Browser genius Cameron Kaiser picked up the text-only browser for Mac OS 68k & PPC and started to update it. See here (site is Netscape compatible)

http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/mac/lynx/

Now don't expect any wonders, this is still the old codebase and a text-only browser (plus the TLS/SSL issue remains) but he's made some promising changes. I personally like his ideas like

Quote
I think improving its handling of <div> tags, especially with respect to positioning, as well as tables and HTML entities will get us a large part of the way to parity without introducing other potential incompatibilities.

I'd consider that a smart move, as it would give some very basic layout capabilities without draining the scarce resources.

I'm really looking forward to the next beta, this could be the new standard in text-browsers for System 7 Macs. (Been using WannaBe for years so far).

Anyone tried it out yet? (I'll do when I get home tonight)

Epic! I can do something similar with SSHing into my iBook and running alex_free's port of links2. This is definitely more convenient however. :)

Nice!!!

I still don't know how to make navigation work on text browsers; it's pretty embarrassing to admit!

I wonder if he should have chosen Wannabe, I mean isn't it more modern? At least, lynx has better documentation online because of its many ports :)

IIRC basic nav is as follows:

g to bring up the go to box
q to quit
right arrow or enter to go to a link
back arrow to go back
up and down to scroll and/or jump from one link to the next

Been a while since I used Lynx, so that could be incorrect.

So you may have heard that Cameron Kaiser decided to halt the development of TenFourFox and Classilla. His achievements are phenomenal and I salute him for all his efforts. Pulling off what he did as a single developer is just "insanely great" - as a certain Steve might have put it.

That said, no word on MacLynx. Cameron mentions his efforts are returning to hobby status and that gives me some hope that maybe he'll continue to tinker with the smaller, neater codebase of MacLynx.

I personally think modernized text-based browser would be the best thing that could happen to System 7 ... let's see what time will show.

I wonder what the chances of Clasilla ending up in a place like GitHub for further evolution would be?

I know a lot of open-source development languishes there and in other places online for lack of programming talent, if only because sole developers have to dedicate time to feed, too :(

I think Classilla is on Github, the repo just hasn't been actively "managed". But you can grab the source code. The build process seems to be straight out of hell, but yeah, if there is someone with sufficient know-how to update it, I think Cameron Kaiser would be the last to say "no". Cameron, if you read this, maybe you want to add two sentences ?

Usually just everyone cries that this or that should be on Github and open sourced so development can continue but when developers upload it, there's very little to be heard by the demanders. Just my experience.

It seems like Cameron listened to everyone’s suggestions and released a “Macified” version last week. Going to give it a go later today :)

That is awesome news! Let's not forget to let the good man know via e-mail how we appreciate his work for our beloved System 7 Macs. The browser might actually become useful if he continues :-)

WannaBe and MacLynx have a few pros and cons, such as WannaBe rendering HTML H1 through H6 and an address bar, while MacLynx has Mac OS native controls and scroll bar

I had a soft-spot for the un-Macified version, but this is very intriguing.  Can't wait to give this a shot on the Quadra later.

I really see it becoming my go to browser if he keeps implementing Mac GUI elements to replace the standard Lynx stuff.

It's really nice paired with Crypto Ancienne as well. Browsing modern TLS 1.3 sites on your Macintosh SE :)

Cameron is still working to make MacLynx the go-to browser for System 7 machines. He just released a new update (beta 5). Changes involve UTF-8 and more native controls like a menu bar. Very exciting news :-)

Detailed info can be found on his blog at http://oldvcr.blogspot.com/

I wonder I ponder, how much of the Info net (the part that deals with knowledge transfer rather than nasty pic distribution) is usable with a text only browser (that lacks HTTPS?).
