you embarked on this journey. 68040 is spot on when he says you can't do this with the latest Windows version. You can't! Neither with the OSX disguising as MacOS. Because it won't let you bend the OS to fit your needs with some mouse click here and some settings there. But it's difficult to transport that unless you have experienced it yourself. But that factor is a big part of the fascination of System 7 (or Mac OS in general) and I'm pretty sure most of you feel the same.

Yeah, customizing to my needs[. You care to know in how many place you got to define Fonts sizes in Linux, so they'll finally stick? Ah yeah, and in Windoze you "only" got to hack the registry for that. Or you're in Windoze 10+ lord-knows-what. Now they got this crazy mix of FIORI tiles and old fashioned window apps with drop down menus. Take a guess where you are supposed to change what setting. I get paid as systems admin to configure Windowze servers, and I have to play guessing games there all the time. ![]() These days I catch myself more often than not simply surrendering to the way they want me to compute. For even if I figure out how to outsmart them, the next system upgrade will blow all my tricks to smithereens. Take for example Android's outright hostility to anything stored on the SD card. The chocolate factory claims its for my own security, that they block access to the storage card more rigidly with every new OS version. Yet they won't restrict the data mining craze of the each and every Android app that gets installed onto my tablet. They are all after my contact's list, even if ts only a graphic's app or word processor. And truly all of them send statistics data about my app use and the program's behavior back to ... somebody's server. Of course its totally anonymized - or so they promise us - and its all for my own good. Jeezus H. Chist - what did we get ourselves into with this data craze? In the beginning I tried XFrameWork and other tricks to bypass that and customize the message flow on my system. But as I said, Google took great care to make all of those solutions unworkable in their newer Android versions. Now I've given up and migrated all my personal data into my virtual Shangri La. I only use my Linux (or Lord forbid Windoze) setup for personal data when I absolutely have to. Why does it feel like I'm only the slave drive, hooked up to somebody else's ATA Bus, everytime I get onto a "modern" computer these days?

You're right, modern OSes tend to enslave us to their will at every turn ![]() And spot on on the Linux bit: just the other day I was wondering, 'How in the world do you setup fonts in Linux?' And the answer to that; well, I still haven't the faintest idea!! ![]() Thank goodness for Classic Mac OS!!

For historical reasons Linux has a three+ tiered font system. In the beginning you had the old X11, then came GNOME and finally KDE and all those fancier graphical user interfaces. The problem lies in the way the Linux community is structured. Whilst X11 was developed by the original Un*x gang, GNOME and later on KDE a.s.o. were all coded by separate teams - often not on friendly terms with each other and sometimes outright hostile. So yeah, they had no issue making changes to font paths and environment settings that screwed up their competitor's layout. Problem is, its all supposed to run on one and the same box and given that this is a not-for-pay "market", you get no customer support either. Put Java on top of that and you have a Byzantine labyrinth of places where you potentially have to make changes. And since e.g. Java fonts can not be scaled in fractions (e.g. no 2.5 times enlargements) and some of the modern font settings won't work with older programs and display driver settings vary even between console and VNC, Linux to this day hasn't managed to get WYSIWYG straight. Its ridiculous that e.g. Word 6 for MacOS produces more reliable results than LibreOffice for Linux 64bit.
