Just thought I should share this with you, there's a Macintosh-centric BBS around - the Captain's Quarters II. It's an old-style BBS in the best sense and features everything you'd want from one - a forums, email, games, downloads, ... There's more info on how to join: (should work with ANY System 7 Mac) http://cqbbs.ddns.net/ (works with Netscape 4) S7T member galgot and me are already on there, maybe some others of you would like to join us? I'm still looking for folks to join me in playing LORD 2 ;-) But ya'll come back here, ya hear!? ;-) |

I think this deserves a little push - The Captain's Quarter BBS just celebrated his first birthday (congrats!) and I keep logging in every once in a while. It's nice place to connect to from your System 7 Mac with friendly folks and some nice stuff like a downloads category, ASCII art, games and more. Looking forward to get my IIci online and use it to frequent the place. :-)

I might start my own BBS, once I get some time to breathe.

Save your time and get on the Captain's Quarter BBS from your 68k machine :-) ... it's pretty cool as it is, it just needs more users. There a lot of other stuff that needs attention, like a simple news page regarding 68k Macs & PowerPC much like amiga-news.de ...

My BBS will be about the world(s) I write about in my books. A vintage platform for vintage texts. ;-)

Just books from a guy who loves to retreat into the Universe between his ears more and more. My motto is, if you don't like this reality just write you a new one. ;-)

Sounds great to me! At one point you just have to show us some of your works. I for one like reading a good classic book / novel for a change :-)

I managed to get on to CQII! Have no previous experience of BBSs, so will take a bit of getting used to. If you use the Black Knight prog (which seems geared to modems) you must install the Black Night Telnet Tool into your extensions folder if you're already on the internet. No need to restart with this one. It's not necessary to enter the registration code (it is not free s/w according to the help within).. I also managed to connect using NCSA Telnet. This required minimal setup, but you don't get the colour/sound of Black Knight. You have to set up a CQII account - if you leave the username blank, it will take you through the process.o

Great decision! And yes, good tips on joining. I just sent you message on CQII, see if you can figure out how things work over there ;-) I used to use MacSSH to connect, but since switched to Black Knight as per official recommendation. (nicer default font, better file uploads etc.)

I did more things with BBS using an old Commodore. When I would connect to a BBS on the Mac, and it was always done via modem over a phone line. My software of choice for such connection was the Communication Module of ClairsWorks. Although I do recall their being some HyperCard stacks that were specifically aimed for use on a BBS. My first computer communication was via teletype connected with an acoustical coupler modem to a remote main frame and from there to another person on a similar setup. All done using baudet code (48bps 7bit ASCII 1 parity). One party sends a basic program to the mainframe which outputs to your terminal. Twenty minutes of pounding and clattering as the teletype churns out a full size Mona Lisa in full glory black and white ASCII art. It was very social though. Since was ostensibly part of a class, you where typically with others (maybe even some girl you wanted to impress), so you had a beverage, maybe some weed. You might play cards and even do someother school work. Part of the draw of the class was the room held an unmonitored phone with an outside line, so while everyone thought the teletype was talking long distance to a remote mainframe you were actually calling your girl friend long distance back home. In any event a BBS by comparison seems a rather boring way to pass an evening.

I definitely need to check this out when I get a chance! I'd love to get back into the vintage Macintosh scene, feels like I've been out of it for much too long (even if it's only been six months or so at most).

Europa hasn't checked it out, but you can do better ! ;-) CQII is alive and kicking. If you want to read a crazy story of what I went through with my neighbor and why I put my fence under current, log in and join the forums. And don't forget to send me a message via the system. :-) It's classic BBSing but for retro Macs this time. Works with every classic Mac down to the Mac Plus.

Hmm, you can't choose your neighbours, and unfortunately a bad draw can ruin people's lives in extreme cases. I seem to have broken CQ... trying out a download... went away for a bit... session seemed to have locked up on my return... no response to any keys. Now unable to reconnect - windows opens and immediately closes without displaying anything. Will try again another day.... Another day fixed it! And I finally sussed out how to do downloads. After you've flagged some files for download, with the space key, and used D to start download, then you have to pick a protocol (within CQ). When you've done this you then also have to pick the protocol from the Black Night Receive menu. Then the download begins. Perhaps downloads are not possible with other clients??
